First off ~ Free transfers need to end now. The longer transfers are in operation the harder it’ll become to re-balance the game in the near future, its no secret GW2 has lost a very significant amount of players since launch and many servers are seriously hurting for players, in both PvE and PvP – and with free transfers in-effect many guilds are just jumping ship now which is making some servers suffer even more with very low populations.
PvE
Many (Group Events) obviously need a decent amount of players, especially events in Orr which require very significant amount of players, alot of servers now just don’t have the numbers to successfully complete these events which prevents progression which leads to more people leaving the server. Lets not even talk about dungeons!
W3
Population is really the key to winning, sure tactics play a part but really it boils down to sheer numbers – the top tier servers have 24/7 full W3, and the bottom tier servers have outmanned buffs almost constantly, Anet don’t you see this as a problem?
Whats going to happen when 80%+ of players transfer off dead servers and only bots remain? This is already happening, and honestly anet/developers you need to start fixing this problem now, instead of worrying about content to keep the remaining players happy, that can come once you have fixed the hole you’ve been digging for yourself.
I think what needs to happen is maybe the bottom six servers need to be condensed into 3 creating a new tier, also free transfers needs to end, discuss?
Guesting will make server mergers irrelevant. They need to hurry up and get the guesting function up and running and end free transfers.
TsukasaHiiragi.9730, at the time of your posting there were 12 NA servers that are listed as full and 12 listed as High for population.
The time of your posting was ~3pm Eastern time. This isn’t even prime time.
I don’t know how it ‘feels’ to be on a ‘high’ population server at this hour since I didn’t log in and the server I would be playing on is listed as ‘full’ so I can’t speak to that. Perhaps high population really isn’t that many players on at the same time so maybe the lowest population servers could benefit from merging but it seems to me that Guild Wars 2 continues to have a steady influx of new players which are replacing the dormant players. It -seems- to me that the lowest population servers used to have medium populations at around this hour and now have high populations but that may be mis-remembering on my part.
Anyway, I think your post would do better in the World versus World discussion forum since it is primarily directed towards WvWvW.

No it won’t, guests can’t participate in WvW, if you want to be a guest in a server then you need to have a friend contact on that server, but then all that does is make that server higher pop, your own server is still empty, if you are guesting because your server is so low pop, then you may as well move server, guesting solves nothing.

But what does “full” and “high” population even mean? Other games (Star Wars Galaxies) have listed servers as such and were ghost towns. Combine that with the irritatingly high number of bots which are being counted; “full” and “high” both carry very little weight.

Take ‘high population’ with a grain of salt ~ like Lolnotacat said..all the servers are ‘high’ yet most low teir servers are ghost towns, my server Emhry bay is a ghost town – besides the Halloween event, I haven’t seen the overflow server in over a month and many other servers are in the same situation.
Server guesting, is really only a bandaid fix to the problem – its not going to magically solve it. Anet can easily merge some servers together without messing up the W3 teirs, everybody wins.

Just because they say that doesnt mean it is so.I transferred off a full pop to a low "high"pop server and I had trouble running plinx. The man everyone farms. We lose Pen and shelter all the time.
So just because it says it is High server doesnt mean that the pop is full – no sir it means that there is a pop issue there.
Anet needs to get on this fast because this is one thing that kills communities and servers.I dont know what the #’s of concurrency are but I can say anecdotally my friends dont play this anymore and my first guild died. We are droping pop and need things shored up.
None of them came back for Halloween either so I doubt they will ever return.

I agree, Narkosy. Halloween boosted the server pops briefly, then after the event ended, back to ghost towns. I’m honestly, struggling to keep our guild afloat – between people quitting the game, non-representing members and very little in the way of new members joining its becoming a major problem.
Several large guilds on our server have already transferred off in the past week. If it wasn’t for the fact our guild has guild upgrades IV/III/IV/V pretty sure our guild would have moved off as well, but since we’re a casual guild, we don’t want to lose all that influence.
