The current company policy of continually releasing hundreds of gemstore skins while not producing the skins that people who purchased HoT are owed is at best disrespectful and at worse criminal.

I propose that resources be shifted away from the gemstore and towards the production of the items that were promised to be delivered with our $50 purchase of HoT.

At current count over a 120 weapon skins have been released in the gem store since the launch of HoT while only 3 of the promised 16 legendary weapons have been released.

they don’t care, its a bait and switch… and we’ve all been had. I’m not against the gem store in principle, but the plethora of garbage released there on a daily basis is borderline sickening, and an insult to the majority of us who feel we haven’t gotten our money’s worth post HoT release.

Adding content to the game is feeding the cow. The gemshop is milking the cow. The milk is going to dry up if you don’t feed the cow enough, no matter how hard you try to milk it.

The gemshop does not bring in and retain players, that’s is what adding (and not removing) content to the game is for. There’s no marginal cost to gemshop sales either, so one would think that trying to bring in and retain more players would be far better than putting so much effort into the gemshop. The gemshop feels scummy enough, without it coming across as the highest priority aspect of the game.

Well, they need to make money somehow. It’s just that for “some reason”, things that I or many people don’t care for goes on sale. My plastic stays in my wallet.

The way Anet will extinguish this flame will be a test to see if they can keep GW2 alive in the future. They are at a crossroad right now.
If they choose the wrong path, it will burn the entire mountain down.

Gemstore skins are what fund the company and asking them to stop making them is akin to asking a subscription mmo to stop charging subscriptions.

If we had an official apology with some sort of make good like free gems or black lion chest keys or ANYTHING from these devs I would be more forgiving and gracious. When company’s don’t deliver on their promise, it is their duty to make it right by their customers… nothing has been made right by us and we’ve been just given lip service over and over and over again. I commend MO for actually breaking the news but the way the whole thing was worded and no make good to the playerbase whatsoever is insulting.

The bubble glider was coming as promised. They said they’d give us a new glider each Tuesday in March. Should they have suspended that promised content as well?

Yes I want more in-game stuff and less wallet-sucking stuff. But the bubble glider is a terrible rallying point for the torches and pitchforks contingent since their main complaint is having promised content canceled.

Gemstore goodies (or subscriptions) are useless there are not enough people around to spend money on them.

The fact that the gemshop is so central in people’s minds for “what would get people’s good will back” is very telling on how overused it is.

But what would we do without the 1 piece outfits they can barf out faster then i can eyeroll? Make our own looks? Having more armor skins to mix and match in the 50 bucks expansion? Do you really consider this madness? Arent those 3 sets per weight and 4 for heavy enough? And weapon skins? You dont really want to suggest that they make em faster then you can blink. Come on man… its just 120… pitifull amount… pfff naaahhh. Gliders? Yeh.. we wont be needing those in the map metas as rewards… screw that, too much effort, just buy the exalted one and done, nice huh? Raid ghost glider? Yeh.. screw that noise. Outfit bundle! Not raid drop! YAY! Also buy the sabetha mini while you are at it! DO EEET!

Also legendaries? Dont you have enough with 1 set of them? So greedy… so selfish… man you really need to back down from your high horse. Could it be that you read the “released at regular intervals” thingy from the expansion page? How about you learn to read proper man…geez… it obviosly means “have 3….and later a 4th and then screw yourselfes”…people these days. Its almost like you bought something and want your money´s worth of it….but that would be madness.

I am cutting MO some slack on this. Why? He’s clearly not a people person. As someone a bit socially awkward and uncommunicative myself, with a super nice mom who is nigh-autistic in her ability to read people so she comes off as rude at times, I have a lot of empathy for those who lack charisma. We’ve been spoiled by Colin’s easy way with words and smiles; MO (and most people whose job is to create games, not to motivate the masses) pales in comparison. In his HoT announcement at PAX South, I was cringing with every “nnnyyeeeeeessss!” he uttered because I knew what he was trying to convey compared to how it was coming out

So I’m willing to ignore his presentation style so long as his actions bear out his good intentions. He’s not a PR guy, he’s a designer and CEO. Blunt but honest, and making good on what he says, that’ll make all the difference for me.

Gemstore was what USED to fund the game before they decided to fund it by selling at $50 expansion. They are required to provide the content they sold to us by any means necessary. They made the decision to shift away from the gemstore when they started focusing on making us pay for content instead. They now need to provide that content.

I’m fairly confident that the money spent in the gemstore goes to anet, but maybe your right and the money goes to a different company.

Last I heard a large portion of it was going to keep Wildstar afloat, not sure if that has changed recently or not after HoT’s poor performance.

The cash shop funds the monthly cash flow needs of ANet. The expansion provides a spike of cash for the rainy day fund. They didn’t switch from cash shop to the expansion as their primary income source. And if we go back a few years the original cost of the game paid back 5 years of NCSOFT funding GW2’s development which looking at the audit reports I estimate to be in the $50-70 million dollar range. Now it probably paid it off rather quickly but it wasn’t long after that NCSOFT decided to package up all their NA studios and operations into the holding company which now hides ANet’s annual numbers since they are co-mingled with Carbine and the support teams for AION, L2 in NA and BnS localization costs.

You may as well ask for a million dollars and shares in the company. I mean if you’re asking for impossible things, go hog wild.

I honestly don’t mind them to continue working on gemstore items. I like what comes out usually even if I don’t buy everything. I also feel it’s necessary for the health of the game that they are able to sell things in the gemstore.

I still want them to continue work on the rest of the legendaries, but I don’t think taking away the gamestore stuff is the way to go about it.

  1. “Legendary” weapons are a lot harder to design and implement than an entire set of weapons, without even considering the collection process (with 30-50 steps per precursor). Legendaries also require building 3 additional skins.
  2. The gem shop is a profit center; the legendary team is a cost center.

Shifting resources from the gem shop would ultimately reduce what we see by a noticeable amount, while speeding up the release of legendary gear by a hard-to-see amount.

If you ever looked at a set, it’s almost LEGO like with similar parts and effects across the set, as well as cloning parts from previously released weapons. A legendary needs to look the part. It has to be over the top.

They are spending resources on their gemstore when their core game is losing players and needs work done to it.

They need to slow down on the gem store and get more people working on actual game content to keep people playing long enough to invest money into the game.

Gem store is fine and all but not at a crucial time as this where old players are leaving because of various reasons and new players are having to go though areas that are not as full as they used to be.

I’m not sure the ‘core’ game’s content is being held up because of some art assets. If you think the people creating art for Gemstore products are versed in other parts of the game, you might be disappointed. It’s not like they have to create anything but skins for items already designed.

On the other hand, losing a major part of the game’s monthly income right now might cause the company to consider letting employees go. Which, again, wouldn’t cause core game content to be produced any faster.

Food for thought….

I’m as sure as I can be that it’s not, short of visiting ANet HQ and learning the details of how they are organized. If only ANet’s immediate issues were that simple, any junior developer could have solved them before we heard about it.
