You had something awesome with the original GW, lore and style wise. I’m just sick of wings, glitters, pink charrs asuras everywhere. This game has become pre-school material and I cant take the direction it’s going. Pvp: 3 maps rotating literally. Pve main story: theres’a dragon, need to kill it, period pretty much. Totally cliché and uninteresting considering the amazing lore from first game.
Was waiting with great hopes it would gradually get some more “mature” breath of life into it. Not even sure why call it GW2 since it shares nothing of the original style and vibe. GG im out. Flame away.

You don’t like the game, fine, there’s the door. And I don’t mean it in a bad way, I totally get why many fans of the original dislike GW2, I really do. But after three and a half years you’d think this conversation would be over.

I enjoyed GW, but I haven’t been back since GW2 launched. Despite some missteps, I’m generally pleased with the game’s overall direction and can’t wait to see what the future holds for the game.

This has always been a cosmetic game, not a complex one. But I agree that GW2 pvp is an under-developed tragedy: I think the PVP and WVW “were” the only things that truly set GW2 apart from a typical free mmo, and the only future of the game if there is one.

I’m sure there are others who feel like you OP. And there are people who feel differently. And there are people in between.

But I’m absolutely convinced more people have played Guild Wars 2 than have ever played Guild Wars and that there are more people playing Guild Wars 2 right now than there were 3.5 years into Guild Wars 1’s life cycle.

Can I prove it? Nope. But it seems very likely.

We have had a dev say there are more Guild Wars 2 PvP players at one point than there were during the entire run of Guild Wars 1, or something to that affect anyway.

The original gw had people running around the towns as giant candy corn golems, as either headless char or with flaming pumpkin heads or with giant black wings, as well as a bunch of other stuff.

I think you’re not remembering Guild Wars 1 very well.

Excuse the poor quality picture. I took this picture using the camera feature on my old iPad, way back in 2010 or 2011.

A day in old Lions Arch. In this case people were amusing themselves by transforming into ice golems. I think they were trying to spell a word or something. I’m one of the golems in the middle.

This game has plenty of goofy stuff like bobble-heads, aviator boxes, food fights, chicken runs, crab toss, a bow that shoots ponies, etc… and plenty of players that seem to enjoy the flavor that this type of content adds to the overall experience.

Sounds to me like OP is simply playing the wrong game, and should pursue his opportunities with something that more suits what he is looking for. Staying here and complaining about something that was never designed for his tastes in the first place seems kinda silly, IMHO.

sorry, you’re right, deep down I must’ve been harboring the eternal hope that some of the original style would make a return. I’ve replayed GW1 recently and just felt disappointed of how different the sequel turned out.
The candy corn and outfit sillyness in GW1 was fine because those werent the base styles of the characters. Here the constant exposure to badly drawn charrs and asuras with goggles and wings and childish weapons makes me sick to the stomach. And I wish it didnt because I had a good time with the pvp, regardless of being unable to play the same 3 maps again without throwing up, as well as the blatant failure of developers to promote class and build diversity, simply reshuffling the skills every 4 months. Pve and main story are completly unengaging. A few maps are cool and that sums up Pve.

They’re not the base style in GW2, either.

Guild Wars 2 wasn’t meant to be a sequel to Guild Wars 1 in any way except lore and world. Gameplay-wise, it’s a sequel to the MMO genre.

GW2 has sold around 5 mil and totalling about 7 mil accounts INCLUDING free to play accounts. GW1 has sold 6.5 mil, all paying accounts, which I regret telling you, it means the first game still outperforms the second by about 1.5 mil copies – not that your population pointing means anything relevant to the game’s actual quality

Except, the way Guild Wars released campaigns, many of those sales were from repeat customers. I, personally, bought 7 copies of the various campaigns. But, since you linked them, it ended up being only 3 accounts.

I do hope you will add all expansion sales for GW2 after the 10 years, and then compare the ‘account sales’.

He said number of people played, not number of boxes sold.

That 6.5 million includes all of the campaigns/expansion, the majority of which would not represent seperate/unique players. On my main account alone I would count for 4 of those 6.5 million (prophecies, factions, nightfall, eye of the north). You would need to divide that 6.5 million by between 1 and 4 (lets say 2.5) to even start seeing a ballpark number for the number of GW1 players. So, 2.6 million players for gw1 compared to 5 million paid players for gw2?

It felt horrible to let all the depth of the first GW go. I miss being able to open my character panel and being able to choose from literally hundreds of skills. I miss being able to play one of several pvp modes, or hardcore pve raids. The second GW is a huge departure from its predecessor in many ways.
The only thing thats kept me going is the combat.

Team Deathmatch for PvP – Raise the AoE cap for WvW – More unique events for PvE

To be fair the gw1 numbers were generated, for the most part, during its first 3-4 years before development/expansion stopped. The time period of gw1 as a current, living product is comparable to gw2 as of now (between 3 and 4 years).

Guild Wars 1 sold 7 million games. I bought all 4 games, as part of that seven million. They never said seven million sales of Prophecies. Assuming most people who played bought all four games, that means that you have to divide that number by 4, which means less than 2 million copies sold. In fact, I have five accounts between me and my wife. Guild Wars 2 probably sold more copies pre launch than Guild Wars 1 did in it’s entire history.

It is unfortunate your experience has made you feel this way about the game, but really this is Arenanet’s game and if they want it this way it is their choice. There really isn’t a single MMO I can think of that doesn’t have large amounts of cosmetics or satirical content that is silly. I mean what exactly do you play a game for? Complete utter immersion? Companies don’t make games that apply to just one type of person— hence why there are cosmetics for both people who like or dislike wings on their back. Hair color shouldn’t be something you complain about because people in real life with real jobs have pink hair or glitter. I don’t know what to tell you but in my honest opinion it seems you have become a bit jaded in your views— hypercritical.

PVE- Kill a dragon: Yes that has been the premise before the game was even released, but if you played the game there is more to the story than just dragons(unless you truly are that jaded and blindeyed)

PVP- 3 rotating maps: I’m assuming you mean WvW, and if you do there is a huge difference between pvp and WvW. PvP has 6 rotating maps, 1 team map, and 1 new gamemode stronghold map. WvW has yes 3 rotating maps, but also eternal battlegrounds, edge of the mists, and obsidian sanctum, 4 unique maps.

Lore- GW1 to GW2: Yes the lore is different from GW1, but you can’t just throw in that much content so quickly. The lore isn’t gone, but after hundreds of years 99.9% of the population with that lore is gone; all that remains is a few npcs and remnants of what was once alive before the dragon awakenings. GW1 lore had nothing interesting about the dragons really so it makes sense that the lore separates after the all the destruction. Plenty of lore is present, but maybe that just doesn’t appeal to you? Your right this isn’t the same game, wasn’t meant to be, but is in the same world with its own new conflicts.

Everyone has their own opinion but if you base your statements on ignorance of what is actually in the game, then I don’t see how you can make a point? Misplaced facts and jaded statements really are not a good way to make valid arguments(let alone make you sound relevant). My only gripe with the game is the speed of content releases. I try not to be jaded when I criticize, because when you think about it… If all the content in the game now was at the initial release of the game(core), no one would complain, but people have been around so long that they chew up and spit out content like gum.

This game has no monthly fees, so if you feel burnt out go play another game and come back later when more content is released. The game isn’t going anywhere and you are free to go wherever you want. How many old games do you take breaks from and return to months or years later? Plenty I’m sure.. So I don’t see anything wrong with suggesting it. Does that make those games you leave “bad games”? No it doesn’t. Is this a low content game? Well I paid 120$ for this game in total— Got 3 years out of it, thousands of hours, which leaves me with about 16-20 hours per dollar spent minimum— Sounds like value to me.
