Q:

What was the reason for GW2 to have no secondary profession?
As a huge GW1 fan for 5+ years, I cannot understand this. Please enlighten me. I miss secondary professions.

Honestly, I can’t remember. Elite specializations are said to kinda sorta be like secondary professions though. The professions as we have them now are then similar to just using your primary profession in GW1. As more elite specializations are added to the game, a character has access to more and more secondary professions.

I think it was a balancing issue. Giving everyone access to almost every skill meant an almost infinite combination of skills and a balancing nightmare for the devs. Do you remember how often they used to patch the game and the OP builds that used to appear? They dumbed down GW2 to make their balancing work easier.

I also miss the freedom of GW skill use via secondary professions.

I agree with Eceni, it’s certainly a balance issue to an extent.

I also remember that the developers were saying that they wanted each profession to really have its own feel. Obviously, allowing secondary professions dilute this a lot.

I also don’t really see how this would work with GW2 mechanics and trait system.
In the beginning, stat points were also allocated with trait lines, so if you could choose between two different professions’ traitlines, it could be possible to spec into two traitlines that assigned power.

You could also spec into two traits that both gave you a damage boost on your weapon of choice.

The synergies would be so complicated and overpowered that it would be a nightmare to balance. I can imagine a lot of 1-hit builds, which cheapens the game somewhat.
