Hello friends! I’d like to get some clarification about the conversion of Scrolls of Knowledge in the next patch and how that will affect unlocking slot skills.

My current understanding based on the blog posts about it (one and two) is that all Scrolls of Knowledge are going to be converted into Mystic Forge currency called spirit shards, and the only way to unlock slot skills (as well as traits) will be to level a character to 80 and to perform Hero Challenges to earn Hero Points.

So, my questions are:

1. It doesn’t matter if we use Scrolls of Knowledge before the patch because any excess (“excess” being defined as not rewarded through leveling or skill challenges) skill points on each character will be converted to spirit shards. Is this correct?
2. If I have leveled up a character with mostly Tomes of Knowledge and haven’t done many of the current Skill Challenges (which will become Hero Challenges) and then used Scrolls of Knowledge to generate enough skill points to unlock slot skills I wanted, will that character lose access to those slot skills until I go out and perform Hero Challenges and generate Hero Points? (I know the blog post says that “A level 80 character that’s done none of the hero challenges should be able to unlock more than enough skills, specializations, and traits to make several unique full builds” but I doubt it will be close to the number I have unlocked now.)

2. A level 80 character (with no Skill Challenges) will have 7/8ths of all possible Hero Points unlocked and ready to spend. (400/465) To accrue the final 65 Hero Points, said character will, indeed, need to venture forth and complete the 65 remaining Hero Challenges (formerly Skill Challenges).

My guess is they will grandfather the existing characters so they don’t lose anything but anything you don’t have will need to be aquire through the new system.

There will be far more hero points available in the world than just 65. There are already over 200 skill(hero) challenges present, and there will definitely be new ones in the HoT areas. The 465 points is just the amount needed to unlock all base skills and traits, without elite specs. And, likely, without racial skills and the antitoxin spray (wonder what they’ll do about those, seeing as Revenant will likely not have access to them at all).

2. Yes and no. As the 2nd post said, you will be awarded hero points based on your level. It doesn’t matter how you gained that level; either exp content or tomes. However any scrolls for skill points won’t give you hero points. You need to do some skill challenges in the map.

So right now, if you level a character to 80 via tomes, chances are you won’t have skill points for most of your skills. However, with the new system, you should have enough hero points to get most of your skills when you are 80.

They specifically said 465 will unlock all core (existing) specializations. So you will need more to unlock the elite spec.
