Shorten Emote Range?
I believe shortening to range of /e, /me and emotes will relieve 90% of the issues when it comes to rping. Right now, the range is two inches of the map and that is just ridiculously huge. If I was standing near the bank in Divinity’s Reach, why would I want to read someone drinking at the Busted Flagon?
It would also stop a lot of the apparent frustration non-rpers feel when all they want to do is buy/sell/sort out groups for pvp/wvw or whatever they do, and get “spammed” with blocks of emote text. This would almost make it so they don’t feel as though they have to troll the rpers in anyway.
In my eyes, this is a win-win situation. Dial back /e, /me and emotes to say range. It will lessen spam on maps and make rpers and non-rpers happier.
Hello,
Casual RPer here too, and would also like to see emote range shortened if possible.
However, it used to be shorter than it was, so I doubt it’ll be reverted, so what I do is I have my chat split into 5 different tabs, and only have emotes on certain ones. That way, when I’m not RPing, I can’t see the emotes unless I want to. Same with other types of chat (please find the image as an example of how I separate different types of chat)
I also don’t believe that emotes can be regarded any more spam than actual chat when it comes to RP. If someone is doing /em dance over and over again, maybe. But I don’t think it’s spam if it’s via RP and the emotes are like:
/em walks over to the bar and patiently taps the bar with a coin.
/em looks at the bartender with a friendly smile, politely ordering a Firewater Whiskey.
/em takes the glass, nodding to the barkeep whilst sliding over 20 copper.
This is not spam in my eyes because they are done over a period of time instead of repeatedly. It’s basically chatting with a different text colour at the end of the day.
But yes, it still would be great to see the range of emotes pulled back a bit.
Yes, I could have tabs and non-rpers do need to learn to turn emotes off if it kittenes them off that much, but 2 inches is just too high of a range. For example, that is practically the whole Grove map. If you want to rp there, you usually can’t because there are already 2-3 rps happening there and I don’t want to block other rpers just so I can do a scene.
I’d love to see this too, as an avid WvW player every once and a while there is some kitten who emote spams on the enemy side so when they invade you can’t read chat because it’s filled with stupid emotes.
I’m a relatively avid RP type in Guild Wars, and it can be a bit difficult to find good, quiet places to act out scenes without overlapping or bothering anyone that might be halfway across the map at any given time. I’ve been considering whether there may be a way to drastically shorten the range of graytext, emotes both set and custom, to within the range that anything in /say might travel.
It’ll also cut down on emote spam such as sit, sleep, dance, and the rest that might be frustrating to both RPers and regulars that don’t like to turn off emotes or don’t really want to, but are also holding conversations in their guild, party, or /say that are drowned out via emote spam.
I’m sure it’d cut down game-wide frustrations, unless this has already been proposed.
You can turn everything and anything off in the chat window options.

That point’s a tad moot when I and others are using the same chat medium to communicate. I /do/ know this.
