Especially seeing as how it can be replayed, as it grows larger it becomes more and more daunting to have to play through it with new characters. It sort of seems like progress should be tied to account rather than character.

The area scrolls to teleport to a LWS3 region remedy your problem.
Achievements are account-wide..
So why bother doing it a 2nd time?
What sort of progress are you talking about? Just clearing it on the story sheet?

Account based story would kill replayability for it, story is already cut in lots of sections so anyone can start mid-way or even newest part only if they want to not do the older parts.
I’d say they’ll have to find a way to make a big portion of the only social parts skippable for the sake of less tedious repeated experience because after the first 2-3 times story is no longer interesting to see/hear but rather get the loot and the satisfactory feeling of having it completed faster.

Cause as it stands right now, anet rewards you also if you pllay through the storsy/LW with multiple characters.
There are things that make spefic content in the game easier for you, if you have played through the game and LW with multiple characters.

However, I can suggest the proposal of makiong the story progression accountbound, kitten longer the story becomes, so more time taking it becomes to keep all of your characters at the latest story and becomes more and more tedious, especially so more characters you have and feels repetitive.

I’ve played through multiple characters to 100% exploration and alone this felt already extremely repetitive and becomes quickly boring to the point, that you wish map exploration should becoem acokittenbound and gaining further items for legendary equipment should be gained after the first one through a different option, that doesn#t require th player to do with every single character each time 100% map exploration..
Buy further units of that item instead with Gold/Karma in a direct manner would make it faster and less repetitive.

Personally I like the idea behind sub classes ~ quoted from Chris Whiteside

I would love for the STORY part to be account bound, so that I could work on the achievements part of them on any character.

Id prefer to keep it character based honestly, you get rewards for doing it as it is per character which is enough for me.

However it would be nice if once it was done on one character you could then do the achievements on another..regardless of if theyd played through it.

The pvp community reminds me of what Obi-kittenenobi describes Mos Eisley as from star wars.

I would imagine the rewards would still be character based, but the progress in terms of what’s marked as completed and available would be account based. I think they’re going to be forced to make this change sooner or later as the story continues to grow larger and larger.

They didnt have to in GW1, so why would they need to do it here? serious question though, in GW1 you had to do the story on every single character, whats the difference?

“Because GW1 did it that way” isn’t really a good reason, especially considering GW1 was a very, very different game that was designed in a very, very different way on many fronts.

Didnt answer my question however. Why should they make the story account bound, when its your characters story and not your accounts. I see no problem in making achievements obtainable on different characters if one has ran all the way through the story, i still think each character should play through the story all the way.

There’s only so many Episodes (6-8 or so) per ‘story’ that must be done sequentially for access. I’m not sure there will be a need to make it account-wide. Only those players that want to experience the story in toto would ‘have’ to play through the entire thing, and it would seem those players would not want to skip Episodes, anyway.

You can start any Episode on any character at any time, there are a handful of steps to be done in a episode, I don’t see why they_need_ to be account bound.

Why? You don’t actually have to play through the story on every character and it doesn’t matter if you don’t. The story assumes that your character has played through it regardless of if you actually did, since the events are meant to play out in real time. If you’re not playing it as it’s released, you’re essentially reliving past events.

There’s only so many Episodes (6-8 or so) per ‘story’ that must be done sequentially for access.

Only the personal story (original and HoT) needs to be played in order. Since the living world episodes are sold individually, you can play through it in any order, which has caused problems such as missing the tutorials and masteries in earlier episodes.

No, leave it per character. More rewards that way, and makes some of the weapon collections quicker

That’s true; even less reason to have them be account-wide. Except for the one instance stated above, I don’t see the advantage, or need.

I’d hate to make it all account bound. I took a lot of alts through Hearts and Minds to get the ley boxes at the end and get an ascended armor piece. I took several alts through chapters that gave a choice of light-med-heavy armor pieces at the end. I used story to get xp towards masteries.

The achieves are account wide. So you don’t have to take every alt through, only those you feel like in order to get bonus rewards. Converting story progress to account wide would be a nerf not a QoL.

It seems like everyone in this thread is misunderstanding. When I say “make progress account bound” – I’m talking about unlocking the available instances, not rewards from completing those instances. There would be no feasible way to make those rewards account bound.

I would not make this assumption; as far as I can remember, every time something in GW2 has been made account bound the rewards have also been made account bound. (Though I may remember wrong here, correct me if so.) If that’s the pattern then making LS account bound would take away rewards for all but the first run-through for the account.

The only purpose in showing it as if the episode was completed, and thus allowing you to start from any step, would be to try achievements on different characters. Your actual progress would still be character based and thus skipping would result in no rewards with it stating that it wasn’t your current step and progress wouldn’t be saved. This can already be done by joining someone else.
