I’ve noticed a small but not insignificant number of people pressing for new races, but of all things, I feel that new races would likely add the least to the game for the amount of work that would need to be done to include them when compared to dungeons, regions, game modes, or professions.

That said, the number of people who have called for it does seem significant. I can’t help feeling that I might have missed something. For people who feel differently, could you please elaborate on the merits that additional races would provide?

A new race, at the very least, will come with:

  • New racial skills
  • New areas
  • New story (even if it’s only up to level 30)
  • New enemies
  • New looks (even if only for that race)

There are none coming, so no point in prioritising something that doesn’t/will not exist.

A lot of people have also asked for challenging content that they can invest a large amount of time in. You have to keep in mind that resources will always be limited. If ArenaNet decides to add a new race instead, it’s really just new models with a few of the things Palador mentioned. It will however be a lot of work to put all of this together. That is not to mention that for every new armor set that comes out they have to create skins specifically for this new race. When you consider that adding a new race would not actually add to the long term replayability for the game but still require a lot of time and work, then it’s not worth the investment.

As much as I wanted to play a Tengu, I have go agree with zeromius. This game has problems, and they’re getting worse, not better. Taking the time to make a new race would be a huge mistake right now.

Given ANet’s track record, that means I expect to see tengu by the end of the year.

Further to that point, it is impractical to make a new race. What they are starting to do now is open up more parts of the world. That is a good start because so much of the world map is currently inaccessible.

In GW1, they made he mistake of releasing too many things, and pushing too much stuff to later content.

Prophecies had no unique professions, there was 4 professions 2 unique to Factions and 2 to Nightfall, and they had no skills or gear in Prophecies, and Nightfall no skills or gear for their uniques in Prophecies or factions.

Instead, they should have released 5 core professions, 1 unique to each campaign. And all have gear and skills in all 3 campaigns.

The most important thing is keeping things consistant, and old content relevant.

So for tengo that’ll mean a story that works for both while the dominion was closed and for when tengu started running around all over the place in swarms.

I don’t want many new races. I only want Tengu. Preferably along the third soldier profession, Elona and Cantha.

They can take all the time in the world. I just want them to happen eventually.

I’m still waiting for the Beyond chapter for Elona in GW1. And I’ll wait unti they add it. And they call me to help and test stuff if they want to! Or even to do it myself if they can give me a place to live and a daily bowl of pistachios and raisins to eat.

Yeah, as much as I’d love new races, I think the time isn’t right yet for them. ANet has basically just reworked a huge bunch of the existing game (and there’s a lot of people unhappy with it); it needs to really stabilise first before we throw in something as major as introducing a new playable race.
