I’m in a bit of an unfortunate situation. My account is on the Gandara server, which it wouldn’t have mattered if 90% of my guild members weren’t on Desolation. I know that now there are Megaservers and smaller servers don’t matter anymore, but they still play an important role in WvW. I want to get more into WvW, but it isn’t as compelling when you’re going in solo instead of with a small group of your guildies, and it gets stale pretty quick. Not to mention that you’re spending half the time wondering around like a headless chicken trying to find stuff to do in order to increase your participation and the reward track points that you get every 5 min.
Unfortunately, server transfer is pretty expensive. You pay 2000 gems just so that you can be on the same map with someone, that’s it. It’s not like buying an outfit, a toy or a character or bank slot that makes you instantly feel better after purchase. I also do not have the money to pay an expansion-worth of real money for a rather small piece of content. And as a person who is only a quarter into making his first legendary it’s hard to gather that much gold, especially due to time constraints.

Thus being said, will server transfer be on sale anytime soon?

Desolation is classified as a “Full” server. So you can’t transfer into it even if you did buy a server transfer. You have to wait until it’s WvW population falls.

How about if you make a free account on one of the linked servers to the Desolation and get a char to level 60 so you can play WvW on it.

That may not work. Desolation is the 2nd ranked EU server. AFAIK the top 2 or 3 servers are rarely linked with another server.

I don’t think ANet has ever offered a “sale price” for transfers. (Notable exception: transfers were free at launch, as a substitute for guesting, which wasn’t available yet.)

If ANet does change transfer costs, I think it’s more likely that they’d increase the cost to move to High Population worlds to encourage people to look elsewhere first.

tl;dr don’t wait for a sale to move. Start converting whatever you can afford today and convert whenever you can set aside another chunk of change.

For reference: anything below 100g for 400 gems (25g/100) is relatively low for the last 5-10 months. 92g for 400 gems (23g/100) is about as low as I’ve seen it get for more than an hour or two.

Unless it has changed, the highest cost to transfer is 1800 Gems. Server population is solely based on WvW, and one can not transfer to a Full Server. Some Servers rarely move from Full status.

I don’t believe one can choose which Server one is placed on with a Play4Free account, so I’m not sure that would be a solution (which is why one is given 1 free transfer when upgrading a P4F account to a paid account).
