I am brand new to GW2 (joined yesterday) and as soon as I saw the servers I got overwhelmed, I need to know if my choice of server will affect my gameplay or friends in any way, will I be able to play with my friends on an oceanic server if I’m on Dragonbrand? (NA server) I need some info because most of my friends play on Oceanic servers and I live in NA so I can’t play on those servers… Can I?

Servers only effect WvW. So if you don’t intend on doing that. (It’s a huge massive PvP base capture defense thing) It doesn’t matter which server you pick, you can still play every other part of the game with people from every server in NA. There are no Oceanic servers. my guild is Oceanic. Most of my guild is from Aussie and NZ.

Well currently the thing that really matters is if you play on American or European servers. Other than that, it’s pretty much the same as all servers merge together into one giant megaserver. Unless you’re interested in joining your friends in WvW(which is like a massive player vs player combat that includes capping points), pick whatever server you wish. At least that’s what I know. Perhaps someone knows a bit more.

You can still visit/spend time with your friends no matter what server you choose. Outside of WvW that is.

There are no Oceanic servers. Only NA and EU. You should check to see if your friends are on an NA or EU server. For example you can’t play with people on an EU server if you are on a NA server.

Oh ok, most of my friends are on Fissure of Woe so that means I can’t play with them unless I choose a EU server? (Thanks for correction btw)

Not at this time. Megasevers are either EU or NA. I don’t think Anet has any plans to merge EU and NA. But that is probably for the best right now.

Dang it -_- that means I can only friend them and pst chat with them unless I’m on their server?

Well you could join their EU server and play with them. I’m not sure what kind of issues you might have with connection though. Perhaps someone around here in NA that plays on an EU server can shed more light on this.

-_- now I wish I didn’t have friends that lived in EU…

I’m in NA and have one EU account and one NA account. I very rarely have game play issues on either one. It’s even sometimes less laggy on my NA account than on my EU account, so I wouldn’t worry about connection issues. The biggest difference is time of day NA and EU are most active.

You don’t need 2 accounts. You can still join an EU server if you want.

Oh neato that makes me happy

Since you started yesterday and if don’t want to pay for the transfer, you can simply bank all your items and delete your character. This way you can transfer for free for any server of your choice, being NA or EU.

Oh I haven’t even chosen my server yet XD so I don have nothing to transfer…

Just keep on mind if you want to play WvW with your friends you need to be on the exact same server.
