Hey everyone,

It makes sense that my heritage gear and zenith gear are free-to-apply skins. In addition to hellfire and pinnacle skins, they’re essentially event gear acquired by special methods that reward players for commitment to the game, either by achievements or playing Guild Wars 1.

I was wondering, then, why my Black Wings and Ringmaster hat were not free to apply skins. Seeing as they’re gem store skins, I thought that they, too, would qualify as specially obtained gear.

Cheers,

An otherwise satisfied player

I believe you only get one time free to apply, otherwise it would be too much of a free for all and would devalue their transmutation charges they also sell in the gem store.

I guess that makes sense. I was just wondering why my heritage and zenith were always free to apply without restrictions

Now wouldn’t that be nifty. We usually get one free apply of each skin we buy, though for armor sets I almost feel like just unlocking the skins and giving us 6 trans charges would be more efficient.
They do want you to buy trans charges, and the game already throws them at you anyway though. Seriously one per mapped zone most of the time.
New toon, map each home city and LA for 6, add each starter zone for 5 more.
I think I’ve picked up about 24 doing world completion on one toon so far.
That’s 4 full armor changes right there. And then PvP tracks have a few more.

Before the wardrobe update you could always get unlimited HoM & zenith skin items. So it would be a bit lame if you had to pay transmutation charges for a HoM item while you can get them for free in the HoM.

As you say, heritage and zenith skins are special rewards, including the no-transmute cost. There’s no specific philosophical or technical rationale why some things cost transmute charges and others don’t; it’s just a combination of marketing, pricing, and loyalty rewards.
