To clarify, do you mean unlocking them should effect all your avatars? If so then… yes.

If you mean they are bound on acquire then… no.

I don’t think so. I think the fact they are tied to a single character keeps the market for rare dyes healthy.

Makes it harder to test all the colors for 5 avatars tho. Personally im not as interested in the “rare” colors as much as having a full palette. If you are worried about its price, they can always reduce the drop/quality rate of dyes.

BTW, whats the price of (unidentified) dyes in your server? Tarnished Coast is about 13 silver ea.

The Black Lion is shared by all worlds, not any one in particular.

@Topic: They should not be bound to individual characters (and that wasn’t the original design either, they were originally account unlocks) but then they realized they could monetize the gem store better and make better use of dye booster packs if they split it up. That’s unfortunate because it hurts the players in a senseless way.

I’m not going to sit here and go QQ PLAYERS NEED MORE EASY NAO or anything because I don’t believe in that, but when design decisions negatively impact the quality of life of casual players over something as frivolous as armor color then I feel there’s something worth getting fussed over.

I think you should have access to all dyes for the purpose of looking at you char in the dye window, but need to unlock them to put them on your armor. That way you could test them out and know what you want to go for. As for people worried about dye economy you can always lower the drop rate to keep prices up.

The simple fact of the matter is that this is not a market simulator and that having what you perceive to be a healthy market isn’t exactly good for the game’s health. If you sit in town trading then hey good for you if that’s your thing and all, but for the majority of us we don’t want to deal with kittenty prices that do nothing but line your wallet.

The market should serve to better the masses, not just the market jockeys. Tying dyes up like this only serves the market jockeys.

Yes.

Anet’s Crystin Cox said, in an interview a few months before the game launched, that they made the dye system the way it is because they wanted each character to have a unique palette and dyes should be a sign of character progress and blahblahblah.

I’m sorry, but I think that’s dumb. People go out and get the colors they want anyway. All this does is, once again,, cause trouble for some people by forcing them to go out and spend gold they don’t have and/or, you guessed it, get them to peek inside the gem store.

If someone wants all their characters to have something as simple as a C-O-L-O-R, why would you make it hard for them? Especially with the insane amount some dyes cost, getting certain ones for all your characters would be an absolute nightmare.

This entire thing is infinitely more frustrating because in a 2010 blog post, they EXPLICITLY said dyes would be account bound. I feel like between this and the manifesto, there’s a lot of back-peddling going on and I’m not sure what to make of it. If these changes had good reasons behind them then I wouldn’t mind, but everything they do just seems like a way to make everything the player does harder…and for what?

If dyes was made shared across the account, it would slowly ruin the possibilities of selling them.
If you want the same dyes for all your characters, they can be purchased at the TP.

That blog post is the only reason I’m mad about soulbound dyes. I don’t know how I missed it but I guess this was changed during the BWEs but I did and I bombed the gem store with well over 100 dollars for dye packs believing that they were still accountbound until I found out in early October when I made my first alt…..

Even at this point 4 months into the games life I think they should make dyes accountbound. I’d love to have abyss on my thief but the only what thats happening if I get a precursor and sell it, get it via an unidentified dye or I win the lotto.

When did they bring in that Ncsoft person to help monetize the game? This past January right?

Listen people, dyes aren’t meant to be your gold source. They were meant to be a little cosmetic extra that will make your character look nicer. It’s sad that the market of this game is in the hand of freshmen economists that exploit and capitalize on anything worth gold, making more casual (in the sense of not being worried about their gold all the time) suffer.

I think Dyes are fine, it might be PR to claim that having them character bound makes for unique palettes but I have certainly found it so.

Each of my characters have their own scheme that I use for them alone and none look alike.
If I really must have a specific dye, I buy it off the TP.
I don’t care much for the rarity- I sold my abyss because I prefer midnight fire- only the colour and how it looks on a specific character.
You can always swap colours with your guildies, so you can all get what you want.

That would be cool- in addition crafted dyes should have a higher change to actually be of the tier that they are crafted on. As it is they are difficult, expensive and time consuming to craft

Maybe it wouldn’t be a bad idea if all the dyes were shared between your characters, but this means that eventually you won’t be able to sell them on Market, since everyone will have them, expect new players.

The system we have is fine imo. I would make one adjustment which would effect the UI. Have it so any dye you unlocked on a toon is accesabile to all your toons for BROWSING. So you can at least mod your armour to see what colours you like then then go find those. Alot of dyes look very different on different armours so a proper preview option with them would help tons.

+1 for having them viewable. Making them account bound would take a pretty big toll on the economy and kitten a lot of people off. We already saw what happened when they lowered the drop rates on dyes, however I think everyone was pleased with the accidentall higher drop rate around the Halloween event.

I think in addition to having unlocked dyes viewable, the drop rate might be increased a bit. I find myself wanting dyes, but the market for dye is too profitable right now to say no. Maybe up the chance of getting rare dyes too.

Any item with huge visibility with different tiers and very rare drops will have a market and be a source of trading/gold. So I’d say you are wrong, dye were obviously designed to be a source or trading and gold exchange.

I would like to see a central pool of learned dyes for my characters, as I really don’t care about them enough to begin with, and then finding im on a character who has learned none, when another has learned tonnes when it comes to gear colors just annoys me.

It does seem that the account wide stuff is getting more dynamic though.

The manifesto and interviews like the above were just ways to sell more copies and have no actual basis In reality at all.

Exactly this.
And I’m convinced that everything they are doing now is to not only sell more copies, but to try to get all the people that already bought to stop playing so they can reduce their bandwidth expenses.

Seriously they made their money off of you all now go away!!

I believe this because that’s the only reason I can think of for changing the basis of the entire game (horizontal to vertical progression). They know dam well that it’s 2 different demographics. The only explanation is that they don’t give 2 kittens about their origianl demographic because there are no sub fees, and now they can sell another few million box copies to a new demographic.

And the Gem store doesn’t make up for it. Hell I won’t even buy anything (other than char slots with gems from gold) because everydamn thing in there is a lotto RNG piece of kitten grab bag and you can’t even buy what you want. Just kitten up the cash and pray you get what you want from the RNG. For real money? HELL NO!!!

No it doesn’t. As long as the are Dye “PACKS” that give me random kitten that I probably already have I won’t be spending real cash on them. What it does insure is that I won’t be playing this game very long. Whcih is exactly what they want. Old players out, new boxes sold.

The browse/demo idea is the “best in thread”.
I like having to work for the dyes I want and make choices.
I love the unidentified aspect, and love that I can craft dyes.
They would not have made a ‘rare’-ness system if they didn’t want commerce to play a part in this. They knew the way the dye market economy operated in GW1, and they improved on it.
Don’t you think they are cooking up new colors for expansions? I don’t think we have hit 65 million yet, and that doesn’t even take into account blends and textures (peppermint stripe for Wintersday?).
I think the system is great and there is better to come.
The preview/browse feature would cut down expensive mistakes (bought the wrong green) and might cut prices a little, but it would be a crowd pleaser, IMO.

My personal preference is yes, I do wish they were account-bound, not character specific. But I remember when that was the original intent (it was either in beta, or perhaps it was pre-beta?) – then later changed. It’s not a game-breaker for me, of course, just would prefer the dyes to be available to all my characters.

I would like to see them account unlocked, but also have the ability to have it show only those unlocked by current character (like how HOM worked in original GW). That way “new” dyes could still be unlocked/used on alts/characters (thus satisfying those who think they should be character specific), thus there still being a ‘market’ for them, while still allowing us alt-aholics to be able to use specific (namely high costing ones) ones unlocked on mains (most likely).
