Damage has already been done. Players already know what servers are best when it come to PVP. Those who wanted to jump the ship, have already done so.

Now the real question is that if the servers who are lacking in W v W would get new folks or not. Something i really doubt.

The guesting system is designed to let me play with all my GW2 playing friends, without any of us having to ditch our more traditional guilds within the game. ANet promoted this feature prior to release, in sentences that emphasized how silly it was that some games force you to choose between different sets of friends. Now I’m being forced to choose between different sets of friends.

So many people have such difficulty envisaging a situation where one’s friends would be separated over several servers… do people not get how friendship circles work? Go make more friends.

The fuss some people are making over the change / lack of guessting is ridiculous, how have these people managed to cope in numerous other MMORPGs where there is no guesting, where half don’t even have free transfers and where even those that do (Rift for example), have higher liimits than the silly 24 hour one we had here.

Guess what, the majority of people don’t flit from one server to another in MMOs, it is a non-core feature that is only important for a small minority, you should count yourselves lucky there are free transfers at all, many games are paid transfers only.

I’m completely serious. The PvE in this game is pretty much mindless and makes me want to cut myself. WvW and sPvP is what matters, especially since anet wants this game to be an esport. If PvE was an esport then the bots would win.

My prediction is you’re still gonna find that on NA servers, you’ll be getting lop-sided contests. It’s not cuz people leave a server that suddenly a server can’t get more than a dozen players on a map. It’s cuz people look at the score and give up until next week.

Watch some of the match-ups. You see a server owning nothing, with basically zero combatants. The next week comes and suddenly that same server has full maps, and is taking objectives like they always could.

No I think the server transfers being locked down will greatly help the issue. If the ranking system is left for a few weeks to adjust itself without transfers mucking it up, we will see servers properly matched up against servers they can actually fight against.

The uneven matchups and players giving up was a result of a server getting a big influx of players after it won a match so the next week’s match is unfair. If they won with their current server population, that is the group of people that should be going against the 2 new servers. That would normally work out ok skill and population wise. But when you get a huge influx of new people, the other servers get overwhelmed and are essentially now matched up against a server they shouldn’t be playing against.

Then you have the building of night crews that some servers don’t have enough population for so after one server gets a bunch of extra “night crew” transfers, the servers they’re matched up against can’t compete now against the extra people and you again have a broken matchup caused by transfers.

Also the transfers eventually cause high ranked servers to be bumped down because all you have is the solo bandwagoners in WvW and the guys that got them to the top either can’t get enough of their friends in to make a difference, or just give up and leave. So those high ranked severs end up falling in rank.

Transfers just cause so many issues right now in a game mode that relies on stable populations to work. Hopefully the 7 day limit will help to curb the problems although personally I feel it’s still too short a timeframe. Make it double the amount of time a matchup lasts, that way people can’t jump ship right after their team loses onto the winning side. If servers are matched up well and people actually have a chance to beat their opponent, they will show up to fight regardless of whose currently winning.

S’posedly 2 million accounts were sold for GW2, more in EU than NA. There’s 52 worlds. That’s about 40,000 accounts per world. You can only fit 1/80th of that into WvW. I guess that less than 1% of accounts are engaged in WvW at any given time.

Having seen servers unable to get more than a dozen or so onto their maps, the actual amount can be substantially less than 1%.

Just how many people have to scurry off your server before you can’t even manage 1% participation? It’s not transfers, it’s that people give up.

An example – one week Yak’s Bend had at best 2 dozen on the maps, and lost miserably. All because of server transfers, right. Clock ticks to 5 on Friday, suddenly this transfer-plagued server filled the maps and completely pwned the opposition for an equally horrible one-sided match, only this time the sides had changed.

I know people are screaming about transfers fouling the sport, but I’m afraid it’s still gonna get us dismal matches, even after transfers are once-per-week.

What a horrible solution to a problem. How difficult is it to code a check to see when last server transfer was and simply block a player from entering WvW? Instead they decide to restrict the transfers without having a proper guesting feature.

ArenaNet has done all of this knowing they have many players who are in multiple guilds across many servers. After all, they did design GW2 to allow cross server guild membership. I have a primary guild one server and another guild that’s still getting off the ground. I like to balance my time about 50/50 between them. I embraced this because through the design and promised guesting feature ArenaNet has encouraged it. But because they don’t have guesting ready yet and WvW is suffering they are making a decision that severely impacts play styles they initially encouraged.

I can not overstate how bad this is.

Again, considering how simple it should be to just block a recently transferred player from entering WvW I think this is a very poorly thought out, haphazard solution. I think the community deserves a better answer. It’s made me loose respect for ArenaNet and faith in them as a company to always do the best thing for the community.

One only has to look at the focus of guilds as published on the guild forum sites to see an overwhelming majority spend their time in PvE. Here we see ArenaNet stealing features from PvE to give to WvW. Makes no sense considering strong alternatives exist.

Oh really? Where do you think the majority of the player base is? WvW is just a never ending loop. You go in, you join whatever fortress siege is occurring (or defend). That battle comes to its end and you move on to the next structure. You just keep doing this over and over and over again. There is no clear entry point or exist point. It is great fun the first 30-40 hours of play after that you realize how incredibly hollow of an experience it is. Then you start to think about all the ways you hope they improve it to give it some long term meaning…. It does seem ANet has plans (I assume Badges of Honor will be of more use down the road), but honestly WvW is not a lot of fun right now. It feels more like a technical preview of something than a well thought of game of substance.

Make it once a month transfer or cost 1000 gem. A server should have its own nice community. If people keep hopping around, this game will never feel like MMO to me.

Playing with friends is such a fallacious argument. You can still talk to people across servers, can still in the same guild, can still do dungeons together. The only thing you cannot do it farming DEs. If they are such “dear” friends that you have to stick with them every minute in game, well get to the same server. I hope you don’t have to cuddle with friends once every day across multiple servers.

So very wrong you are. Consider there are three components to story delivery in GW2. Dynamic Events (story of the world), Personal Story (your story, which friends can join in on) and Dungeons (general end-game play and roughly two every ten levels to tell the story of the Destiny’s Edge in story mode)

I would expect to be an active member of any guild to participate in more than just dungeons. Your generalizations reduces the entire play together experience to dungeon runs. If that is really the only place in-game to play with others then it truly is garbage isn’t it?

I think the game is quite amazing and that the guild experience is something that absolutely must be experienced beyond just dungeon runs. I would be fine if ArenaNet had said up front “you’re limited to one guild” or even “you can join multiple guilds on the same server” but they didn’t. They said

hey guys, we encourage you to join multiple guilds and we’re enabling this cross server -oh- and not to worry about being home server bound because we’re providing a guesting feature

I’ve went into the game day one with hard decisions about which guild(s) to be part of and made decisions having faith that ArenaNet would make good on their word. This action by them is the most significant failure/let down on their part IMO as it forces those of us more social players to make decisions they promised we would not have to make.

If running around in the endless loop that is WvW in it’s current state is your thing, then gosh darn kitten it I hope you have yourself a swell time after this goes in tomorrow. Still disappointed and in disbelief that this is ArenaNet’s solution to a this very simple problem.

I have never needed to change servers at all,and never will.

In most MMOs you are bound and a guesting is not free (if offered at all), but GW2 has never positioned itself in that way. They made clear up front that guesting would be a big deal and encouraged players to join multiple guilds enabling cross server guilds and sold all this as a innovative feature.

I am aware of that droves of players from WoW and many other titles came into GW2 and have ignored this aspect of the game, but many of us have embraced it. Now we have to be punished, hurt feelings of others and make decisions we were told we wouldn’t have to because ArenaNet’s programmers can’t figure out how to lock a player who just performed a server transfer out of WvW for seven days.

It should work the other way around. If WvW means that much to you then you shouldn’t be doing server transfers. This whole lock-down is to deal with a WvW issue yet they are punishing those of us who are just using the cross-server guild feature and have been doing multiple transfers a week just to play with our various guild members.

Ready to uninstall. I don’t like being lied to and I don’t like feature restrictions that just don’t make sense when alternative paths to solving the problem seem easy enough. It’s very easy to store a value in a database table to timestamp when the player transferred to the server and only let them enter WvW after a certain interval as passed. A fifteen year old who’s read a few books on the C++ programming language could probably add this feature in less than a week.

Any response ArenaNet? Why have you done this?

I am one of those people who has friends on multiple servers.
An example my real life friend’s who I like to do Daily quests and rp events are housed on Tarnished coast. The guild I am part of to do WVW, pvp ,and Dungeons is on Sanctum of Rall.

This change does affect my ability to play with my friends who prefer to stay on the Tarnished coast server. Now I will say this change was needed to assist wvw which affects every server and am willing to wait for guesting to be fixed but to say this change does not affect everyone is an Incorrect assumption.

Now it may have been shortsighted of me to set things up this way but I am not alone in this and so i can only hope the guesting feature gets corrected soon.

Please don’t do this. Without guesting, the only way I can play with all of my friends and guildies is to alternate servers. Limiting world transfers to daily was painful enough, this is excruciating. If the problem is WvW, then lock people out of it for a week after transferring. Don’t punish all us social PvE players for the actions of some of the WvW people.

Please, delay this at least until you get guesting. If I wanted to NOT play with my friends, I would just go play Skyrim or something.

To all the people who are saying that limiting server transfers to 1 per 7 days is going to ruin their game, I would like to point out that having people able to transfer every day (and even more often on release) was ruining the game for people like me, who play this game primarily for WvW.

Guesting will be up and running as soon as possible and all will be right with the world again. Please understand that this news is great for us pvpers who one week have a good pvp team, go up a teir and then large amounts of people leave to go to which ever server has a head start.

In fairness to your argument, I feel that what they should have done is left the transfers to 1 per day but made it so you couldn’t enter WvW on your new server for a week after transferring. This would be a solution that I think would please everybody.

Sadly, server transfers are are only a tiny problem for WvW as a whole. It needs a lot of work in general to providing any compelling reason to continue playing long term.

What am I missing here?

You are missing the fact that by not being able to change servers for 1 week, it makes playing with friends on different servers very unpleasant. I really thought that Anet learned its lesson from GW1 about seperating PVE from PVP.

Why couldn’t they have implemented a system where if you have played WvW recently, there would be a cooling off time before you could change servers?

Why not allow server changes every 24 hours only to players that have not done WvW recently?

Instead, the rest of us are punished and have to wait a week to change servers.

Unless Anet figures out a way to make both crowds happy, this game is going to spiral downward into the mess that GW1 was in with the PVE vs PVP people.

Truthfully, neither group should get short changed, Anet should come up with a solution to appease both groups.

More pve maps than pvp mean that most of the content is PVE and therefore Its a PVE game. Just becasue you don’t like the PVE or the combat style does’nt mean everyone esle does’nt like it either.

No actually there are NO MMO’s about at the moment that do PVE better. All most all of them are just a long boring gear grind and I’m SO tired of doing that Its BECASUE of the lack of the trinity, raiding and gear grind that makes this game SO good. I don’t need to wait for hours for a tank or a healer to join the party so we can do something. Even just 2 people can go do stuff. I’ve not tried the dungeons so I can’t comment on them. I’ve never been a raider so I probley won’t either. But theres a lot more to do than dungeons.

One of the key features Anet promoted was that you can play with your friends no matter what server they where on, just like in GW1. With haveing to wait a week between transfers this really is’nt possable. If guesting was in place I would’nt care if you could never change servers. But since it is’nt I do. GW2 is a wvw game because no other game can successfully offer that style of play (GW2 sold more than all of those other games combined, let’s see if it can keep it up).

But WvW still isn’t a big part of the game. It’s sPvP that might get eSport status to the game. And most players aren’t in WvW.

S’posedly 2 million accounts were sold for GW2. There’s 52 worlds. That’s about 40,000 accounts per world. You can only fit 1/80th of that into WvW. So less than 1% of accounts are engaged in WvW at any given time.

and PVE has 31 (25 world maps + the 6 towns) So PVE has over 4 times as many maps as pvp and wvw put together. GW2 is a PVE game even anet has said so.

First, you are simply being dishonest about the number of maps. Each of the border land map may be similar, but there are differences in each of the border land maps. They are not exactly the same. Even so, it is utterly disingenuous to suggest that because they are similar they are not different maps. As an IoJ player, I start in the IoJ Citadel on the IoJ border land map. Without hacking, I cannot even get into the Citadels on the other two border maps. And you start in different positions on every map depending on the server you are on and even the color of your team for the week. This makes each map a different experience. There are four WvW maps and suggesting that there are only two is simply dishonest.

Either way, the number of maps a game has of each type does not define the focus of the game. PvP does not need the same number of maps because PvE maps are largely level dependent. A level 1 -15 zone cannot accommodate leveling for both level 1 – 15 players and level 60 – 70 players. You, therefore, have to have different maps for different level players in PvE. PvE maps are also largely static. If you go through the area different times, you will always find the same mobs basically in the same places. Thus, on top of needing different maps for different levels, you have to have different maps to have different mobs so that people don’t get bored. That is, the very nature of PvE requires a large number of maps.

By contrast, this game auto levels everyone to level 80 whether on a sPvP or WvW map. Thus, you automatically eliminate the need for additional maps because of level differences. Likewise, PvP maps are anything but static, even when one server dominates a game. Last week, IoJ dominated the match, and I was able to take my level 23ish character through to get all the map completions in WvW. This week, SoS is dominating the map, and it is dangerous to even stop outside the starting point. DoH has not really been much of a factor in this matchup, but normally even in a dominated game, you will find different keeps/towers/camps under different server control with different levels of defense throughout the week. There is a termendous variability to each WvW map from moment to moment, meaning you don’t need dozens of maps to make up for the lack of variability found in an individual PvE map.

It is utter nonsense to suggest that the number of maps devoted to a particular style of play determines the type of game this is. PvE, by its very nature, requires more maps, so the fact that there are more PvE maps is meaningless.

Finally, I don’t know what ANet quote you are taking out of context, but this game, like GW before it, is designed as a PvP game with PvE components. It is not like other MMOs which are generally PvE games with PvP almost force fit over PvE mechanics as an afterthought. Knowing this is one of the reasons it took me until the very night of (early) release to decide I was going to even play it because I am primarily a PvE player. They may have characterized GW2 as a game in which you can play PvE and not bother with PvP at all, which is true, but to suggest that this is somehow a “PvE game” as if PvP were not the primary focus of the game is simply wrong.

Regarding this bit about GW2 is a WvW focused game or GW2 is a PvE focused game, etc… The game in its current state is most certainly PvE focused. Go to one of the GW2 guild registar sites and browse all guilds. On almost all of the servers you will find heavy focus on PvE with WvW being a side-line item and not exclusive.

While it’s true WvW is one of the most compelling form of end-game content (it sure isn’t dungeons and sPvP, [snicker]) the reality is WvW still has a very long way to go before it becomes entertaining and challenging to those who enjoy strategic team play. In it’s current state it feels like an endless loop of defending and capturing structures. Very long durations between resets and not enough satisfactory rewards between those resets. It is the part of the game that has the most potential, but it also feels like it needs to most development.

Stabbing the PvE crowd in the back to produce a fix for a problem with a part of the game [WvW] that still needs so much effort all around doesn’t make sense to me.

If they are actually proud of all the mechanics in WvW right now and don’t see any room for improvement then that is very sad. I’d like to play it more often, but it needs to be a lot less formulamatic and require a lot of strategic play. As with many other aspects of the game a win-scenario can be had with a zerg rush and that turns any game (yes, even this one) to garbage pretty fast. Fortunately it can be fixed and the underpinning work that went into WvW is overwhelmingly good.

The bottom line with GW2 is the game shipped way too early and many aspects of it continue to feel unfinished. This whole server transfer lock-down without guesting is very unpleasant. Hopefully the guesting option will arrive sometime in November so this will be a short lived annoyance.

Would’nt let post this with the qouted post in as it said it was to long so I had to leave it out

I’m not being dishonest in the least about the number of wvw maps as the starter areas HAVE to be the same or one server would have an advantage over another if they where not the same. Even if we do count all 4 which we should’nt, PVE maps still out number pvp by over three to one.

Have you played the pve side of this game AT ALL? I don’t think so as other wise you would that that both a lvl 2 player and a lvl 67 player can BOTH lvl in a 1-15 area. Due to downscaleing. I can even earn xp and loot there as a lvl 80 So this BS about how PVE requires a large number of maps to just lvl is plain wrong. As if futher proof was needed you clerarly have’nt a clue about the pve world. You say its static and pvp is’nt when it fact its the total oppersite. pvp maps will NEVER change unless altered by the devs. Where as pve change all the time due to the dynamic events.

As to your statement that amount of pve/pvp content in a game determins what type it is. Of course it does. Just like if the vast majority of the player base does one type of content more than another. The company will favor that type of content. Like Anet did in GW1. Sure it was originaly designed to be a pvp game with pve just to lvl. BUT Anet found the PVE content was VASTLY more popular than the pvp so like any good business would they devloped more content for the PVE players. The expansions got more and more pve based as time went on. Please tell me about the NEW pvp content in Nightfall or ETON.

Have you watched the MMO manifesto video ? Because I have many times, and I did’nt hear a SINGLE mention of pvp in the entire video. It was ALL PVE. Its late and I don’t have time to find any quotes. But they mention several times that GW2 will be more PVE focused than pvp. Which is not suppriseing as thier are MANY more pve players than there are pvp. So it only makes sense to cater to a larger player base then a smaller one. Anyone who thinks GW2 is a PVP focused game is clearly delusional.

Was a curious thing that in the Nov 1 live interview with Colin J, he reiterated the same line from pre-launch, that “being able to play with your friends wherever you want”

GW2 isn’t a real pvp game, but it is trying to get into the esport world. We’ll see if it can pull it off. I think that’s why spvp and wvw are portrayed as little mini-games not attached to Tyria, to keep it more sport-like. For me, on the one hand, I have fond memories of true pvp in the world. On the other hand, I know those types of games don’t have broad appeal to the US gamer market (related to the not-so-fond memories I also have re true pvp)

1 per 7 still lets people hop with every WvW reset, so that wouldn’t fix anything.

1 per 15 would cut down on the bandwagoning and cheese that’s unbalancing every WvW matchup for my server.

Making transfers cost gems or something might slow it down a little.

Guesting? How about pick one server and stick with it. There’s no good reason for people to be hopping all over the place, especially in a game with server-based PvP.

@Voqar Guesting is a feature that was heavily promoted in the advertising, was supposed to be in at launch, but of course isn’t working yet. Play with your friends anywhere was as much a catch-phrase as When it’s ready™ It’s a big component into why names are unique to the player across the whole world, for example.

Guesting IS fundamental to the pick-one-server philosophy for WvW. It’s what will let us play with your friends anywhere while not server-hopping to do it.

Well me and a few other people were just screwed over by this change and Anet’s inability to add guesting.

Thanks Anet. Your poor service and bugs are blocking me from playing your game.

I do a lot of PVE and don’t understand how this “punishes PVErs.” I’ve never had to leave my server at all.

Bingo.

But then again I don’t live in self entitlement land!

You can’t always have your cake and eat it too.

This “punishing PVE players” thing is confusing me a bit..

I guess I’m doing something wrong then because I have never changed server or felt the need to.

What am I missing here?

You just got lucky that all of your friends were able to get on the same server. Many of us aren’t as lucky.

It should be twice every 7 days. With guesting ‘on’; that sounds more reasonable.

Chillax people. This is a compromise that we get to deal with while ArenaNet works out the systems they had planned. Guesting was advertised, but isn’t yet implemented. WvW lockouts were advertised for transfers, but are not yet implemented. Paid transfers were advertised, but again, are net yet implemented.

Obviously the developers wanted these systems in place, but have ran into some difficulty and so this is what we get. Now, people who frequently transfer have to prioritize and make a decision. Consider this: you can still do dungeons, sPvP, and communicate with guilds cross server, but now you can only farm Dynamic Events, mobs, and resource nodes on different servers once per week.

Free, daily transfers were never meant to be permanent. Neither are these free, once-per-week transfers. Feedback is good, just please keep it constructive and try to limit your hyperbole.

Too much WvW (and early on, T6 gathering node) abuse/exploitation. It should of been 7 days from the very beginning – or at least NOT FREE.

I have friends in NA who play on NA servers because that’s where the community are awake for them. I have friends in the UK who are playing on EU servers because that’s where the community are awake for them. Neither are going to move away from most of their friends for the sake of one.

ANet said there would be a guesting system, and there isn’t. They turned on free transfers because guesting wasn’t ready, and they wanted to make good on their promise. Then they limited it to the point where it no longer makes up for the lack of guesting, before guesting was ready.

So, I cannot play with half of my friends and the only ‘solution’ people offer is to tell my friends in one country to move server as if it’s a piece of cake (if it was, there would be no need for a guesting system at all).

And some people tout other MMOs that shard their communities like that’s a benchmark of acceptability that I have to embrace. I don’t. And I don’t play those games.

And then people saying I have a sense of entitlement… hi? The transfers became free because ANet wanted to let people in my situation play with my friends. The got me as a customer because they offered this, among many other innovations, that other games don’t. How is a sense of entitlement to this feature wrong when they offered it to me?

Someone refute my logic. If you’re just going to bleat unfounded accusations that I’m some sort of farmer, stow it – that point’s been made. If you have evidence that I’m exploiting a feature to the disadvantage of other players, report me.
