Why were the skills gated behind such high level requirements? I understand that new players need guidance, but forcing people to have to wait until LEVEL 40 for any sort of combat potential is unnecessary.

I picked this game up seven months ago with little to no experience in playing MMOs. The combat system is(/was) the most simple and intuitive system I had ever seen. Once you learned your skills (at level 20!) all it took to play the game was your own eye-hand coordination. Nothing else. Now you took a system that was 2 years old and doing fine, and destroyed it.

Good job, Anet. I was on board with the traits at level 30 thing, but this…is wrong.

Because reasons.

Apparantly we have to be severely handicapped so new and less gifted players can have a good time in their disney world playground.

I think it’s weird that I will have to go back to the starter areas to unlock skill points. That seems a little regressive to me.

If Club Penguin was an MMO, this would be extremely close.

Hopefully this is an error of someone not carrying a one somewhere in their math and not intentional, because this is a very bad idea.

At a guess I’d say that beta weekend retention was bad, and they did research on why. The research led to the conclusion that in a weekend, people didn’t have time to learn the system to appreciate the game. Anet wants more retention for people who start, particularly during free weekends.

Now they have that, they can run a free weekend or even a free trial.

Fine with me, as long as they give veterans the option to opt out of skill lock. At the moment I have no desire to level my alts until I have more birthday scrolls.

Birthday scrolls get you about halfway through the process. Still have to climb the rest of the way.

At the moment, I don’t feel like playing at all. Do you realize that it’s now impossible to do a daily (complete, that is), on a low level character? No conditions, no dodging, no doing condition damage, no underwater combat, no skill point…
The only ones you can do is salvaging and kills.

Kitten new players, why do old players have to go through all the same kitten? I’m not a new player. I know how to kittening dodge and create my own build. Let me play the godkitten game ANet.

Don’t think they group tested that notion otherwise they would realize how much of a pain it is the 2nd – X time through.

Someone over there actually thought the new system would be great. Someone thought that new players have to be babystepped through the whole leveling process.

But why the friggin f… do they have to cripple experienced players who are leveling an alt? 5 out of 6 new characters get played by experienced players and ANet just kicked them in the nuts.

Why didn’t they created a tutorial for all those new players and leave the rest be. Really, the old system worked perfectly fine, but it got replaced with a system which hinders the player in order to not “overstrain” him.

Can’t even use the mistfire wolf elite anymore, which you could have used as soon as you first unlocked the elite slot (around level 20ish?) now it’s 40… I haven’t played this seriously in about a year. Doesn’t look like I’ll ever come back with the way these updates keep going. Viva La ArcheAge!

I do realize. I also realize I don’t have the data they do so I can’t really say anything as to what’s a better way for them to keep new players around. That said, I dislike how this affects experienced players. Obviously just raging “OMG this sucks!” doesn’t get very far so I might as well try to think of a halfway mark where both sides can get they want/need. If an instant 40 scroll was available for gold I would buy it for my alts. I would still be able to enjoy the lower leveled zones at my leisure without the pop ups and limitations that lower level players would have.

What was so broken that they needed to lock everything? I just came back today after being gone for over a year, unaware of this update until I logged in tonight. Earlier today I got up to level 7 with a new toon to relearn the game. I figured it out and got back into it by about level 3. Now skills are locked out. Instead of combat being fun it is a boring chore. Level locks and no weapons swaps = BORING. Even pet skill is locked out.
This is terrible and ruined the game for me.

There is dodging, conditions and condition damage. It doesn’t make it better but they’re still there for lowbies.
