Anet please fix this. Just look at the difference! I had finally perfected my look when I log in after patch to see this hideous thing.

1. Option to revert the changes, so that those who like the changes can keep them and those who don’t can revert (preferably this) OR
2. Make dyes affect armor like they used to but keep the glow.

Thank you so much for reverting the way dyes affect Sylvari armor but keeping the glow! Also I love the new dye slot for t3 medium pants. The only sad part is (I hate to say this) now I can’t get the look I had pre-change or the look I had post-change since the areas dyes affect weren’t reverted. But I do appreciate that you made the change and I will just have to get used to this again.

It’s hard to tell what has changed, and how much is just the lighting difference in these screenshots.
Well, maybe you can’t see it that good, but lighting definitely isn’t the deal. The boots are different and the coat is different. It’s definitely changed. Now you can dye parts that weren’t affected before.

It’s something with Sylvari cultural T3 medium. First I noticed that dye slots were completely changed at least on male. But after trying to fix the dyes I noticed that they react completely differently to the gear after the patch.
I Attached a picture of my gear before and after the patch using the exact same dyes on the same slots
My helmet, shoulders and gloves are not T3 and they look exactly the same as pre-patch, but boots and the chest look completely different
Not sure did this change how every dye react on the gear, but at least glacial dyes look completely different. I had to remove Deep Glacial Sky from boots & chest and I just bought it couple days ago ;__; Such an expensive dye…. feels like wasted now

What are you complaining about? That looks good, certainly better than what I got.
Also female sylvari t3 gloves gained 2 new dye slots, which seem to have no purpose at all.
I think I like the after, Failth. It looks like they opened up the dyable areas a little bit and added some better shading.
My Sylvari T2 medium has also changed fairly drastically – it’s most noticeable on the leg piece. Will try to get some screenshots up but the highlight colour went from being very light to deep, bold stripes.

I have the exact feeling as Failth (even though I used ~60g on Glacial Sky and Glacial Teal compared to 200g, it still hurts). I’m slowly getting there to get my old look back, but it’s not the same…
I got on my Sylvari Guardian and the Heavy Sylvari t2 armor was dyed gold instead of Sky for some reason, assumedly because colors reset. They changed something surely but I haven’t noticed what it could be.
My Sylvari t3 heavy gloves appear to have stayed the same.
Found an old screenshot and took a new one to compare the medium Sylvari T2. All the pieces look quite different.

Folks have been vehemently requesting that the cultural armors glow, and they have been confused at the old glows that were there. This confusion was because a lot of the dye-to-skin blends on stems would glow the skin color, but not their chosen glow color.
In updating the armors, this comes with particular considerations. The armor glows are not on the same system as the body glow, so they will only glow the color of the area dyed. Armor glow also does not play well with alpha, so I have to avoid any alpha edges. The problem with this is most of those areas that look good glowing are also some of the areas that blend to skin. Armor glow also negates specularity.
So. What this means for you is, to add your glow, I reworked the dye channels to give you the largest choice and control possible over the glow. The areas that glow are now selectable for you. Some of the textures are also better balanced to give you more consistent results… you won’t have to guess what color you need to find to make the red feel red, for example. It will just work.
This currently affects Medium Tier 2 (legs will be re-addressed for better glow and dye alignment, sorry about that, it got past me) and Tier 3, Light Tier 1 (female only), and Light Tier 3. The other weights and tiers will be assessed for a similar pass to give glow or upgrade glow results when possible.

Thanks for the update Kristen. I will admit it was a bit of a shock when I logged in but I expect I will adjust, and it is nice to have the glow more prominent.

As a tier 3 medium user this change is the worst thing to happen.
The tier 3 medium armor now looks just the same during the night and day. How boring. Some colors become slightly brighter at night, but the difference between glowing and not glowing was a lot more noticeable before.

Which color can I use on sylvary T3 that is darkred and not pink or orange.

I love the update so much I’ll be rerolling my Necro as a Sylvari now. Woo.
Sylvari medium T3 was already a challenging armour set to dye. Now it’s impossible without making it look kinda bland and detailess. The red that showed among the dyes was the armor sets saving grace.
I appreciate the efforts to bring more sylvari glow, it’s something I much like but after spending countless hours trying to get my style to look just right I do feel fairly disappointed that it was so ruined. I suppose there’s always people who won’t like thing X or Y, and it seems like it’s my turn now, but I much enjoyed that my armor had the same glow as my sylvari with the excellent colour combos of the pre-patch T3 armor.
If this is WAI with no fix in sight I suppose we sylvaris just have to start looking for new styles. I’m hoping that if the demand is strong, this could be something that could be rolled back as it was before. Anyways, thank you for coming and letting us know Kristen, I hope you’ll observe the feedback on this
I think this would have worked much better if they’d added another dye slot for just the glow. At the moment it’s just awful on T3 medium. It honestly looks like a beginner armour because it’s lost so much detail. The whole point of a sylvari is its a living creature that adapts to its environment, and just like plants, they change colour. So why would anyone want an armour that’s gone from living and vibrant, with a mixture of different colours, to just a selection of 2 colours per piece.
How can any designer justify sacrificing so much detail within an armour set just to please a few? And by detail I mean the additional colours, and the range of colours that T3 medium once had and ofc, having a difference between the glow colour and the dye that goes under that.
Also, I’d like to note that it appears Caithe’s armour is the same as before, which is something that we as players can never achieve again. If she can keep the old, why can’t we?

I like what was done with everything but T3 medium. While it was difficult to dye it almost feels like the way it dyes now takes away all the detail. some dyes brought multi-color aspects to the armor that can no longer be achieved. While consistency is nice I feel like I lost allot too.
Please revert change! It destroyed the look of my armor :/
Does this mean… CoF flames getting option to be dyed soon?
Not to mention that I paid real money to get these sets.

Post recent patch:
Cultural 3 Medium Gloves – 2 dye boxes for male.
The addition of a dye box on this particular piece of armour? Yes, good, VERY GOOD, it allows for glow which was limited previously and raises the gloves above a simple, bland, wrist length pair.
So…would it be possible to tell me why a dye box simply wasn’t added to all pieces of the armour, where necessary, to allow the choice and freedom of the glow that is spoke of?
I mean, surely that’s better than changing entire armour sets and alienating people who have spent good money on obtaining said sets, right? Because that’s what is happening here. You’ve gone ahead and changed armour without a second thought to any ramifications, that much is clear in your post. All you’ve done is caved to the more vocal portion…well now that another vocal portion has come out thanks to this atrocious change…what now?

I actually like the changes. Though it would be nice to have some sort of extra colour slot for the glow, or maybe make it optional for the ones that don’t want it?
I absolutely love the idea of having more glow in our armors, but shouldn’t they match our Sylvari body glow? I don’t remember the exact shade I picked in character creation and probably can’t find out without a total makeover kit, but I would think most people would want it to match. While I’m completely on board with changing it from the default white-ish glow (like in the TA pieces), if it can blend into our skin tone can’t it pick up on our body glow color?

I use a mix of tier 1 and 3 light armor on my female sylvari and this update just REALLY upgraded her look! She looks amazing! Sure I need to play around with the dyes again to get a nice look, but once I’m done she’s going to look 10 times better than before. Thanks Kristen!!
Hey cool, if you guys are receptive to improving existing armor sets, will things be done on some of the human textures that cause a red line to go straight down the middle from chin to groin? It would also be nice if some of the various medium armor helms would have hair, even if it’s just random hair!

I understand people wanted Glow. I never really cared either way if the armor had glow or not. The thought never crossed my mind that the armor would have to be practically downgraded in design in order to achieve glow. So disappointed.
Edit: Just want to say since I am afraid I may have come off more harshly then I intended (I was quite disappointed by this) but I appreciate the effort that has gone into giving Sylvari armor more customization. And I think it would be great if it was offered as another armor set or alternative version. I just feel that after a year its about too long to greatly change an existing armor piece. It is actually a year this month that I have owned my tier 3 set so I am quite attached to its old style.

This is spot on and sums my feelings well too. It’s a huge graphical downgrade to lose so much detail to make it look like well…horrible.
Whoa. I take back what I said. Yeah…T3 Light armor looks terribad now. All the texture is gone and it’s just a flat color. I’ll gladly take what we had back.
…I guess I’ll get used to it. I always like the way that Sylvari armours looked before, though. i guess it made sense to me that it would pull their leaf and glow colours through, subtly influencing the way their leaf armour had grown around them. Now it’s just… bland.

Whatever happened to t3 medium is atrocious. The top dyes too darkly and starkly contrasts with the pants. All of the previously possible blending combinations are now non-existent. The two tone nature that certain dyes possessed is now gone. At the very least allow me to shift between glow dominance determined by skin or dye, if the new system can’t be removed entirely.

Katreyn sums up nicely what went wrong with the light T3 changes. It’s absolutely horrible, especially the legs. I can’t find any dye or combinations of it to bring back what my sylvari looked like before the change.
I don’t think it’s a issue of the dyes effect on the armor having changed (though it HAS changed). The skins themselves were retextured using a flat pattern that gives almost no depth to the skin.
The T3 skins used to have a glossy look to them, as if the plants that made up the armor were a little waxy. That texture is entirely gone. On top of that, certain areas that took their color from specific dye slots are now merged with other slots. It’s nearly impossible to get three colors to show up on any given piece.

Okay, this doesn’t affect me; however, I find it necessary to comment.
Other than obvious bug fixes, existing armors and even weapons should never be changed. Spend your time designing new things and leave the existing alone. People who like them use them and people who don’t, don’t.
It’s quite scary if we need to pay attention to every suggestion or request made by anyone because some designer might listen to and use that as an excuse to change something we like.
Again, this needs repeating, if we’re using something it is because we like the way it looks so please leave it alone. And, if you see a demand for a changed version, then make a new one that’s a variation of it.

Mind you, I don’t actually own any of the armors affected, so I can’t really see them in-person. But based on screenshots…
The idea of customizable glow is nice, though it does cause problems if you try to match your characters’ glow but don’t want the actual plant parts to be that color (though that was always a problem). So that I’d say is a mostly positive change.
The apparent “detexturing” of the armor itself, however, not so much. The new appearance looks much more matte and flat, pretty boring compared to how it looked prior (and no longer really matches how the Sylvari hair looks for instance). It looks more plastic now, compared to looking organic. Assuming that has something to do with the specularity removal or whatever.
The dye changes I’m also not completely on-board with. They, too, look more matte and solid, and less natural and blended. Makes it look like the leaf is painted more than the leaf being that color. Now some people might like this more, gives more control over the color you get with dye, but personally… I dunno, I’ll take the more natural look and need to finesse the dye colors a bit over this, personally.
I guess overall… not so happy with the changes. The glow is nice, and I’ll be the first to admit that I LOVE sylvari glow and say that its one of my favorite things about the race, but I’m not sure getting the glow is worth sacrificing everything else to get it to work. I can get my glow fix from face and hair, I’d rather keep my armor looking natural and smooth.
I actually like the new changes the color actually matches what i see, granted it does look a little dull it needs some more shine to it or something. Before I had to match like 4 to 5 different reds to get all the places to match so thank you for changing this.

I’m really struggling to understand why something would be changed after a year. I have seen fair fewer people wanting this change than currently complaining about it. Never have I had a conversation with someone saying “Oh, I bought this armour in the hope that it would change after I got it”. I don’t make the suggestion that I want human female T3 light and medium to cover up more so that I can then buy it. I would suggest a new set that is inspired by them.
I really wish we’d been pre-warned about this, then Anet might have gotten a better scope of the reactions. Perhaps I wouldn’t have wasted my time getting gold for a legendary on a character I no longer feel inspired to play.
