As mentioned on today’s Ready Up, Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns will introduce the brand new Mastery system. In preparation for the release of the expansion pack, and beginning with the June 23 game update, Level 80 characters no longer will gain spirit shards (formerly skill points) through the leveling process. Instead, these characters will be able to acquire extra spirit shards through drops in the open world. For more information, please see our June 10th blog post about the changes coming to the Guild Wars 2 Wallet.
From the open world? So how do WvWers get them?
From the open world? So how do WvWers get them?
The same way they do: Champ bags. Get on that mindless k-train, it’s what Anet wants in WvW.
This is an intended nerf to the availability of forge currency, and is also 100% intended to affect the WvW crowd by driving up the cost of superior siege.
wvw is open world . kill guards, you may get the shards….
Honestly I don’t see the point? If they want to nerf the forge then just increase the forge prices… If they want them available on other characters then give the characters a scroll of knowledge every level?
I’m really confused what the purpose of this is.
So what replaces the 70% of a level we used to get in dungeons?
@Gaile
I assume the other changes are coming along as well? Hero points, change to the stat system (rebalance due to traits) are coming with it as well?

You will still get 70% of a level.
So, what do we get from leveling? Nothing?

You get a nice aura around you and you hear a WOOSH sound. ;p
So, what do we get from leveling? Nothing?
Until we get mastery I guess…. nothing ?
What’s happening with the racial skills?
A lot of good questions, no answers so far. Hopefully we will get some before the patch, maybe with the patch. It could also take ArenaNet weeks to answer these obvious questions but I still have hope
hail to the God of RNG hahaha xD

You’ll be leveling masteries after 80. Instead of getting a skill point which is basically used for gold or crafting (and you’ll get that currency in other ways now), you’ll be progression your character through masteries.
Thanks for the info Gaile (and to Josh for the other mammoth thread).
I think it might be worth a forum specialist rounding up some of the FAQ’s around these 2 threads to make it easier for the devs to answer in a single thread. Lots of good follow up questions (like boon and condition duration) being bandied about, but they are a bit all over the place.
The current experience points will be used to level masteries, but that’s a pretty good question: between june, 23rd and the xpac, what will happen with the experience we earn.
What i want to know about this change is how level 80 characters will get skill points to unlock utility skills. If it’s only through skill challenges in open world that’s a huge pain in the kitten to wvwers.
This is going mess up the market on all skill point crafting. Sounds like a bad idea to change such a core system.

No, read what Gaile said, and what I said. She said HoT will introduce masteries. After Tuesday, you won’t get skill points from leveling. What do we get for leveling between Tuesday, and the release of HoT?

Here are some questions I have:
So instead of one guaranteed from each time you’d gain a level, it’s now RNG? LOL
It took me 2 weeks! to get a single portal. I guess it’s time for pastures new. I’m going to wait and see before buying HoT. I don’t like all the nerfs making crap professions worse, and now even more RNG & Grind.
I love this game but it’s getting a bit much.

How?
What exactly do you need a steady supply of spirit shards (previously, skill points) for? Serious question. Do they actually get used up that fast that it is crucial to get one every time you ding a level? I don’t use the Forge much at all. I have hundreds of the suckers on my alts, and hundreds more stacked in my bank in the form of scrolls I’ve gained from various sources just by playing the game — and that playing is maybe an hour or two a day in terms of really going at it in PvE (I don’t PvP), mostly by doing one round of SW.
I am very curious as to why people feel the level-ding-point is so incredibly vital to their well-being.

Superior siege blueprints. The price of ACs has risen 5 silver the past few weeks. And I haven’t looked up rams.
This is worrying. We have a reliable method to get spirit shards (skill points) via leveling which is now being taken away to be replaced with RNG…

Sounds like there will be many avenues to acquire Spirit Shards:
You will be able to earn Spirit Shards through Daily Achievements, Champion Loot Bags, PvP Reward Tracks, Birthday gifts, and once you hit level 80, from Tomes of Knowledge and regular drops from creatures.
If, of course, the unofficially-released upcoming Patch Notes are valid.
Good luck.
