And racist and sexist things that players say in GW2 on a daily basis, by not blocking certain words or at least replacing them with words like ‘kitten’ etc., after 2 years of dealing with horrible players (and blocking at least 200+ players in the process) and having no one at Anet listen to us despite multiple threads over the years, I have decided that not only will I block the players who say these nasty things, but I am going to start retaliating and throwing back some heterosexual insults – being as Anet seems to think it’s fine and dandy to ignore our pleas of doing something about all the homophobic comments (in particular) and racist/sexist stuff.

I’ve had enough of being ignored and hearing these insults on a daily basis with you guys not doing anything about it. And Anet, if you do actually care and want to ask about how to resolve all this, I’m not going to repeat myself just to be ignored again – don’t ask what you can do about it, I’ve said it many times… look at my other threads on homophobia and the ignore/block system and DO something about it. ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS.

And yes I know ‘fighting hate with hate isn’t going to solve anything’, well, I’ve been ‘nice’ to the homophobic players for 2 years and listened to the insults everyday (I even have my filter system on max, but still hear these words used in a derogatory manner – and I will put money on it that someone is bound to throw some insults in this thread too, which is why I’m not even going to come back to it after I post it), reported them, and seen no improvements in the filter system (despite Anet saying they’ll pass on the suggestions – the talk is cheap, and nothing has happened), so my only conclusion is to reflect the hate because it seems the only thing that’s going to get players to shut up about calling everything ‘gay’ and perhaps get Anet to do something about it.

It’s not in my nature to hate others and say nasty things, but you leave me no choice. You’ve done nothing about it, so you leave me no choice but to retaliate in anger and frustration.

I don’t see how sexuality should even be brought up in a game. does it matter (in context of the game I mean)?

Oh, it’s you again. I’m sorry that this sort of thing is still upsetting you so much. Given that you won’t even be looking at this thread again, there’s probably no point in replying, but I’ll do so anyway.

1) You’re right: fighting hate with hate isn’t going to solve anything. It’s not even going to achieve anything – nobody is going to care about heterophobic insults (if they even recognise them as such). The most you’ll achieve is getting yourself banned, if you actually manage to be insulting, and I don’t think that’s going to make you any happier.

2) What words to you want filtered? As far as I’ve seen, most words which are actually offensive are covered by the filter. ‘Gay’? Yes, it can be used offensively (in the ‘gay’ = ‘lame’ or ‘bad’ way), and I’ve gone very strongly on record in favour of offensive uses being bannable. But it isn’t inherently offensive. If I tell someone that I’m gay, then what’s wrong with that? In fact, I would be insulted if the word gay were filtered, because that would imply there was something wrong with being gay.

Other times, the offense isn’t caused by particular words, but by the content of what is being said. You can very easily be racist, sexist or homophobic, while only using language that is perfectly acceptable.

I imagine Anet realises this, and therefore can’t do anything about it. All they can do is have a human check if the usage is offensive or not, and then respond accordingly. Unfortunately, that can only work against each specific individual, so any other player can appear and start saying the same things. Admittedly, I have no idea how harshly (if at all) they punish people for casual homophobia, especially when it’s more ambiguous, so maybe they could be more harsh about that. But otherwise, it’s the best solution possible, as far as I can see.

3) Remember, you don’t have to read any chat you don’t want to. Restrict your chat window to guild only, or whatever. I know, this isn’t a great solution, because you’re having to restrict yourself for something that other people are doing wrong, but if you’re consistently getting so upset by other people, then it might be better for your own peace of mind.

So please tell me again what lesson is to be had from you sinking to their level and threatening to do the very same thing?

I’m thinking the OP might be over-sensitive. Surely there are people in the game who do insult others, but they’re a very small minority.

And some people do get banned for saying stuff like that. We’ve had them post here on the forums. First ban is usually 72 hours.

But the fact is that we all have to deal with people like that wherever we go and a game community isn’t an exception. There are posters that have commented on measures that can be taken to alleviate the stress of dealing with these people but in the end it will be entirely up to the OP and how he/she responds.

I’ve honestly encountered very few racially or sexually hateful comments in my time playing GW2, relatively speaking, however I won’t say it doesn’t occur just because I don’t witness it.

Having said that, responding in kind would make you no better than them, and would also make you liable for a ban. The best solution is to simply block the offenders and report them, and then put them out of your mind. There’s no point in mud slinging with those kinds of people. After all, why dirty yourself just to throw mud at someone who is already swimming in it?

You have to consider the perspective of LGBT people before labeling them as over-sensitive. They’re in a minority group that faces discrimination on a daily basis. That wears a person down — and seeing any of it in a game that’s supposed to be a tool for escape can just send someone over the edge.

OP, report, block. If you retaliate, they can report and you can be banned — if your retaliation warrants it.

No, I’ve played literally dozens of MMOs here and the only one I saw less or about the same amount of it in was City of Heroes.

I’m not a fan of bigotry of any kind. But this game isn’t as bad as many. You want to see bad, go download Archeage.

You hear insults on a daily basis? Is this on EU servers? Considering I’ve never seen something overly offensive in chat on NA, I’m guessing you’re either instigating it, find everything offensive or its limited to one of your private chats, like your guild.

Report players in-game, once per chat session, every time they say something bad. This will add a timestamp to the chat for ArenaNet to look at. If ArenaNet find its offensive, they’ll receive a ~3 day incremental ban. The chat filter isn’t however going to be updated with simple words.

Did that not work for you? Are players somehow still able to message you? It sounds like a bug, if so. Have you submitted a Tech Support ticket asking for assistance? The Team is pretty good with helping on Tech Support matters.

Do people insult you on a daily basis? If yes maybe you are the problem. I’ve played this game for 2 years now and I don’t think someone ever insulted me.

If you feel you have to block 200+ people OP I fear the problem might be with you.

I have no one on my block list after 2 and a half years… altough… Now that I think about it, I might racist/sexist myself, or a sexy racer hell yeah!

Dear OP,

Stop hanging out with the Blackgate server. Not every server is full of sexists and homophobes. And don’t even try and deny it Blackgate. I’ve been around you guys in megaserver instances.

Also blocking the word gay would be blocking the word any time it’s used, even when it’s not being used as an insult word. That is basically censoring gay people.

I understand your frustration with encountering bigotry, but blocking certain words doesn’t solve that problem. If someone is using certain words to exercise hate-speech or oppressive speech then use the report feature by right-clicking their name and report them for harassment.

I wonder how hard it would be for Anet to develop a custom censorship option for the chat windows?

If anything it could be kind of fun to see how chat looked…

Actually, ANet does get to decide what is acceptable within the confines of their terms and agreements policies and if they stipulate that a specific kind of behavior is not warranted and thus ban-able, and you agreed to those terms upon creating an account for the game, then you are subject to those parameters.

Hate speech and verbal abuse fall under “unacceptable behavior” as far as those policies are concerned so by rights, ANet can and should act on that. It has nothing to do with our personal beliefs or preferences.

Freedom of speech doesn’t apply to private venues. The reason freedom of speech exists it to give us reason to protest those in power. That’s how it was conceived by our forefathers.

They idea that it gives people the freedom to malign other people is a sadist’s fantasy and nothing more. That’s why certain things are illegal like threatening people, and calling fire in a crowded movie house and hate speech and inciting violence.

Because this is internet. If OP is so sensitive toward opinion, laughs, trolls etc in internet it means he cannot hold it mentally. So what’s the reason to touch that subject in the first place? Unless he’s masochist, so that thread would be a sign of his hypocrisy then.

The language thing is right, but if OP did report those people many times and they’re still free, it means they didn’t cross the line. We don’t have examples of such conversations. It may be heavily insulting for OP, and I or you may laugh at it.

I believe that in those latest years, all this promotion for homies, makes people puke and hate them even more. People are sick of it, since it’s not normal.
I doubt that people are like – go hide yourself, I don’t wanna see you – etc, but promoting in mass media, making it look like something great etc.

Because media promote homos and weirdos like Conchita Wurst as something far superior than normal people. Media make normal people look like freaks, meanwhile weirdos are graded as normal.
It’s obvious that people get kittened off and eventually burst out with their hatred.
It’s also obvious that only minority will flame media for doing that, while majority will forward their hatred toward those people that media was promoting.

Yes, i do actually know. And it wasn’t really about hate (unless you mean general hate and anger, not directed at something specific), but more about nihilistic tendencies, wanting to burn something down, coupled with lot of alcohol. Seriously, we’re talking about people that came to the city in question armed with molotov kittentails in order to make a riot and wage a street war with police. In case of the Rainbow they might have claimed some political reasons, but in truth anything would have done for them.

And i don’t really get hating others just because they are different. In the end, everyone is different.

I also think OP is a little over-sensitive… I, for one, have never ever found someone being that homophobic/sexually racist to me. You might just log off and relax for a while, you should realize things aren’t as you’ve stated, and therefore there isn’t anything ANet can do. On another note, you can always report people for verbal abuse, but think it through before making mistakes!
