Should ANet change the Floppy Fish?
Second, no one is on a high horse. People are simply expressing their opinion.
Yes, and from what I have gathered people asking for the Floppy Fish to change are calling those wanting it to remain the same some manner of a Sadist.
It’s a ludicrous position to take, we’re talking about fish that doesn’t exist in the real world, of which is advertised as something magically abnormal and somehow at this late in the game they perceive it as ‘shocking’.
How much violence do you think is in this game? When you kill a Charr NPC with a fire-based attack, the death animation has the charr screaming as if it is being burned alive, flailing its arms trying to put out the flames. We also go kill Zombie enemies, with all the grotesque innards and limbs out in full view, some zombies don’t have eyes!
I am not saying they don’t have a right to an opinion, but given all the other things in this game that they haven’t spoken up about, the opinion that somehow a Floppy Fish is shocking and needs to be changed is outright disingenuous. I take into question the sincerity of the OP’s request. I am willing to be the OP is trolling everyone and managed to get some actual people who care about fish made of pixels.
Many people actually care about what happens in GW2. I see posts of people getting upset about certain stories, or angry, or sad. The pixels represent something, like any image. Of course it isn’t representing a real fish, but what I’m saying is that I don’t prefer to have any kind of image of a dying animal frequently or constantly around as a “fun” or “humorous” thing. Obviously this is just my opinion, but I don’t understand people who object to me stating it.
Can I ask you to explain why it’s ok for minipets to be beheaded and suffering but this
magical fish can’t flap around on the ground after you?

lol this isn’t worth a real reply
I main an ele but playeth all the things

The only pet I know of that is “beheaded” is the wurm. If you read the entire thread you would see that I only found out that the wurm pet is a severed wurm head in this very thread. I never zoomed in on one to see the details, but I don’t enjoy that either.
He doesn’t look like he’s suffering. In fact, if anything, I think it needs to look a little more exasperated while not moving, and the movements need to have little splashes of water.
I mean, we still have plant elf people. Who we shouldn’t. We should first deal with that filth that was been allowed to stand on Tyrian soil for this long. Then we can return to our massive fish torture because we are jerkfish.
But seriously, it’s an animated fish. Don’t like it, don’t spend your money/gold on it. Don’t like other people having it. Tough. Maybe ANet should implement a “Hide minis” option instead so we don’t have to listen to the whiners over a regular old animated fish.

But if you’re offended/sickened by this but not the flopping severed wurm head mini, isn’t that racist on wurms? I’d say the wurm is in a MUCH worse state, but he gets no love? Why because it’s a fantasy/animated creature like the fish..? Oh wait…

Why do you play such a violent game if these bother you so much? You commit Genocide in this game for the sake of a few MATS, randomly murdering things just because they got in your way, slaying mythical creatures left, right and centre.

Here’s my opinion after watching the video…the floppy fish is NOT gasping for air…it’s actually “gasping” for water…fish breath through their gills and the gills need water to absorb oxygen from…so no big deal, it swims in the water and flops on land. It probably wasn’t meant to be brought out while on land but needed an animation for those that would. Not a big deal, it’s a toy.
The Cattlepult, which has been killing cows since the game released, has not seen any attention, nor has the kicking of chickens in Bitterfrost Frontier for feathers and a title, but a magical fish is too far?
This whole thread is full of hypocrisy, and precisely why the fish shouldn’t be changed. You slaughter creatures ingame for you own gain.

To all the people complaining about the cruelty with the fish how about when you launch a god kitten cow from a treb in wvw ? call peta level cruelty right there ! #triggered
OK, this topic was way too fun to read through not to comment as well.
While i understand that feelings about not wanting to see an animal suffer there are a few things to remember:
a) this is a game
b) this is a game where you:
i) launch cows from a treb
ii) launch cows from a Cattle-pault (Diessa)
iii) at some point have killed countless frogs, insects, moa, more cows, dogs, coyote, etc, etc etc in the pursuit of either leveling or staying alive
c) killed other sentient beings that have shown themselves to be nuanced (skritt, ogres)
d) killed others of playable races
e) had something to eat at Meatober Fest
Now thats just a short list, but I’m sure you get the picture. There is literally no lack of “animal cruelty” in the game and we can all cope with this (I’d hope) because we know that this is a game.
As for the suffering of said animal: it never dies. Its an immortal fish. More akin to a mudskipper in fact, just flopping along on land until it gets into water with you. And if you are having a hard time believing that it is immortal, just remember that you are playing in a game where you can fight dragons and drop flaming rocks on their heads with your mind.

But having a dying fish just hanging around constantly as a “fun” animation is different from encounters while actually playing.

Yes, a “toy” that is an eternally suffering fish. Yay.
Its not. A. Dying. Fish. It is literally immortal and has no legs so has to flop to you to move around on land.
Now if there was a definitive “death” animation, I’d be more apt to say yes, that’s just cruel. But that’s not how it works.

It is the animation that a fish makes when it is dying. The fact that a group of pixels can’t die doesn’t mean that it can’t be programmed to look like it is, which this one has been.
I’m glad you are able to look at it as a fish flopping to move around. I unfortunately just see a dying fish.

A large part of why it is an issue now is simply because it was noticed now. People who like the fish, and who don’t like the fish, are just … people. Things might not be noticed, or they might not.
It’s also the case that the “anti-anti-fish” reactions will have contributed to it being such a thing. In addition to drawing attention to the situation, they also encourage people to try and advocate for their position. Which, being human on both sides, some folks do much less well than others, generating more heat, and more fighting, and encouraging the same thing.
Why the wurm didn’t generate this … honestly? My best guess is the same reason that people get all upset at the idea of eating cute little puppies and kittens, but not so much at the idea of eating lambies and cows — a combination of familiarity, and “how cute / relatable is it to me”.
(…and the chicken in a tornado is not showing, to my eye, any real evidence of suffering, which is what makes the difference for me. if it was constantly screaming or panicking, I’d be much less happy about it. also, uh, I don’t really see them around much, and if i have that mini unlocked I sure don’t use it…)
(Alternately … was it a featured item in the gemstore? If not, perhaps it simply didn’t have the visibility for the people who were uncomfortable to feel like it was worth speaking up.)
Finally, to the broader question you asked about genocide for materials, etc… I can’t speak for everyone on their personal reasons why they draw the line where they do, but I can assure you that what it comes down to is that each person draws their own line about what degree of simulated violence they feel comfortable with, and what they don’t.
For me, the relatively bloodless and painless animations of the fictional enemies are sufficiently mild that while I wish for less bloody ways to solve some problems, I can enjoy the overall experience.
The fish, on the other hand, is too much in the path of suffering. I’d feel the same way, and probably not be here answering your question, if we had more “realistic” and/or painful looking deaths of the average critter or enemy going on.
It’s also important to remember that context matters: I don’t like realistic “enemies” in my games; I don’t enjoy things like the FPS war-games. That doesn’t mean I don’t want them to exist, but it does mean that I’d be unhappy if we suddenly had the “realistic death of humans” they usually feature dropped into GW2, where it had previously been absent.
The issue isn’t just “the fish is bad”, but “the fish is bad, being added to GW2, in this very visible way.”
should pc change the way we think
yes, probably
The new mini pet, a Krytan Floppy Fish, is a fish out of water. It has a gasping for air animation and flops around on the ground. The question is, should ANet keep this animation or change it to a swimming animation. On one hand it is only pixels. No animals are being harmed. On the other hand, it’s depicting an animal suffocating and dying. As for myself, while I know it’s not real it does give me an “Ick feeling” as I watched it lie there gasping for air, so I would vote for a change in animation. Your thoughts?

Are you serious? Should we also feel bad for the pixelated ambient animals we kill by accident in thousands? This fish is one of the most hilarious things I’ve ever seen. Besides, how do you even know if it needs to be in water? If you didn’t notice, our characters never drown or need air. This game isn’t exactly very realistic.

its magical it doesnt need water or air the flapping is just how it moves with no legs. its fine and happy.and before you say i have no evidence supporting this claim you have non showing its suffering.
Q: How many internet users does it take to change a light bulb?
A: It only takes one to change it, but it takes another ten million to find a reason to be outraged, offended and/or personally insulted about it.
i love you. thats hilarious.
These threads are fun because they bring out the absolute worst of both sides. There are some valid points on either side, but it’s drowned out by the people who overreact in the worst way. You’re either a terrible puppy-kicking monster for liking this mini pet, or you’re a sheltered…I don’t know…snowflake or some other stupid buzzword, for not liking it.
It’s ok to not like things. And if you’re passionate about stopping animal abuse, then good. You find your inspiration wherever you can and join a cause in the real world.
And it’s ok to think that a pixel fish is JUST a pixel fish and not feel the weight of every injustice done to animals when you look at it. No one is going to buy this gemstore fish and think “This looks great! I’m going to go leash a fish and walk it around my neighborhood!” Probably. And if they do, they have deep rooted problems that a person on an MMO isn’t going to fix.
The point is, calm down. Everyone.
There are some valid points on either side,
This is a game that rewards the player with an achievement for killing large quantities of rabbits, birds, deer, etc. (ambient creatures) that are incapable of fighting back and will never agro. The game rewards players for kicking a quantity of chickens. The game rewards players for killing sentient, tool using, clothing wearing creatures in obscure locations who are doing nothing but hanging around their personal garden of 12 cabbage plants.
With all of the anti-social, rude, and simply evil things players are encouraged to do in order to obtain rewards, it’s nearly the pinnacle of snowflake hypocrisy to complain about a decorative minipet that has an unattractive mode of travel.

Couldn’t put it better. It’s legitimately about ‘How’ they could form that opinion given all other things they have conceivably done in the game over the years without a second thought. And ‘Well it’s just my opinion and you can’t change that’ isn’t really an excuse here when their opinion is advocating for a change in a cosmetic item players have purchased for likely the quirkiness of it’s appearance and demeanor.
Fun thought, in a particular level of SAB you have to tempt some piranhas in a pond to leap out said pond at you. Avoiding them correctly has them flapping on the ground, still fairly hostile to you, and you beat them with a stick which makes them docile enough to pick up temporarily.
Your mission with said carried fish? FEEDING IT ALIVE TO A GIANT SQUID.
Explain to me, people who wish to change the Floppy Fish, how this instance of character actions to advance a level is somehow not on your radar to change?

It appears in Tyria, fish are able to survive out of water after all.
I had a long and well thought out comment on this and then I realized…. this is a game. There is no discussion that needs to be had. It’s not real. It is not a real living creature and anyone who is this deeply affected or by a small cluster of pixels on a screen probably needs to get out into the real world for once in their life and develop some priorities that aren’t absolute kitten. This is literally the same insanity as peta getting mad at Nintendo for their cow milking 1-2-switch game.
Afterthought: I’m also pretty sure that refunds for anyone who bought it and wants it would be in order if they did ruin the fish, considering the whole draw for the fish was “lul floppin’ fish”. You guys are not only trying to ruin someone else’s fun because of your own impossible ‘moral’ standards but you’re also creating a problem for anet in the process.

Because W2 in SAB came out years ago.
Are you saying that everyone’s been silent until now? Because that would be AWFUL of said people, keeping silent about the tragic savage deaths of blocky fish with snorkels. Or they are full of kitten, and don’t actually have a valid position on this.

I’d like the fish replaced by a drowning villager from super adventure box. Occasionally (every second) it would play that horrid “miaaaaaaaoow!” sound followed by a sort of distressed 8 bit gurgling.

I love my Mini Professor Mew so much. I’m voting for this twice!
I like the fish animation how it is. It literally has the most Swag out of any mini when it follows you on land. Swimming underwater is just an added bonus.
No is the answer to OP. Yes they should keep it. If you are somehow offended by “floppy fish miniature” don’t buy it . Simple as that. It’s a video game. Fiction, fantasy.
Hell if you really can’t stand it. Don’t play GW2. We could use less hysterically emotional people in our community.
I’m going to have to say leave it! It’s a little silly but it’s really not offensive.
We are playing a game where we walk around and kill animals, people, plants, and other things with swords, guns etc. I’m really not seeing how this is offensive to someone if other aspects of combat or creature killing aren’t.
