Normally, I am not one to complain about any of the crap we are subject to in the name of fun, but this time… this time I feel that I need to. World vs World Season 1 has come and gone. While I can honestly say that I absolutely despise WvW and all things related, I do like loot. Especially when it’s something “new” involved. So, when the announcement was made that Seasons would result in loot based on your server’s performance, I was slightly intrigued. I ventured into the kitten hole known as WvW, and was not surprised to find that…. I still hated it. Every inch of it. Hate it. HOWEVER! I persevered. I fought, and fought (I am not saying that I am the only one, because I know I am not). Hours, and hours I spent in each of the respective borderlands, doing various monotonous task to achieve the 15 points needed for the key for a chest. The time finally arrives to receive the locked chest, to which that very key was made for. I open it.
Three random level 80 greens.
One hundred Empyreal Fragments (spell check?)
One Hundred Dragonite Ore
One Yellow Mini Dolyak (The absolute highlight of this rant.)
and last but not least:
One Yellow Headgear
One Yellow Sword.

Thanks…… I suppose.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I was not expecting precursor’s or ascended gear or anything to that extent, and I am aware that it’s entirely based on how well your server did overall in the seasons. Regardless, I can not help but to feel that I completely wasted my time for very very….. verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry little return. So, again, I say: Thanks, Anet. Thanks for renewing my faith in WvW.

Well for people that WvW for you know, the reward of, wait for it… wait for it.. FUN, it was just an added bonus. Seriously, you subjected yourself to something you admit you despise doing. Why? The point of a game is to play for fun. I don’t know about you but there isn’t a reward in this game, precursor or whatever, that would entice me to spend hours doing something I don’t enjoy.

Maybe now when Season 2 starts it wont be clogged with people setting down catapults 4 feet away from the door so they can tag gates for their achievements.

Seriously, it’s WvW. You do it for WvW. Not for the fat loot from the meta achievement at the end.

The main issue is that a big amount of people (and most likely the majority of those that are complaining) are PvE-players that only joined WvW for the rewards.

The actual WvW-players however mostly don’t care in the slightest for these rewards and just see them as a bonus, since we play for fun.

Like someone else said, fun and proper rewards do not need to be mutually exclusive !
smashing my hammer in my enemy’s face and making him eat it is a lot of fun, getting properly rewarded for doing so for 7 weeks adds wait for it more fun and a sense of accomplishment !

I for one will continue to WvW and making my enemies eat my hammer but…..
I would be crazy to become a purist WvW only player with such poor rewards !!!

I will still go to PVE for fractals / dungeons and world bosses to get my fat loot
and scratch my urge to kill people in WvW

The game, and all of it’s contents (I’d like to believe) were designed to be fun, which by extension should have included WvW. The time I spent actually aiding our server was not, in the least fun (for me). You can be the elitist and say that people do WvW just to do it, and that’s fine. My whole point was not “Q.Q don’t wvw cause the rewards suck.” My point is, We were given a Meta-achievement to complete in WvW, which I am to believe was meant to a extension of fun, and a means to gain potentially good loot from this. Seven weeks. Seven kitten weeks, during which I obtained maybe 5g, and a handful of mat’s. During that Seven weeks, I rarely did more than WvW (which as I previously stated, was not in the least bit fun). I had hoped that me aiding my server, and jumping in to help where I could would have been rewarded with fun/loot. I can’t even begin to explain how, had I not spent the time in WvW to better my server, I could have made countless more gold, and had a metric-kitten-ton more fun.

Lessened learned. Don’t beat your head into your monitor doing something that isn’t fun for you and expect to be lavished in gifts. I’ve skipped a bunch of living story events that had rewards I would have liked but it just wasn’t worth it to me to do what wasn’t fun to get them. I refuse to make my game time unpleasant in hope that I’ll get some digital reward. I also hate WvW. The reward could have been guaranteed 2000 gold I still would have passed on the event. If I’m not having fun it isn’t worth my time.

What did you people expect?
PvE people have Living Story that is good for AP’s and lame rewards. WvW season chest is the WVW equivalent of that. You get AP’s over time and get a little reward.

Personally, I have no problem with the chest. I was in WvW having fun with my server. I got AP’s and a little end of season bonus for something I was doing anyway, regardless of there being AP’s or a reward. I was going to be there even without the chest. The contents of what I got out of it were exactly what I expected them to be. I don’t know why anyone expected more.

If you hate WvW and grinded this out, then chances are you hurt your server by taking up space in the queue, not knowing what you’re doing and not even caring about the outcome. This reward was obviously not meant for you and frankly, it’s your own fault for getting involved in an activity for many hours that you hate just for some dream of being lavished with rewards for doing it. It was obviously meant for people who partake in WvW and would achieve the meta over the course of the weeks. Take it as a lesson learned.

If you don’t enjoy it, the loot will never be worth it.

Sorry to hear you did not find it fun.

WvW is one of only 3 things that can possibly keep me in this game. (The other two are movement based combat and 5-man dungeons.)

Love the community feel of WvW when the server works together. Love being a swat team that can ninja keeps and towers from underneath the enemy noses. Love the tactics and more importantly the creative strategies that can be had there, (something the last decade of MMO’s don’t allow). Nevermind it is constantly situational play.

Winning small battles and skirmishes is a reward. Having fun while doing that is just gravy.

I won’t do jump puzzles for rewards. No matter how good the rewards. I hate them. I don’t believe they belong in an MMO.

I won’t do some parts or all of some Living Stories. I skipped the entire Queens Jubilee.

There’s an old saying, “Those who marry for money work VERY hard for it.”

Sounds like you were working (for rewards), not playing (for fun.)

Sorry to hear that.

I enjoy both WvW and PvE content, both of which has achievements, the bread and butter of my playing existence. I was dismayed when I heard that there was going to be a season, to start with. The achievements I got done, every category, within a three week time frame, which could have easily been finished in a week or less, but I paced myself. I honestly do not know what I was expecting when the season ended, but I looked at it and thought to myself, “I could have gotten this just doing a round of dailies.” It was disappointing and underwhelming. Six tomes of experience, five master items, one rare, 500 luck essence and a dolyak miniature. Granted, my server finished fifth out of sixth. Still, it didn’t feel like a bonus after seven weeks of getting crushed week after week.

If something like this is planned for season 2, remove the end reward. Just don’t give one except for the miniature to everyone that completes the meta and finishers to the top three servers. Add in rewards to the individual achievements and let that be its own reward.

When information comes out saying “this part of the game will now have this mysterious shiny unknown reward if you play it!”, people will want to get that mysterious shiny.

People who are not fond of the specific game type might make an exception because they’re being led by the belief that there will be a mysterious, possibly unique reward waiting for them at the end. Nothing is set in stone of course but once people are informed a mysterious reward is available, naturally they don’t wanna miss the chance to get something amazing.

You honestly can’t blame people who played for the sake of the mysterious reward, it’s criminally close to a bait and switch situation.

Now once they finally look at all their hard work and are met with an incredibly underwhelming reward, naturally they’ll get upset. That mysterious reward which lured so many people into this trap is nothing more than a few lousy items that you get many of every day.

I myself am not a huge fan of WvW and was tempted to get the meta for the sake of the mysterious shiny, however after playing for a while I realized “wow this isn’t enjoyable” and stopped.

Needless to say I was torn up inside knowing I wasn’t gonna get that mysterious box for myself, after all anything could be in the box, even a boat. I am honestly extremely extremely glad I didn’t go for the meta, however you must understand the frustration of those that did.

Imagine if you were told to climb a mountain, that there would be a mysterious one time only reward for you on top of that mountain. Once you finally reached the top of a mountain there was a little slip of paper saying “good job!”, how offended would you be?

Of course it wasn’t a lie, wasn’t criminal, no one said there would be gold on top of that mountain. But it was implied something worth your time would be up there, and although it isn’t criminal, it most certainly is a jerk thing to do.

Yes there would be those that climbed the mountain because they enjoy climbing mountains and that’s just fantastic for them, they got what they wanted. But how about those that did it for the reward? They’ll be very upset.

On that note, what Anet did here is a very smart and generally nice way to give reason for people who don’t normally enjoy one type of game to give it a try. Saying there’s a mysterious reward will peak people’s interests and make them want to go for that reward, it’s only human.

The issue here is that said reward was garbage. It was great that Anet wanted to motivate people to play WvW but it was really lousy of them to give these people such lousy rewards, when the idea that something mysterious and unique was possibly available.

We’re not even saying give these people a precursor, or ascended stuff, or money. But they could have really done better, then again, a lot could have been done better.

Aside from makin us do a good amount of stuff. You could atleast give us something decent. This thing only appeals to few ppl but majority of the players knew they would get bullkitten from it. I my self expected 2 blues and 3 greens and a mini dolyak. But this is even worse then that.

The rewards were fine IMO, for me the best reward was the title.

I’m a PvE player who casually plays WvW and I got most achievements without actually trying, just by playing the game and having fun, I only had to go out of my usual gameplay to cap 50 ruins and like 70 supply camps, the reward chest was just a bonus.

What do you suppose would happen if everyone who completed it got an ascended weapon. Then everyone in the entire game would feel they have to participate next time, just because the rewards are so good.

The idea is to make it so you don’t have to do something you hate to get a reward. That’s it. And some people found out that they liked WvW more than they thought they would and play it now, which is another benefit of the season.

I don’t think the rewards should have been better. I think that this was a deliberate design decision because if people kept being forced to do something they didn’t enjoy,j over and over again (there’ll be more seasons), they’d end up leaving the game.

Not at all, if the reward was something like an ascended weapon or precursor or even some options at special armor and or weapon skins, it would only give people incentive. You don’t HAVE to complete any meta achievements. But people go out of their way time and time again just to get the gas mask, or node, or model, or mini, etc etc. This being the biggest and longest meta yet, the time put in doesn’t justify the rewards, period.

Plus, take the time people put Into completing this meta. Now convert that time into doing events, dungeons, farming, etc for mats and gear and building an ascended item and ppl could’ve done it just as well and actually gotten said item.

I would’ve rather spent that time and effort running fotm, dungeons, world bosses, leveling an alt and champ farming. I would’ve come out with a lot more to show for what I do every time I get online.

Basically, wvwers don’t care(or say they don’t but that’s all ever anyone talked about in ts on our downtime during the end weeks) and pvers and achievement/item hunters are upset.

I myself am a PVE player. I sometimes do WvW – rarely.
I went into this season specifically because of this " reward chest " ( That gave me 3 rares, 9 level scrolls and then useless items and greens). I thought it might be something to show off you were there for season 1 – maybe a skin – maybe something else.
These sort of rewards I did not expect. I feel that if the rewards had been announced earlier then me and a ton of other people wouldn’t have bothered. There are at least a dozen more fun ways to spend my time in game than grinding camps and dolyaks.

If the rewards had been nicely presented at the start of the season things would have been much better. The high number of PVE players the went into WvW for those rewards would have been lower – but at least at the end they wouldn’t have felt cheated AND it wouldn’t have frustrated the hardcore WvW players so much since players like me played it for the achievements.

Ultimately I’m disappointed – but somehow felt this sort of thing would happen. I didn’t want super duper ascended rewards – but an exclusive skin or title or whatever would have made it feel like it was worth my time. That wasn’t the case though.

With this sort of turn-up I doubt I’ll be participating in any more seasons from now on.
They had a chance with this reward – to maybe motivate PVE-oriented players to give WvW a chance and maybe let it grow on them. It certainly could have won me over – it was starting to. If the reward was nice I thought I’d actually start playing WvW seriously.

If here they fall they shall live on when ever you cry “For Ascalon!”

Those “real WvW” people spam the snot out of the F key if about to die. Loot.

The rewards sucked (sorry, Anet they did) no spin will change that. Basically the ball was dropped when they matched up the leagues AND allowed transfers. They were left with alienating those on low pop servers when they got meh loot or basically giving EVERYONE meh loot. I personally spent over 1k in guild cats etc trying to do my part to get my server into 2nd. I could have spent nothing and coasted to the same reward. Overall I would have done WvW without the reward … don’t dangle a carrot though and have it be rotten.

It comes down to WvW should not have better rewards compared to PvE. WvW has very limited capacity specially on T1 servers and players shouldn’t be encouraged to farm there. If you were rewarded better for your time spent in WvW vs. if you spent it in PvE, everyone would just WvW and clog up maps farming.

PvE players will ultimately play only for good rewards with least resistance and if in the 7 weeks of good fights etc. they didn’t like it, they wouldn’t like it in a million years unless they are given a reward comparable/better to spamming 1 in frostgorge or w/e is best farm right now.

With WvW maps having limited capacity, it’s probably the best move to keep the rewards better in PvE.

You PvE on PvE content to get good loot etc. You WvW to WvW and the rest you get is just a bonus.

This is my point of view as someone who spent alot of hours with abysmal rewards scouting/roaming/zerging etc. in WvW before Leagues but also does enough PvE to have legendaries.

Let us review the rewards for the meta achievement. You got around 330 achievement points. Meta achievements for two weeks LW are around 80. In this point you got the almost same amount of AP over 7 weeks. The rewards for LS metas are one mini or one skin or refined ascended materials. The Season 1 meta gave you one mini, ascended materials, a bunch of tomes, many greens and blues, 500 luck, several yellows and more. I think the rewards are quite comparable in value.

3. I meant I consider everything I got a bonus except the Empyreal Fragments because I’ve deleted over 100 of them already. Even greens I can sell for some silver but an extra 100 of something I’m just deleting is completely useless.

Not to mention that if you aren’t interested in ascended these items are just unsellable junk hassle that you have to constantly delete. I honestly wish I could just choose a box at login that gives me no more of them because I’m sick to death of having to repeatedly trash these three clutterjunks from my inventory. The rewards should take into account that many people are not into ascended and give an option like in story rewards when you can choose a box. Something like either 100 fragments or if you prefer, 100 copper.

Lol, I must not be a real WvW player because I’m constantly forgetting to loot, leaving bags scattered as I head off to the next objective. Could be because I’m not looking for a legendary. There’s a running gag in map chat about one player who is looking for his legendary screaming “Don’t let that enemy get away, he has my precursor!” Great tension breaker.

I won’t say what our guild spent on siege. If we weren’t constantly “splurging” on siege every chance we had, it meant we weren’t playing to win. We took our guild vault gold supply to near zero several times in the last two weeks, turned around ran dungeons and farmed to build it back up again only to be able to use it again in WvW. We didn’t do it for anything other than that old thing that DAoC players call “realm pride”. And we’d do it again. And probably will.

Didn’t have a problem with the contents of the chest. I really hope they keep the season one title unique.

I do agree that keeping the chest contents “mysterious” was a manipulative thing to do and in the end, I think that was a bad call. It’s inconsistent with the way they treat Living Story achievement rewards. I hope they look at reversing that policy.

I think the biggest problem was building player’s expectations that the rewards would be “big” and then not letting them judge ahead of time whether the rewards actually were meaningful.

For those who were there just for the rewards.

PS: “ouch” on the amount you spent on guild siege. I admire your dedication. /salute

BG: 52 alts, 29 lvl 80’s. They all look good, so I am done with the game: Oct 2014

I just want to point out a different point of view here. I can seriously understand why WvW players don’t want PVE players in WvW.

I felt the same way doing Battle Grounds in World of Warcraft. A few people who didn’t know what they where doing could seriously ruin a Battle Grounds group.

That said these lackluster rewards are going to end up damaging the game even more. I wonder how many people permanently left the game yesterday due to the monumental effort it took to complete season 1 WvW and the lackluster reward?

Anet has been trying to figure out away to retain lv 80 players who have been there done that. This was one of there way’s of doing it but it back fired and ended up losing them people.

The first thing I would be worried about if I was a huge wvw was how is Anet going to respond to the lose of players and the lose of WvW as a pve end game.

I didn’t think it took that much effort to do the meta achievement, and I’d never played WvW before.

It wasn’t quick, but I assume it was aimed at people who play WvW regularly anyway. But even I managed to do it in about 3 weeks, playing evenings and weekends only and taking a break for the Living Story stuff.

Bearing in mind you also got all the normal WvW rewards as well.

Those people need to get their collective heads out of their backsides. It can’t be helped. Can’t tell people what game modes they can and can’t play.

If they’re determined to stay which is more likely to yield a favorable outcome? Telling them to GTFO or showing them how it’s done?

With the former, if you can’t “make” someone leave in a situation where they’re certainly allowed to be there, all you’re going to do is engender defiance and breed conflict.

Good times, no?

What do you suppose would happen if everyone who completed it got an ascended weapon. Then everyone in the entire game would feel they have to participate next time, just because the rewards are so good.

No one here said they wanted ascended items as a reward, in fact the only mention of ascended gear was people saying they didn’t want ascended gear to be the reward.

Some players are acting like they didn’t get any rewards during the 7 weeks of Season 1.

Truth is I fill my bags at least 4x on any given WvW night. Imo, the mini-dolyak and trophy finishers were all that should have been included in the WvW chest, I think some players built up unfulfillable expectations.

Honestly – the “hardcore” WvW crew being all happy with non-WVW PVE players being disappointed with the rewards is missing the point entirely.
I didn’t go into WvW hoping the end chest would give me Dusk, or 100 gold.

My expectations were of a different nature – in a game that is powered primarily by COSMETIC changes – I expected a weapon/ armor skin exclusive to those who played this season. It would have made sense ( instead of a silly mini and some useless mats, a few yellows and let’s not forget – finishers).

It wouldn’t have been a reward that would have broken the economy , it wouldn’t have created tension between high tier and low tier servers – it would have been something cool and unique that players could have.
But we didn’t get that – I’m not upset that Anet didn’t reward me with gold or valuable items – I know that WVW is not profitable and if I want gold I should farm PVE hard not kill yaks and take camps BUT I do feel upset that overall they really went wrong with the rewards on this one. For both WvW and Non-WvW players.

Another issue was the reward being " super secret " – this was a poor strategy to get people who were not into WvW to go there. It worked – but now that the gig is up people like me feel disappointed. I feel tricked into doing it.
If the reward had been posted prior – I wouldn’t have bothered.

Why is that a good thing ? because I’m not a WvW player – and still I was there – in EB and the borderlands taking up space – running specifically what I needed to run in order to get my achievements – wasting supply and running karma trains and whatnot – while people who love WvW were stuck in queues. Why ?! Because Anet didn’t bother to specify which players would be interested by these rewards by making them public.

I hope this is an experience they can learn from – I certainly have – Not going to bother with WvW rewards unless they are : 1 ) announced prior to season start. 2) worth the time and effort.

If here they fall they shall live on when ever you cry “For Ascalon!”

And which exactly players would be interested in those rewards? If you notice, even those that defend them are saying that those rewards aren’t worth anything. It’s just they think it’s a good thing.

Anet didn’t specify those rewards, because if they did, then noone would care about those at all. Which would make the rewards completely unnecessary.

Anet was unwiling to give meaningful rewards, but wanted players to think they would be meaningful. Which is why they hid the truth.
Of course, that’s a trick you cannot use too often, because eventually people will learn that it’s smoke and mirrors.
Though seeing how many actually believed there would be something good in that chest, they really should learn faster. It’s not like it was the first or even second time, after all.

And that is exactly why the WvW-ers liked the “poor” rewards: because next time people who are only there only for the achievements and just took up space will not be bothered to do them.
Much better than having amazing rewards this time and then 3 hour queues in home bl with 10 plp on commander and 50 zerging ruins. And I am not even a hardcore WvW-er.

PS: I loved the title – personally I feel that was reward enough.
