I’ve been leveling some new toons and came across this event several times in the past week and the scaling has bothered me immensely. Can it be looked into? It does not scale favorably at all if you are trying to solo it. You have to kill risen attacking trebuchets/cannons, revive vigil engineers to re-build the trebuchets/cannons when they are destroyed, avoid the large and rather long lasting poison fields from the ash horizon itself, and on top of that it takes a good 40-50 shots from a trebuchet to sink the ash horizon, even if you are the only person in the area. If you try to attack the Ash Horizon from the water you just get swarmed with dozens of risen and won’t last long enough to kill the ship.

I have only ever seen this event completed once while playing through SF, and that was a long time ago. So could you, ANet, look at making 1 of 2 changes to this event?

1 – Increase the damage that the trebuchets do. I think 20 shots from a trebuchet should be enough to sink the Ash Horizon, which is about half of what it currently takes. This gives individual players a much better time with this event, as its possible to revive an engineer, hop in and fire off 1-3 treb shots before the poison stacks from the ships attack become too much and you have to retreat.

2 – Remove the poison field from the Ash Horizon’s attacks and slightly decrease the spawn rate of risen on the beach. This would keep the trebs/cannons alive longer, meaning the player can devote less attention to reviving the engineers every 5 seconds to rebuild the siege.

And can the rewards also be increased a bit. Failing the event results in more rewards (especially experience) if you then do the next few events that come after it. So if the rewards for this event were increased, it might provide more incentive for players to complete it.

The easiest way to finish that event is to swim out and stab it with your spear. You can move around quite a bit since the ship has a gigantic hitbox that is at least twice as large as the visuals would have you believe. That is assuming you are using a power build since objects in core are still immune to conditions.

This exactly. I’ve successfully soloed this event on my ranger and necro. It can be a little harder on some other classes I’m sure but those two it’s easy.

I found that the defend event for that Ash Legion Camp in southwest of Ashford Plains is rather unbalanced too

The ghosts usually just overrun the camp and even if you manage to kill them all it doesnt help since they still easily destroy the 2 tents before the (ridiculously long) defend time is over

Edit:
Found wiki article … it even states in there that it is unusually hard…
But i guess if the event chain ONLY resets on failure Anet wants to force the failure… seems kind of stupid

I’ve soloed this event a few times without too many problems.

You need to understand how the event unfolds.

-Undead spawn and attack the siege repair dudes while ship shoots poison fields that kill siege and npcs aswell.
-Revive dead npc, shoot siege, support the npcs with heals/boons, kill undead. It takes all four of those when solo.

The core classes that can do all 4 if traited/skilled to do this with any gear/weapon set,
warrior
guardian
revenant
ranger
engineer
thief
elementalist
necromancer
Mesmer

Tell me which class you are and if you want core/elite specialization or not and I give you the utility skills and 1 trait line you should take to complete it solo.

Just did it solo on boon chrono in 6min. Funny thing is the last few shots didn’t actually come from me using pact siege, reflects work against the ship attacks lol.

I don’t think an event that requires an elite spec build to solo in a level 55-65 zone is balanced that great. That elite spec build has hundreds of extra stats, on top of their third traitline slot and an uberpowerful traitline to slot in there with their elite spec. Though knowing that reflects work is definitely incredibly useful.

And that is still quite a lot of things for 1 person to be expected to do for sub average rewards from that event, considering that failing it leads to higher rewards if you do the followup events. That’s part of the reason I want the balancing to be looked at, even if its just balancing the rewards with the event chain that you get access to if you fail sink the ash horizon

This event can be done solo with a Mesmer using a greatsword from the shore near the cave to the hylek fort. There’s an old YouTube video showing how to do it. Any profession that can use a melee weapon can swim out to the ship, hop onto the boney part at the front and attack it and destroy it from there. If you’re even semi-careful not to aggro the risen they leave you alone. And you don’t even need HoT skills or specializations.

Yeah I came across this event when doing world complete on my necro. It was doable (we did it the correct way) but this random new-looking player that followed me in had a lot of trouble. Think I rezzed him at least 10 times.

Still not as overturned as Nebo Terrace.

seriously…

feedback
medic’s feedback
warden’s feedback
temporal enchanter

don’t even need a focus, just feedback and medic’s feedback for bubble will do wonders. Trait glamour, even better.

I’ve soloed and duo’d this multiple times. I use the cannon that’s as far back from the water as possible. The fish catapults hit it from time to time and I have to pull out and heal until the poison cloud goes down, but the Risen mostly go after things on the beach level.

That said, the solution I use may be a workaround due to an oversight on Risen leashing during the event.

This event is easy to solo. You just have to find out how. Engie by far best, Ranger i’d say second best. But lots of professions (if not all) can do it, if you approach carefull and clever.

Legendary weapons can be hidden now!
No excuse anymore for not giving ‘hide mounts’-option
No thanks to unidentified weapons.

I’m not arguing that its impossible to solo the event, just that its dis proportionally hard to solo it for the rewards that are much worse than if you let it fail and do the followup event chain.

I find if I call out in map chat, someone will come and help. Then I don’t have to solo it. The only exception might be when Teq is on, so do Teq and then get people to help you.

I guess I defend this event because, unless you cheat it, it actually feels like compelling play. Unless you are leveling, the rewards hardly matter and in truth if you don’t know about follow up events then it shouldn’t really bother a player lvling up anyhow.

I think it’s silly that it takes almost 10 minutes to solo it the normal way (with the siege weapons) but I can swim out to the ship and kill it in under a minute with my normal weapons.

Those armadillos would be a lot cooler if they looked more like real armadillos. mmm armadillos

Well, after all is said and done it’s still a boat. You put kitten in it below the water line, what do you think is going to happen?

I was testing out the siege weapons here several months ago, and really, they are awful. As with other events that allow you to use siege, you’re more often stuck standing in one place and being swarmed by the enemy while being ineffectual.

If you want to do this event, take it to the enemy.
