All other MMO’s I’ve played I’ve been able to see the damage that everybody else is doing as well as my own. This has always been pretty handy for seeing just how strong you rank compared to others and it looked especially good on a 2D MMO I used to play as the numbers would stack up and look awesome in boss fights.

So I was wondering why there’s no option to have it in GW2. I’m level 80 now and play an Ele which supposedly has one of the highest DPS’s in the game. I regularly watch my other half on her PC playing her Guardian which is quite a bit weaker than me so I know that I’m doing okay at the moment but then I always have the curiosity of what other classes around me are doing. Like I heard some guildies talking about doing 25k damage on their Warriors, etc and I’m wondering how on Earth they manage it (unless they just mean Hundred blades stacking.

Basically it would be nice to see the damage of other people so when I’m in a dungeon doing 5-6k crits with my Lightning Hammer, whether that’s doing a good job or whether I’m being outdamaged by somebody else because they have better gear or whatever. Even if they made the other digits for other players damage a different colour or size so that you can always see which is yours?

What do you think?

It doesn’t always have to be a contest of DPS though, I’m not asking for a DPS meter, I’m asking for visual aid to see how much damage people are doing as at the moment I don’t know if 1000 per auto-attack is good or whether I should be doing more like 3000.

At the end of the day MMO’s are meant to be about improving your gear and skills to increase damage. Fair enough, some classes may be more ‘supportive’ so a DPS meter wouldn’t fully show how helpful someone is towards the party but if I was going with guildies it wouldn’t matter how much damage people were doing, as long as we were doing it.

Not everyone joins pug groups and then does the dungeon in fear of being kicked. I just want to gauge my damage compared to other classes.

I’m using one of my classes ‘optimal’ builds so I’m sure I’m about average – I’m not bothered about my class though, I’d like to see other peoples.

And I don’t see how asking every player I party with what damage they do is really a brilliant idea as this will change depending on boons, might, critical damage, etc etc. And then Gear is a large part of it and traits so really it would just be easier to have the option to see it…

GW2 will never wee any type of damage meters or the ability to see other players damage done.

The reason is simply this game has such blatant balance issues Anet would never let something out that proves just how bad it is.

Also, While damage meters are not a bad thing as they give players more information to improve the problem they would also bring is that certain classes/specs would never get a group again if this was ever released with GW2 in it’s current state.

I myself like damage meters , but I understand with such bad balance why Anet won’t allow this.

ANet moderators do not trashcan threads asking ANet to put in a damage meter. Those 2 threads were discussing something other than an ANet-created meter.

As to the OP. I don’t oppose his request to see others’ damage numbers, but I would oppose an implementation that would not let me turn that display off. The game already provides too much screen flash in the form of particle eyesore.

Im not a super or power player. Im very casual, so my build isnt that great. I play a thief mostly, and more often then not I am using my shortbow because Im just no good with the melee combat in a dungeon setting. I honestly think I am doing sub-par damage output with my bow, so if someone could truly see how I am doing, I would probably never get groups. I want to do more dungeons, but there are few groups as is. Everyone is running the train and doing world bosses. I’ve literally never seen the inside of Sarrow’s Embrace or honor of the Waves since launch. The only dungeon I’ve completed all paths on is CoE. Hell, I didnt even know about paths until 6 months in. The last thing I need is some new reason I cant get a group.

I’m not afraid of being potentially judged by my performance, berrated by “elitists” or being kicked from groups. That is all nonsense.

Ultimately I think there are just technical limitations that would prevent data from every player around you from being displayed in your combat log, as well as it being a low priority. Unless you wanna purchase a combat log upgrade for 1200 gems, haha.

You think there are balant mis-balances? Please give examples. In PvP and WvW it is not that way at all. A.Net has stated BEFORE THE GAME WAS IN BETA, that anything that gave a player even the slightest remote possibility of an advantage, it wouldn’t be allowed in game.

You can figure out how much damage you are doing in Heart of the Mists there are dummies, etc to practice on. DPS meters are just for people to brag an be ‘leetist’ with. After playing TERA, WoW, Rift , and even ESO beta, they all were the same way. the Meters end up pushing the balance only one way and that is not the point of this game.

I know a game that has such a combat log. It can be very annoying when you’re trying to observe your own performance. Even if there is no back-end technical reason in GW2, the front end issue of limited window size plus damage figures from all and sundry make seeing your own a pain.

WoW had a combat log that pulled from your group or everyone around you. But you could also filter it to just show your damage, and display that filter in a separate window.

This is without mods/addons.

But WoW also had a pretty fantastic and maliable UI. I think Anet wants to avoid UI stuff so you can focus on the epileptic particle effects, however :/

Yeah… the game I was referring to was CO, which did not have a filtering option. As to UI, I agree that GW2 lacks desirable UI customization features, and that for whatever reason ANet wants me to look at FX that give me headaches. For that reason, I’d prefer that if a feature to see others’ damage were to be implemented, it be in the combat log or via a command rather than putting more visual clutter on the screen.

If they do this it should not be floating damage numbers. There are enough effects and numbers popping up on my screen already and I would prefer to be able to actually see what is going on. Maybe have it in the combat log and make it so you can separate it from chat.

One of my most memorable moments from WoW was when my guild beat BWL (40 man raid) for the first time. What was memorable about it was when we checked the combat log after the fight, the last bit of damage that killed Nef (the last boss in BWL) was a poison tick from one of our rogues. We all thought that was pretty hilarious.

It would be like if the first time your guild downed Teq it was because of a burn tick or something relatively insignificant that finished him off.

Not having that kind of info isn’t game breaking or anything, but having the info on that little poison tick from the combat log to reflect on really stuck out for me and made it really memorable.

Let me tell you what all these threads always come to

Basically 1 camp want to have a DPS for legitimate theory crafting purposes, and I don’t think anyone disagrees with them, or whether or not they should be able to do so.

But 2 camps are pretty much at war with each other, the ones who follow and expect pugs to be in the most efficient (best) gear for PvE (Zerker), and those who want to play in whatever gear they want.

But the argument always boils down to: Do I have the right as the creator of the party to enforce a dps/gear check on randoms/pugs that join.

As in, if a make a party “LFM zerker gear 6k DPS only” and someone joins and does 4k dps you kick them for underperforming.

and why are people mad that these topics come up? The whole point of the forums is to have discussion on things, especially controversial things. If you just instantly delete threads like these and suppress any kind of outside thinking then you have an echochamber not a forum.

this is spot on.

But even worse, a DPS meter is not a good predictor for performance. It is feedBACK not feedFORWARD. It feeds you back the info from your performance. If you boot someone for bad dps, you would have to do it well into the run to where it wouldn’t be worth it at that point.

A zerker gear ping will still be the king in reinforcing zerker only groups.

The other threads were deleted because they spoke about using an illegal third-party program to monitor the DPS and devoled into TOS arguments.

This thread will likely be fine if people stay on-topic and avoid insults.

On-topic: I am fully in support of combat logs, but not meters. A log showing attacks from your entire group (without damage) is just fine to me. This would help others to see how much they get carried in a fight, and I think this would be very beneficial to the game because the “elites” would see how much they get carried.

Yes, it may turn back into “You didn’t heal me!!!” like in other games instead of “You’re not doing enough damage so I died!!”, but its better than nothing.

I really wish Anet would release an official statement on DPS meters. A lot of the discussions about them on other sites had valid arguments of why they “weren’t” necessarily breaking the ToS, and that it was completely up to interpretation (on anets part).

I know one of the devs said they wanted to work with app/mod developers in the future, but what have they done? I sure some anet is just afraid of giving an OK on a mod that could potentially become a hack tool if the author wanted it to (not officially overseen). But on the other hand they don’t want to work with someone on their dps meter because it could come off as they condone the elitist attitude that will come with it.

It would be nice if anet did start working on proper mod support, like almost every other MMO. Could add a lot of good things to the game besides a dps meter.

Thanks for keeping the topic on discussion and contributing to the thread guys. I played last night and it has reinforced my point even more that there needs to be some sort of combat log, NOT because I want to kick people who aren’t ‘zerker’, but just because it might encourage people to attack more than just trying to survive (when ultimately that will result in death).

I did Ascalonion Catacombs P2 with some ‘less experienced’ guildies last night. One person I knew had just turned 80 and didn’t have optimal gear or a decent build yet (he’d been building a healing water ele build even though I’d told him he’d probably be more of a burden than a help), one was a Guardian who I know doesn’t do great DPS as it’s my other half and she is still a bit new to dodging, one was a Warrior who used Sigils for the whole run until he realised he’d be better off with banners and shouts and one was a ranger who I know is a good player but he’d never done the path before.

Anyway we struggled through some of the early stages as the group didn’t really know how to stack and we weren’t doing enough DPS to make it effective but we eventually got through to Ghost Eater. It took us a good 30mins to get the strategy right (only 1 of us had done it before and even then his group had been forced to quit) so filling the traps was tough. When we eventually nailed the strategy and it came to doing damage to the Ghost Eater once he’d triggered the trap I felt like I was the only one doing damage out of everyone. The ‘water’ ele was just there putting healing spells down, the warrior was nowhere to be seen (probably using a bow because he was too afraid to get up close), the Guardian was too afraid to use her GS so was stood there using her staff and the ranger kept going down.

I’m not even joking it took about 2 hours to finish the last bit of AC P2 and I honestly think it’s just because people weren’t attacking and most of it was left to me with my LH to try and take some serious health off him.

Now I’m not saying I’d have been there like “COME ON GUYS, IM THE ONLY ONE DOING DAMAGE, BUCK UP”. But I do feel like if there is a visual aid to show what people are actually contributing then it would encourage people to play better and maybe take some responsibility for themselves. For all I know I could have solo’d the bloomin thing last night.

The people opposed to this idea must be the ones who don’t feel they’re good enough to be in a party in the first place otherwise you wouldn’t have an issue with it. Perhaps it is because Anet don’t want to show their inbalanced classes off for the world to see. Or perhaps it’s just because the game is meant to be casual and not focused on DPS. But at the end of the day, if you’re only joining PUG runs then you’re always going to encounter idiots so a ‘combat log’ wouldn’t change anything. If you’re going with guild members or friends then you’re never going to get kicked for your damage, they might just ask you to look at improving your build afterwards or give you some tips of what you can do because at the moment people could be running whatever build they want and nobody would know any different which isn’t fair to the people who have worked kitten their build and their combos and are effectively carrying a party. I don’t mind people using what build they want to use, but how can we help people improve that build unless we can see how effective it is for ourselves?

It took some time, but cyber elitism, thinly veiled bragging and kitten flexing already seeped through most aspects of this game as well. If a skada or recount were introduced, the whole game would change instantly, and frankly I don’t even think Anet itself would be capable of keeping up with the balance pressure.

Ranger MIA you just lost 20 percent of your party’s damage and the ele in water should have been in fire scepter/dagger smashing some might for you guys at each trap. Only one member even had the faintest idea of how to do the encounter and it wasnt you so what are you going on about? Unless you charged all the traps again with the boss aggrod after the first three were used I’m pretty sure you didnt solo this. Wait you guys didnt charge the traps with the boss aggrod did you? That is hardmode in which case no wonder. This is what we need players who have to l2p going over the logs telling us what we are doing wrong. No amount of logs are going to help your party. What helped your party was sticking it out and finishing the path. Your party learned to play that night even though the process was painful. Good Go. You all have my respect as a player for that.

No we filled the traps before we aggro’d it, it was when it came to attacking him that we struggled as we weren’t doing enough fire-power. I know that I personally didn’t understand the strategy to start with but when it came to attacking I knew how to get us 15-18 stacks of might and pound it up close with a hammer without dying.

We used all 3 traps and he still had about 20% health left so we had to negotiate it so he dropped his blobs within a trap so we could just ‘lift’ them to charge it.

I agree though, it was a great effort in the end and we all went a bit nuts as we had been on the verge of quitting 3 or 4 times before then. We started at 8:00pm GMT and we finished at about 10:40pm (that’s the whole dungeon) so it really was an awfully long run. As much as we were all glad we’d done it, we couldn’t help but feel a stronger party would have blitzed it pretty easily. We had the trap strategy spot on, we just couldn’t dish out the damage to get it done.

I’d rather they actually implement condition damage in combat logs before adding other players’ damage, tbh.

I can see the argument for seeing other players’ damage though. I’m not sure I agree with it, so it would have to be optional. Especially for WvW, in which all that info would probably lag out every single person when several zergs consisting of 100+ people overall are right on top of each other.
