Q:

In-game, I’ve noticed characters that appear out of nowhere and then disappear just a moment later. Usually they appear next to (random, not some specific rich) gathering nodes, but I’ve began to notice them also appear near zone portals recently. I’m almost positive these players are botting/cheating (somehow warping from node to another) but the thing is, I don’t want to risk my own account in case I’m actually making false accusations because I’m not 100% sure. So, should I report them or not?

Yes, teleporting bots.

I’ve seen them at nods, and they will appear briefly at waypoints.

Report them if you can.

Jumping puzzles, love them or hate them, I hate them. Thread killer.

Best way to report is the take a screen shot and then send a report online. That way, they don’t disappear before you can go through the in-game report process.

I’ve seen this, but keep in mind some people have alts at nodes to gather more efficiently. So if you see different characters at the same node thats probably it. On the other hand I’ve seen myself a character flash in front of a node, flash at the next node I see, then the next.. Now THAT is a bit obvious. But again like I said, some of these may just be players logging into an alt trying to gather mats for a craft and simply logging back to their main to farm, grind, quest w.e.

whenever you see a player at a node and you’re not sure he walked there, select and click report. if the player walks away, cancel, otherwise (he disappears completely – and your selection disappears as well, if its just a shadowstepping thief or lightning flashing ele you’ll still have him selected) report him for botting. especially for the normal nodes. a normal player might relog with alts for a rich ori like it was in southsun cove (did it myself a few times), but not for an iron ore somewhere.
if you happen to accidentally report someone who was just logging out, don’t worry too much. they most probably won’t ban someone for 1-2 reports on them (they even said it needed more reports and even then they’ll check themselves) and they won’t ban you for mis-reporting once if all your other reports were fine. some of my reports have been questionable (wasn’t 100% sure someone was cheating, could’ve just been a bug) and I’m still around.

@Vol: do you really park alts at nodes, login, gather, logout instantly afterwards? seems incredibly naive doing that knowing exactly how it will look. just walking a few steps around would make you clearly distinguishable from botters.

Some nodes like omnomberries, ancient tree saplings, or even mithril, don’t need to be rich to be farmed by alts. When players are at a event spot waiting for it to spawn, whos to say they don’t in a quick hurry log to gather and quickly log back to watch the event.

Or am I incredibly naive thinking Arenanet will ban me for numerous unsubstantiated bot reports? No. I don’t care if people report me because I have nothing to hide

You can tell when they’re alts because they have to load the game and will probably pause for a few second after loading. In comparison, a bot will appear, instantly begin gathering and then vanish as soon as they’re done.

My game loads character swaps in 3-5 seconds. Although I usually take a second to look around, or sometimes get agro by mobs which i kill.

Report them if you can.

That’s what I expected so thanks for confirming it. Managed to report the one player which appeared and disappeared (with selection also dismissing itself automatically, like Oranisagu suggests) every 10 seconds at the CS entry WP. The character kept doing that for a good 5 minutes at least.

I’ve seen this, but keep in mind some people have alts at nodes to gather more efficiently. So if you see different characters at the same node thats probably it. Well, I don’t support that kind of playing – I think it beats the whole purpose of playing – but each to their own. I’m however aware of it and I’ll try to distinguish parkers from botters myself when reporting, via obvious differences (like character not disappearing as soon as the animation completes). Of course, if you fail to look like a human-controlled character, I guess that’s your own fault because that requires hardly any effort.

I’ll let ANet sort it out if I accidentally report a player who has parked Alts on a node. Part of the risk is you are going to get reported because your behavior is similar to a BOT.

The warping going on is so fast there is no way it is people logging in alts.

Yes, if you aren’t botting you’ll have nothing to worry about. I find it odd so many are trying to defend warping. Actually, no that is par for the course these days. Cast doubt that botting takes place and companies ignore it. See Blizzard.

The fact still remains that you submitted a false report, and were to hasty in doing so,it Can end up badly for me if you did.People have been wrongly accused before you know. And neither me nor anyone else that gets reported in this way and ending being banned for how many days, having to submit tickets and having to wait for how long, would like having to deal with all this..all because you thought i was a bot.

I have seen it in a zone where there were two gold nodes close to each other, saw four different accounts spawn, they will give it 1-3 hits, then disappear, then they would spontaneously appear farther down the field at the second ore and do the same. Also I saw one pop up swimming/mining on land – tell me that’s not a bot. They are difficult to report, you have to be fast.

I had a good laugh recently. was mining a copper ore in Metrica and someone instantly appeared next to me, mined, instantly disappeared. It could of been an alt, but who would park their alt at a copper ore just for the mining!? (I suppose it would only take 5 minutes to set up…) I assumed it was a warping bot, but who would want their bot to farm copper ore for them!?!? (I suppose it’s less obvious and thus less likely to be detected, despite giving about 1/5 the profit…)

obviously he’s getting upset because no one wants to be banned from their account for several days/weeks for no reason. I doubt you would want that either.

By submitting guess reports your clogging up the employees times who are looking to ban actual RMT. Your wasting resources that could be used elsewhere. Also, too many wrongful reports and you may get banned yourself, as it states on the tos. Its on each person to decide, just remember to factor in everything is all.

I know someone who was temp banned because they gave a guild member gold for the title. They had to wait days to sort it out. Personally I posted once on forums about an idea I had, unfortunately i posted in 4 places. Thinking 4 was not soo spammy and that they were all relevant forum pages. Without blinking I was permabanned from forums because the 4 simultaneous posts ranked up permaban points. I explained the situation and it was sorted out, but look at what happens to people. Whos to say you don’t get someone banned by accident and they get so annoyed they stop playing? Your unintentionally hurting the game and population. I’m definitely not for RMT, botting, or hacking, but you need to have a clear picture when causing undo stress on players and employees. From a business standpoint your clogging up hours of work for people who have better things to do than follow shadows. I’m not against reporting, I’m just saying make sure you know. In the case I stated above where a guy appeared at every node ahead of me, yea, that’s not normal.

Hi everyone,

If you suspect a user is cheating, you can report him using the in-game tool.

You can also submit a ticket to the support. Submitting a ticket will allow you to join a screenshot and a short explanation of what you saw and suspected.

Thanks for your help
