I put in a post in this thread about what people want from the gem store asking for a helm, not a potion but a permanent helm, that is like the Guild Wars 1 halo.

I really like the idea of toggle-friendly flair, flexible enough to function without swapping out an armor piece.

Its a lot more reliability to post pic with only the effect on with out any gear or any self targeting. If you cant its coming off as if you want to fake something.

Perhaps the intent is misunderstood:

I point out in the original post that the [Selfless Potion] halo rests too high and is too transparent above the head of a character. I took a screenshot, fully geared and self-targeted, to accurately demonstrate how another player will see my character while adorned with the halo effect in its current poor state.

I don’t think they’re going to fix it unless players make a big enough fuss about it, with that said i think the halo and horns have so much potential and could use a few tweaks to make them perfect

Unfortunately I am a little disappointed by the halo, I have not played Guild Wars 1, but that halo is absolutely perfect from what I have seen and heard compared to the newer one, I strongly suggest that the Anet developers reassess the halo’s appearance and use attributes as they did with the flame kissed armor. The developers are very great for the fact that they made a beautiful game and I hope they can make this halo better than it is now. Thank you so much Anet for a great game and I hope you can fix the problems stated above for us devoted players. <3

I was so excited at the possibility of a halo. Having gotten it….it is a little underwhelming. It’s also sad I can’t wear it on my mesmer, at least not without making it obvious which is me and which is not. At certain angles it looks fine, but for the most part the halo is so subtle it can be easily missed. Which for as much work went into getting all the heirlooms (which I’m sure it was a lot more work for those who can’t play every day) it just is sad. I wish it had the same glow power as the radiant skin. That would have been fantastic….

I was really hoping for the halo from GW 1. It was gorgeous. ^ ^ This halo is barely ‘ok’.

And what is with this ‘reward’? We grind out the heirlooms and then have to kick in 10g? Really? O.o

Please fix this so that it’s worthy of a 10g investment. I want to easily see this halo. I want others to easily see this halo….I want SPARKLES! lol

I don’t want to have to re-click the icon every time I map, etc. It’s a pain in the kitteh. I want to wear it where ever I go. ^ ^

Only if you zoom in it is too high the name get bigger and lower as you zoom in at max zoomed out or even just 1/2 way it looks ok. It ok to point out flaws about this but ppl are taking pic with other things up that could interfere with them and it makes it look like they are trying to interfere if that the only way they are going to take pic. Why dose the OP have them self targeted why dose another pic have the election badges up? These things can get in the way and it calls in question what they are talking about i just want there to be clear pic so it can be fixed if needed and as soon as it can be done.

Absolutely hate that my nameplate covers the halo. I got it and many in my guild wanted to see what it looked like, only to find they couldn’t see it unless they turned off player names. Very very disappointing.

Invictus’ experience is accurately demonstrated in the shot, and reproducible by the community.

Players at close proximity cannot notice or see the halo, and one can sensibly suggest such lack of visibility — further degrades with respect to distance, by reason of high transparency and lack of contextual luminosity.

I am just asking for a better pic with out your name lit up like that is all. It will give a much cleaner pic also having a darker back ground and only your name in the pic will make a great deal better ideal what is going on.
From what i can tell its like having armor on the size of the halo is set relative to your hero so if you zoom in your name will get bigger and close to your hero but the halo will not. The same thing will happen with armor but say head gear just simply dose not go up that high to be comply seen. So think of it like something statistic you put over your head then the armor comes into play at the same time if the armor cover it up or the halo cover up will work out. In a way you have to mix and match what looks best for you. But due to how high the halo is you will cover it up with a name if you zoom in too close if you make it lower on the person then armor will cover it up.
My point is the halo and horns are a very small part and the only true way to fix it is most likely changing the name height and that would be a major thing to ask for 2 items in the game.

Something i would like to ask about GW1 was the halo head armor to where it simply replayed the armor or was it more of an side thing that you could have it showing and the head armor at the same time?

I really like the idea of toggle-friendly flair, flexible enough to function without swapping out an armor piece.

So do I. However my personal feeling is, with this halo it’s a good as it’s going to get. I don’t believe they will update or improve it in any way. I base this feeling on the numerous complaints about clipping with Charr armor, including the Charr cultural armor made specifically for Charr, never fixed. Numerous posts about how Sylvari armor is too “puffy”, how the armor makes those characters look ridiculously fat. Never fixed. Numerous complaints how shoulder pads float and shoulder pads, gloves and boots are too big for the characters. Never fixed. The Watchknight potion, which like the halo was a LS reward, it can only be used for 5 minutes then has a THIRTY minute cooldown. Numerous complaints, never fixed. Numerous requests for medium and light armor without coats and buttcapes. Never answered and each new armor released has those features.

Now, I would be delighted to be proven wrong but ANet’s history is on my side. It was for that reason that I suggested people ask for helms in the gem store that is halo and horns. They are more likely to do a good job there if money is involved. And maybe, just maybe, they will then bring back the Guild Wars 1 halo because I don’t think it’s going to happen with this one.

agreed with Astral Projections, T2 norn armor is broken since launch, in almost 2 years they never fixed and its cultural for norn, how can you get more wrong then this, an armor made for only one type of character and still cliping as crap. Probably they hope this post will die down in time and slide to oblivion…. sad
As for my infraction replying to this thread I still think it cost more to do a crapy job then fix it, instead to do it right in first place.

The constant need to reapply the halo/horns effect is very annoying.

So, it’s just like mini’s then? Not even good enough as a cosmetic >.<’

Surely anet can come up with an “always use” option or something… … less and less interested in this, think I’ll use my heirlooms on bags

I thought they where potions? Don’t all potions behave that way?

The buff potions I use never fizzle off while zoning, and works in all instances whatsoever.

This is still a flair item, even if it is a triggered one. If it was advertised as a hovering dulll golden ring, then I would have no problem with how it looks, even if it is placed a bit iffy. But they specifically called it a halo.

Completely agree with some of the requests about the restrictions, having it disappear when zoning and not being able to use it in dungeons at least, seems way too kittened since it’s a harmless item with a harmless buff. I don’t understand why it has to be a buff even, it should be on until you take it off yourself or when you die.

I like the subdued look to it, but I agree on the illogical 59 minute duration and reapplication after zoning. If the birthday booster and food duration buff can last 24 hours and persist beyond death and zone change then there’s no reason this buff can’t as well.

Great observations. I tested in-game and the potion can be manually toggled off; the proposed functionality is half-way there. It is now a matter of flagging down all mechanics that remove/deny the potion effect.

I just don’t understand why it’s seemingly impossible to keep the effect unless you, you know, TRIGGER it on or off.
As it was said, the representation buttons work perfectly and everywhere. It’s the same with Minis. They already made it so they aren’t automatically deposited with mats (great!) but why can’t we have persistent toggle-able Minis and the Halo?

Bugs should have priority, of course, but I can’t imagine that changing such things would require too much workload and can’t be done. GW2 is a game about looks. About skins. About character customization, ultimately.
Then why are so many things that should support this buggy or uncomfortable to use?

I’m hopeful that these potions are the first in a new line of non-equipment-based optional cosmetic effects. If so, it’s understandable that they have not yet worked out all the little details of that system, so what we see with the halo and horns right now is like a first draft that will improve over time as it becomes a more important reward system in the game. If that is the case, I would expect to see all these concerns addressed in time. On the other hand, if this was merely a one-off concept that they don’t plan to pursue further, then I wouldn’t expect them to spend any more resources on making it work any better than it does now.

So, I want to put it out there that I support this type of cosmetic item as a concept, and hopefully if enough of us do, we’ll see the system refined and improved.

Your desire is well founded.

This fresh mechanic to cosmetic items has great potential to be a new and unique reward-type to persuade the masses. And consider its application in the gem shop: the plug-in-play go-flair mechanic guarantees not to interfere with any appearance a user currently has equipped; they can even be made to stack, when reasonable.

That was my main reason for not bothering at all once I found out. Sure it could be hard to get a nice fit with all the hairstyles and helmets and what-not, but things needs to make sense. A non-radiant halo and floating horns that are not embedded in the forehead… I dunno, it does not make much sense to me.

I can understand if this was rushed through (which it looks to me) to get the job done, but I would rather they spend more time making things like this than trying to meet a deadline.

I sincerely like the effort to introduce the selfless and thoughtless potions as new form of flare, but the mechanics have areas that need improvement.

The unearned Evon Gnashblade and Ellen Kiel badges are persistent when transforming, zoning, and allowed in dungeons/spvp/ fractals; yet, the earned Selfless or Thoughtless Potion effect are not. The effect is either denied, or removed during the normal course of gameplay. For example, during a world boss trains, the effect will be taken off after porting to different regions.

Furthermore, the offset of the effect is at equal height with the character nameplate, effectively covering up the appeal all together. Although the halo is already too translucent to be noticeable even at close proximity, the fact that it is also covered by the nameplate makes it virtually unnoticeable.

Summary restriction and limitation:

  • Restricted in dungeons.
  • Restricted in fractals.
  • Restricted in sPvP.
  • Effect removed upon zoning
  • Effect blocked by nameplate (selfless potion halo)
  • Effect too translucent to be noticed (selfless potion halo)
  • (new) Effect is not applied to Mesmer clones. [»]
  • (new) Effect is too low and too small on Asura. [»] [»]
  • (new) Effect removed upon transformation (e.g., tonic, mist form, elite).

(The election badges suffer from none of the above.)

I hope the restriction and limitation points listed above are simply an oversight that will be addressed, as they conflict with the very nature of the item function; a new form of shiny flair to enhance character presentation.

Thoughts?

Yesod

Please also add to your list that it lasts longer. 24hrs if anything, or that you could double click it to enable/disable it. One hour is just too much hustle really. It’s one of the things that ends up stored on your bank till you have to destroy it to make up space for other things and it shouldn’t be like that.

Also, as a software engineer myself, I trully enjoy when Anet gives us information and explinations on why somethings are or not possible or viable. Like the cooldown on pets and elementals cause of the stress they were putting on the servers.

If the fix on the halo is not possible or viable I think many people would like to have an answer so that those of us who care, can better understand the engine on which we spend hours playing every week and can better dicern what can and can’t be done on future releases.

Just my thought.

Well, and I’m just positing this, perhaps even they do not know. Perhaps the issue is not with the artist, but the structure of their chain-of-command, such that, the vetting process for main-stream reward/premium content has much needed room for improvement. Example, look how the original flamekissed light armor was vetted into a release (to which ANET then handled corrected with exemplary prowess [thank you]).

However compared to the voting badge, I must say it’s a lot less functional.

Voting Badge and horns can work together
Horns do not work with Quaggan transformation but Voting Badge does
Horns do not work with Clockwork transformation but Voting Badge does

My Conclusion:
Please reuse the Voting Badge code for the Horns.

If people spent real money on an item and arent happy, they can make a fuss and get the money returned. So its in anets interest to solve that as soon as possible.

This on the other hand, how many people will stop playing over this?

All I can say about this is that I’m frustrated about the whole situation. It’s like ANet never checked to see what it would look like on asuras. I just got a halo for my asura today, while my friend, a charr, got theirs as well. Their halo is much larger and high/directly above their head, even though it’s translucent, it’s still easy enough to see. While mine is tiny, very low and near my forehead. It’s just not fair that I spent this much time looking for heirlooms for something no one can see, when I could have been saving citizens and earning a ton of bags and gold.
