My question is:
I just started playing again… no real interest in the reaver class at this time. Is it worth getting the expansion? Or is it 100% dedicated to end game? Meaning…. should I wait to purchase once I get to level 80?

Thanks

Well, I don’t know about PvP, but on the PvE side it is 100% dedicated to endgame if you’re not interested in Revenant. (They don’t interest me either.)

Well, if you pre-purchased you’d have a free character slot. Now that we’re past launch though, I don’t think you really have a reason to purchase it until level 80. (Again, PvE speaking.)

Personally I pre-purchased only for the character slot because I refuse to start the Heart of Thorns campaign before finishing story mode season 2. (I didn’t even unlock my elite spec yet.)

Wait.

Currently there’s nothing that’s actually fun to do yet, because honestly as pretty as the graphics of verdant brink are it’s not like there’s anything that’s actually fun to do in it.

Also it’s important to note that the existing dungeon content got completely butchered, so right now they are 100% relying on the raids coming up soon to be a complete hit.

Wait and see, just don’t be too hasty to purchase new games ever. It’s not like they’re disappearing forever after all so just be wise and do a little research into what you’re purchasing.

If you’re not interested in the new profession and you’re not even level 80 yet, definitely wait. Why buy at full price now and not even be able to play the content when you can wait until you’re level 80 and probably get it on sale? The holidays are coming up after all… and judging by the reception HoT is getting, there’s very possibly going to be some good sales.

Currently there’s nothing to do besides grind for mastery unlocks and levelups, because honestly as pretty as the graphics of verdant brink are it’s not like there’s anything that’s actually fun to do in it.

That is actually a matter of opinion. My guildmates and I are having a blast exploring, finding all the nooks and crevices they have hidden, and leveling up our masteries doing the event chains. The commentary on a lot of them is well done and amusing.

Waiting will cost you nothing and will only make this mess of an expansion better.

A clear win/win!

Do you have a large guild? Are you close to 80 and can’t wait to run with a random blob to do events?

Those are the only two instances the expansion is worth it. For solo playes you can do almost nothing. It’s tedious.

Wait until it’s for sale. Revenant is alright.

Honestly? I’d wait a few more days at minimum to let them iron out bugs and such. We’ve had several patches since launch, and I’m confident we’ll have more. Holding out until things are a little smoother’s great for you; you get to finish leveling/whatever it is you’re doing now and, you get a nicer experience once you do decide to purchase HoT.

Aside from that, right now the community’s split between Halloween content, HoT, Revenant leveling, and farming the new map bonus system for materials. Not to mention Stronghold for sPvP and the new Borderlands for WvW. In short, we’re all over the place trying it all out. So again, waiting would probably provide a nicer experience once the initial “rush” is over with all the new content we just got.

I’d wait, there’s always other stuff you could do whilst waiting as well since i’ll probably be purchasing once it goes on sale and have completed my other goals first before heading onto HoT. That and it’ll also give time to iron out bugs and have people experiment with the content and put guides up for the new content.

There are already population issues and dead maps. And with all content designed as if it’s getting zerged, goodluck completing anything when you’re stuck on a dead map.

Mobs are all very similar as well. Spam a lot of poorly telegraphed, hard to avoid CC or one-shot mechanics. So enjoy going from full health to dead a lot either very quickly, as in instantly, or while you go get a drink because you have zero control over your character.

HoT is mostly doing the same events over and over to grind out Mastery points. Which you need because parts of the content are arbitrarily locked behind requiring certain masteries, such as vendors, gathering nodes, events, Hero challenges. Not that it tells you untill after you waste your time trying and come to the conclusion it is impossible.
And there are quite a few bugs with events getting stuck, or crashing, or server disconnects. That sort of fun thing.

Map design itself is a erradic mess. Its often very unclear how you need to get somewhere, and with the knowledge of how content gets gated behind Masteries you’re just left to wonder if maybe you cannot figure it out, or if you are just not allowed to do it yet.

If you have other things to still do in GW2, do those first and wait and see how HoT develops.

Seriously, don’t buy it unless you enjoy jumping puzzles with large sections locked behind grind. This ’expansion’ feels like a cynical insult to its loyal player base by ANet.

Depends on what you like to do. Mostly solo player in small guild (avg 6 ppl on at any given time). I love this expansion so far. I mainly do Open World DEs, exploration and WvW. The new map is challenging and huge but for me fun. It feels like a fresh, new game and that is what I was hoping for.

1. New map – Level 80 (if this is what you mainly wanted to do, wait until you hit 80)
2. Guild Hall Acquisition – Level 80 (same as above. once the guild has it though, i think any level will be able to go in. You could use one of those teleport to friend items to get in there.). Acquisition is possible with small guild. We completed our expedition last night.
3. Revenant – Buy now so that you can level this at your own pace. As you level, get as many hero points as you can. You are going to need them to unlock elite spec once you hit 80. Not sure how long it takes you to level but there will be waves of ppl hitting the new map. If you buy now, you can catch Wave 2 or 3 (around Thanksgiving).

I have not tried WvW or sPVP yet. Not into Fractals either. So can’t say if it is worth it for those modes.

Can you feel it? HOT HOT HOT

You waited to release, minds well wait a bit longer since you’ll be waiting to use most of the xpac anyway. And sales!

Wvw doesn’t need xpac unless you want to grind out the elite specs (which arn’t actually that elite in theory) and you’d probably be okay as a beginner in pvp as well (not sure if anything is stupid op at the moment)

My honest opinion is this:
If you’re not lvl 80 yet, wait. You have time to get it, and do the stuff.
If you’re 80 or close enough, get it, get masteries unlocked and start doing those.

Just wait. I really like the expansion, but it’s tailored for level 80 characters. Unless you absolutely MUST play the Revenant, there’s just not a lot you can do with it until you’re level 80.

Play through the base game, and if you want to keep going after you finish, the expansion will still be there. It might even go down in price, depending on how long you wait.

As far as I know HoT is basically all end game stuff after level 80. Considering I don’t have any level 80’s, yet, getting HoT is pointless. So I would say get a character to level 80 then get HoT. If you actually play long enough to reach level 80 then you are probably invested enough in the game to warrant buying HoT so you should get it then.

My highest character is level 25 and I bought the base version for $50. However, I think the preponderance of advice here is good…wait. I just did it because I’m looking for a new game and have enjoyed a few days of leveling. The game is beautiful. But, most of the HoT stuff seems to be for maxed out characters. For me, purchasing it is motivation to commit and max out a character.

Good luck with your decision.

@op, i would wait. And that comes from a player that has only spent 2 ish months in this game. I started as a free to play user but after a couple of days playing i bought the expansion because i loved the game ( i am an old time wow player who lost interest in that type of gameplay). In gw2 , before hot, i and a couple of friends found a very nice spot in an mmo that did not force you to spend lots of hours and coordination to have fun. Thing is if you skip or did/do not know of the new maps and skills gw2 is still a good experience. But the new expansion is to me so far a huge let down and tbh not at all worth getting. The base game is by far more fun and enjoyable, and if given the option i would honestly like to not know of the new maps and other gated sillyness.

The new zones will be completely empty in a couple of weeks so you won´t be able to experience the new content. I´d buy the xpac now. If you like a hard game with little hand holding then HoT is for you.

There are a few threads now with players trying to get a refund on HoT. Don’t purchase the expansion because you probably end up with buyers remorse like most of us.
