Evening all.

First i just must say that you guys on ANet are doing a great work. Now to the topic:
Is it just me or do it feels like the hammer and warhorns designers need to get a bash? Nearly all the hammers in the game are small, thin and missing the lack of impact.
Seems like the designers dont like hammers.
We dident get a superhammer skin, the dragon jade skin doesent look like a hammer (more like a axe or something) and now with the new achivepoint skins the hammer is small and boring and looks more like a bigger mace and compare it to the greatsword and ppl starts to cry (forcing ppl to play with the GS just for the looks). Even the legendary Juggernaut looks more like a staff.
A hammer should be heavy and crush, slam and make a big impact on hit and not plow a small line in the ground where ppl can plant potatos :/

Cant you guys that designt hammers make them more like they should be…nearly all ive been talking to always get disappointed when you release a new hammer skin.
Its a 2-handed weapon that should be heavier then all the weapons in the game in my opinion.

And the warhorns…pleaze make them more desirable. The are so small, grey and boring.

Best regards Nico

Can’t talk about warhorns, since I don’t really use them much, but personally I do like the hammers and depending on the skin, there are several that look and feel VERY heavy.

http://dulfy.net/2013/01/20/gw2-hammer-skins-gallery/

I do agree that there are some that look more like greataxes than hammers, along with some that intentionally look like something else (maces, anchors, candy canes), but still I like the variety so far.

And I know it’s subjective, but personally I disagree that all hammers are thin and lacking impact, specially when comparing it to a RL sledgehammer or a real warhammer.

The two best warhammer skins in the game are the Krytan and Guild hammers. It’s all downhill, and very rapidly, from there. Most of them are just dumb. I do kind of like the one that looks like an enormous morningstar though. But really, the options are limited.

There are so many awesome looking real life weapons to take inspiration from, too, which is the sad part. Lucerne hammers, those Swiss guard polehammers, gothic hammers, and so on.

Hammers in this game look like kitten for the most part, excluding Juggernaut, Mjolnir, the Fractal Hammer, and the Hammer present in the Cliffside fractal, used to free the colossus. They are, like you said, mostly too small.

This new Zenith skin has so much potential, but somehow the designers still managed to kitten it up. The head of the hammer should be much bigger, with more crystals. The Dragon Jade skin is very well designed, and looks nice, but why are the two dragon heads so small?

I mean really, did the designers actually take a step back and think, yeah, that’s awesome, the players are going to love that, just like they loved all our other hammer’s.

And we know its not a case of weapon designers in general being lazy, what with the Zenith great sword skin being so fantastic, along with most of the other great swords, I might add. And look at the Dragon shield. What a masterpiece of fantasy weapon design.

I beg of you Anet, please start introducing some decent looking hammer’s. We know you have the ability to create great looking weapons, and sometimes hammers. Think of the hammer users out there.

Maces are in even worse shape. Once again, Krytan and Guild are the best looking ones and the rest are horrible. Whispers mace was almost good, but the orb part is much too large.

I don’t use maces so cant really comment on the looks of them, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they were as lackluster as the hammer’s.

I think the problem is, all of the really special looking hammer skins, like the ones I mentioned previously, are extremely difficult to acquire. The legendary is incredibly expensive (which is another problem for another thread, I mean what the kitten, here’s a legendary weapon to suit your legendary coin purse), the fractal hammer is rewarded through RNG, Mjolnir is very expensive, and the Cliffside hammer is not available to players as far as I know. I also noticed a very nice hammer in the Dulfy guide. The Icebreaker. What a superb looking skin, available to those who PLAY A kittenING DIFFERENT GAME WHAT THE kitten?!

It also seems like hammer’s can appear much better proportioned depending on the gender and race of the player wielding. Judging by the link given by Locoman, it would seem this is especially true of females.

I kinda agree, some of the hammers are quite small and don’t even look like hammers. I’d like them to be a little larger, especially the large part whatever you call it. The Zenith hammer, it just blew my mind. It was so small.

Juggernaut is really nice, I just wish the tip had been a little more hammer shaped, like a rectangle, instead of an orb. Otherwise really nice.

But yeah, maces are much worse so I won’t complain too much.

yes i agree

i crafted juggernaut and thats the only acceptable hammer next to colossus/magmaton, orrian hammer (not arah skin), and the cliffside one

i agree with Axos.6142 on everything but on the fractal hammer being acceptable..

why?

the shaft is sooooo thin … thinner than at a staff and it looks like it would break with the first hit!!!
looks like crap and is ugly even though the hammer head is nice

i think all hammers in the game could need a 20-40% increse in size (different for every hammer but they definitly need to be bigger)

would equate with the mace in the game

What the, accurate portrayal of historical weapons fanatics among you seem to be forgetting is, this is a fantasy game, and those hammer’s you linked, no matter how real, look like kitten.

For you to come to this thread and and claim hammer’s are too unrealistic (in terms of size) already and that we need make them smaller is outrageous, considering 95% of weapons in GW2 and nearly every other sword and shield MMO decide not to adhere to the principals of realism.

If you do insist on being ridiculous, feel free to post a sketch of your pole-hammer version of the legendary, and perhaps your pole-hammer version of the zenith weapons. It’ll look like kitten, but realism in MMO’s is very important. I do think however we are going to need a complete weapons and armor overhaul, and dragons? C’mon.

I have to agree, the Hammer designs in this game are rather lacklustre. I too pretty much agree with Axos. While there is a handful of decent hammer skins (all of which we’ve already covered), these are few and far between and tend to be very difficult to acquire (350 Charged Lodestone for Mjolnir…might as well be a legendary). My biggest gripe too is that they are almost all small (at least on a human male), and most of them have more historical rather than traditional fantasy types of design (not many big fancy blunt blocks on the end of a stick, too many elaborate hefts with finite and pointed ends). It’s personal taste I guess, but it’d be nice to have both.

The issue here is, I believe Anet did indeed put less design work and attention into Hammers in the game. Hammers have never been as popular as swords, and in this game they are utilized far less, having more niché purposes and only being availiable on two professions. The same issue applies to Maces. Under-utilized and their gameplay purpose doesn’t really fit in with the game’s DPS orientation (except perhaps Warrior off-hand Mace).

The reason we have so many nice Sword and Greatsword skins (and a good amount of decent St@ff5 [censored for some reason] too for that matter) is because half the professions can use Greatswords, and if I’m not mistaken more than half can use Swords. As they are far more widely utilized, it makes sense I guess to put more focus on designing a wider variety of popular skins.

Somewhere down the line it’d be nice if they give Hammer to Rangers (not sure why they didn’t give them this to begin with instead of Greatswords, considering GW1’s legacy), and Maces to Engineers (they have plenty of 2H weapon options due to kits, but a very limited amount of 1H weapons). This would give them a good excuse and opportunity to expand upon the variety and selection of Maces and Hammers in the game.

Absolutely KotCR, that is a big problem. The reason I feel so strongly about it now is the Zenith skin could be fantastic with just a few tweaks. I know nothing about graphic design, or getting models in game, and I cant draw for kitten, but I reckon even I could implement some changes to it that would set it in the right direction at least.

Wow, get a little more hostile over nothing, why don’t you? Whooo-kay.

I personally find more realistic looking hammers to be more pleasing to the eye. That’s an opinion. I guess I haven’t played enough Whack-a-Dredge to share your aesthetic taste. Sue me. As far as legendaries go? You could make a very kitten looking polehammer while keeping it small, if you use the right effects on it. Not everything has to look like this, but I wouldn’t mind seeing one or two available.

Anyway, I don’t need to be insulted over the internet by some guy who gets bent out of shape because someone prefers a different style of hammer weapon. Have fun.

I´m in two minds about it.
On the one hand I hate the ridiculous “Final Fantasy” swords we have in this game and the Hammer designs are actually more realistic as Sil pointed out.

Still some artistic leeway would have been nice.
And why oh why do the best hammers have to be simply copies of plain vanilla Guardian/Ele skills??

And yay me, I chose the Hammer as my first chest skin. Figuring everybody else will choose Avenger anyway, making it as common as a standard two-hander.
I thought that skin actually looked half decent in the preview, will have to swing it around some tonight.

I didn’t wish to upset you Sil, and I absolutely respect your opinion, however, to use realism as a basis for your argument, in the context of a fantasy game is absurd.

As for making a legendary pole-hammer, well yes with the right effects it could be nice, but in terms of hammer’s its become apparent that realism is just a byword for minimalism. Take the pole-hammer example you gave us. It doesn’t get much simpler than that. Very small, very basic. How do you add ( and what do you add) effects to something that is designed to be so simplistic.

They could just do both, right now most hammers are fairly realistically proportioned, excepting a few with short handles or a slightly oversized head, but none are really really exaggerated to the point you find other weapons.

Example, look at Greatswords, there are plenty that look like a realistically proportioned longsword or Claymore, and there are also many with size exaggerated to a ridiculously unrealistic level. And I know people who like both ends of the scale.

If hammer users want more hammers that are exaggerated, then I see no reason why some couldn’t be made. I like most of the hammers as they are, but I see no reason why other aesthetics can’t be touched on.

I’m thinking most of the obviously metallic weapons are actually way too large if you’re talking realism. Even the default white hammer has a head at least as big as my character’s head. That’d weigh like 30lbs…

I agree that the majority of hammer models in this game are, shall we say, unsatisfying.

Most share a common problem, the head is simply too thin.

As a developer, I’m guessing that there were some stringent model dimension constraints specified to avoid excessive clipping issues and other animation and model interaction issues.

There is probably a way to tweak things for a particular model (which I’d speculate is why not all hammers suffer from this problem), but in order to minimize per-model adjustments most hammers adhere to the constraints.
