So Do Existing customers get a free upgrade?
Not to be negative, but I doubt that we receive a free upgrade, or even a discounted upgrade.
Also not to be negative, I know at least a couple of my friends purchased GW2 this week because of the free trial, so I doubt that they’re too happy, but there’s nothing that can be done, really. Nothing lost, nothing gained in this case.
Just to add I am referring to the price of purchasing the game at the store website not the gem store offer, So if i let the game mature for 3 months before buying I would have got a much better deal than being a supportive start/beta player.
Basically new players this month got free precursors and now they get free elite skill and other goodies, bad bad bad not to give existing players the extras
That is how purchasing works in real life, you pay what you pay to get what they offer when you buy it.
Money typically doesn’t come back to you when shops drop prices or movies go to the dollar theatre etc.
Why do existing customers deserve an upgrade? Its basically a sale on the game. If you buy a game and then 3 months later they they provide an existing piece of dlc for free with a new purchase of the game, do you expect to retroactively get the dlc for free?
It’s basically the same situation.
Would be silly if they get for free now for what I paid 25€. Plus we endured all the bugs of the first 3 months, which are still not all ironed out.
Looks like I have to wait 3 month after release before buying anets future products then.
Offering incentives to people who do not already have a product after the products first release in order to obtain more customers is common practice.
Your grocery store does it. Ever buy something at the store and find out that it went on sale the next day? How about when you moved into your home/apartment. Price different now? New move in deals that you didn’t get? Cable company offering $20 internet while you are paying $50? Phone company offering discounts on phone purchases with new contracts?
It happens all the time. Everywhere.
Why do existing customers deserve an upgrade? Its basically a sale on the game. If you buy a game and then 3 months later they they provide an existing piece of dlc for free with a new purchase of the game, do you expect to retroactively get the dlc for free?
It’s basically the same situation.
The buy.guildwars2 Website advertises a “free upgrade” though. At least the German one does. If they don’t intend to give a cheaper/free upgrade option for other customers, that line is very misleading.
Typically things dont go on offer after 3 months and lets face it if we didnt buy the game 3 months ago anet would be bust by now most likely, so I would say we deserve some reward for our support and paying the company wages, would be even more angry if I was a buyer of the digital deluxe version 3 months ago to find myself £25 out of pocket 3 month later.
Even a consolation of 1 of the items as a thank you would be nice.
As title says, received an email offering new purchases of the game the free upgrade to digital deluxe edition.
What about us the already paid, supporters of the game and people spending money in the gem store etc do we get a courtesy free upgrade to our existing accounts?
If the answer is no then yet another reason why to stop playing this game with the months recent track record. Maybe you should look at a game in a galaxy far far away that also lost all its customers for running the game like a sinking ship
So dramatic. The game has been out for nearly 3 months and released Halloween event and dropped a new patch with an amazing dungeon in it.
In WoW you get nothing for 6 months to a year. Diablo the fastest selling PC game of all time has had no new content and SWTOR is a 100% WoW clone like many games before it, and looked like it right from development years ago.
Guild Wars 2 is by far the best MMO released in the past 5 years. You bought the game, play it for free and you want free stuff that there offering to as a sale to new customers.
You tell me what sounds unreasonable. People that bought fallout 3 didn’t return it a year later when they released the game of the year edition and say I want that.
An upgrade would be nice but not necessary, grow up.
Put another way If the game was being given away free this weekend there would be an absolute outrage from thousands of customers, so those saying this happens all the time as a promotion really need to think outside the box and as another person pointed out they clearly state “free upgrade” soooo……….
Come on! are you really crying about this?
This is how business are. When you buy something before a sale… sadly you were unlucky. You don’t deserve anything, you bought what you got. Now is on sale… great for new customers. Do you want to take advantage of the sale? Call those friends of yours that were uncertain to buy and let them know about it.
and come on, just chill out!
Did you notice the picture they have posted on Facebook with that?
https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/704599_10151210953644209_1412083915_o.jpg
Sounds like another hidden message to me :S

But it’s not free so we can ignore this post entirely as it’s just plain over exaggerating an extremely common business phenomena that you deal with on a daily basis.
Did you pay the same for gas today as you did last week/month?
Get over it.
And for the “Free upgrade”. It clearly states with purchase of a new game.
FEEL FREE to buy a second GW2 account and obtain a free upgrade with that account. No one is stopping you. In fact they are encouraging you to do so.
why would i waste money on a second copy of the game?
you are walking in the mall, see some pants with x price, you like it you buy it, then the next week you walking in the same mall using the pants you bough, and you see now a message ‘’buy this pants 20% discount and plus get a shirt’’
normal people would say ‘’ kitten it’’
the other type will go to the shop and say ‘’i demand you give me back 20% of what i paid and a free shirt too’’
giggles me
well I like the photo there, lovely toon
really depends on whether that shop would exist if myself and others hadn`t bought the pants last week
Maybe they might make some people happy if they offered a reduced price to upgrade to the deluxe edition. And make an option to buy it outside of the game instead of the current in game only option. Which currently costs $35 to do in game :/
really depends on whether that shop would exist if myself and others hadn`t bought the pants last week
Then they would have a “Going out of business sale” and still be there a year later.
Welcome to life. Get a helmet.
Why would we? If I buy something from a store and then it’s part of a special deal a few months later I don’t get the stuff from that. You get what you agreed to when you bought it.
“Would be silly if they get for free now for what I paid 25€. Plus we endured all the bugs of the first 3 months, which are still not all ironed out.”
No, not really. We got to play it for 3 months. We shouldn’t deserve a free discount now after enjoying it for this long (though we should deserve a full refund for the kitten the game turned into, but that’s for another thread).
The people who bought the game this week, however, should. Them launching the refer a friend trial so close to a deluxe sale is a bit evil of them. Especially since it’s jerking around brand -new- who have been hearing us kitten and moan about the game for a while.
This, however, reeks of desperation. In short succession we’ve had the game. . .
- drastically change direction to appease to a new demographic
- refer a friend trial when this should have been in from day 1, and usually one comes in when companies really need to up sales due to poor sales or stagnation
- potentially peeving off their refer a friend trial purchasers as they ran a special one week after their sole refer a friend launch
- running a special for the game 3 months after launch
- the blacklion sale being so extreme and needing such a high bulk, 50 keys? At 50% off? I’m used to every other MMO where 20-25% is standard or pretty good, or there are no sales at all (the latter being rarer).
This could all be bad timing, especially since it’s black friday, but if it’s not, it could be the “open your eyes” all of us have been saying to look out for.
Finally someone with a bit of thinking out of the box ^^ above poster
Silly complaint, when you clearly got to play the game earlier than those who just bought it and got the upgrade. Maybe if you bought the game a day before the upgrade was offered, then there might be some sympathy, but that’s just life. There has to be some cutoff or everyone would be asking, “what about me?”
It’s very simple really. Anytime something comes out, you have the choice of paying the highest price to get it immediately, or waiting for it to go on sale. You clearly picked the former and are trying to get the benefit of the latter as well. No sympathy here.
Discounts to new customers after launch are standard for video games, just look at Steam. That’s all this is, a discount for the DD version.
The only oddity is no discount on the DD upgrade for existing customers.
Anet have made some bad choices lately. This is not one of them (imo).
They need new customers to replace those who left. I got the digital deluxe but they should definately try to grab more potential cashshop victims since a few os us are not spending any more money there.
Offers/deals are fine: Instead of wasting money on useless GW2 lotto-key’s I got Skyrim and all DLC for less than €40 tonight and I am perfectly fine with that – Even if they have it for €20 tomorrow because I wanted it tonight.
If they patch in geargrind (in Skyrim, GW2 is already a lost cause) tomorrow I will just mod their “protruding female bodyparts” off and still enjoy that I got what I considered a good deal when I clicked the “Pay” button.
As for “you are not playing, why post”: Downloading… But still plan to take a look at GW2 a few weeks from now :-)
I would be happy if they just gave me a free Rytlock
The other stuff is worthless anyway.

THIS
Edit: to clarify, do no think we should get a free upgrade or a free Rytlock just agreeing that the deluxe version is worthless except for the mini.

No, you will not get the upgrade for free. Get over it. Prices on things change with time. It’s normal…
What they should be doing is offering a free upgrade to the digital delux version as an in-game only special for Black Friday. Their advertisers could go on about what a great time it would be to buy the game if you didn’t already have it.
Unlike the things people have been making comparisons to, giving existing players special items that are already part of the game anyway costs the retailer nothing at all.
If they offered the “upgrade” to everyone, they would gain the same benefit (hopefully selling a few more copies of their game on Black Friday) while making their existing customers happier.
You’re complaining you’re not getting something for free, but your forget that you are not paying any subscription fee, unlike any other decent MMORPG. Yet, Anet’s servers ALSO need to be maintained…

Yes, but others games have support team
I’d say my biggest issue with this is that existing customers are still asked to pay for a full price on the BLTC for the Digital Upgrade. It seems kind of silly especially when the BLTC is offering some high discounts for Black Friday.
I don’t expect Arenanet to give us free copies of the DDX, but I think it’s only fair to give a discount to those who’ve already paid. I honestly don’t even care that much about what is being offered, I stand by this more on principle. Offering incentives to new customers while neglecting your existing customers is not a good way to grow your fanbase and keep your product strong.
I fully agree that players that have been around for awhile should expect some depreciation for the money they’ve spent, but it’s truely sad to see that they just brough in a bunch of new players (a friend of mine included) who could have just waited to get this deal. It shows lack of foresight and those new customers are not going to easily forget this when they consider future purchases.
Please tell me you’re kidding! There is a price for being first when it comes to things like games and tech gadgets. You get the use of that device/game earlier than others who choose to wait. The opportunity to use it sooner rather than later is worth something. If you don’t want to pay the higher price, then wait until it goes on sale…but don’t come on here asking for money back or some type of free upgrade.
And make sure you never buy a new car, since it will lose 20% of its value as soon as you drive it off the lot.
Quite the rude posts here.
I can see the problem….the page shows that the “upgrade” is “free” but is of course, misleading. It has a price tag. But the description mentions getting items “for free” by upgrading. If this is a mix-up, I hope Anet notices and gets that fixed.

I think the problem here is that the game is not really going down in price. The game is going on SALE for Black Friday and will be going back to full price afterwards. The problem is this same sale is not being offered to the existing playerbase.
I honestly think a lot of people wouldn’t care as much if the Digital Upgrade offered in the BLTC were to be discounted by ~50-70% like many other items on the BLTC are right now.
I think it would be silly to just give it to everyone for free, not when money can be made for Arenanet, but the truth is they could make much more money by offering a sale. Look at Steam, every time something goes on sale the sales go through the roof and they make MORE money from charging LESS. It also lets your customers feel like you care about them and are giving them something.
Of course if the game was permanently going down in price, I would still expect the upgrade to go down in price. Not free, mind you, but a price reduction of the full procduct should also have a price reduction to upgrades of its parts by a similar ratio.
Quite the rude posts here.

It shows the upgrade is free if you spend $59.99 (Or your countries equivalent.)
You can’t be serious. You got to play the game for 3 months! It’s a special sale which everyone should have expected for black friday. If you really wanted to, you could have waited because the price would have dropped anyway over time.

You will love Skyrim. If you get bored with the game, which will happen around a week or two, you can got to the Nexus Mod Manager website, and find thousands of mods that people create themselves to make Skyrim a better game. It is all about the mods.

^This. Enough said. Most things get cheaper as time goes on. I don’t feel cheated in any way.
It’s for a Black Friday sale. It works exactly like anything on Black Friday.
Say I bought a new TV in August, and for Black Friday, the store put the same TV on sale at a reduced price. Should I be asking for my money back on my TV? No. It’s the same case with Anet Black Friday sale.
wow, this reminds me of things I hear on a weekly basis for the company I work for as a satellite TV dish installer. On a weekly basis I will get at least 1 customer that feels entitled to the same pricing as new customers (new customers get a discount for 1 year). These people are basically asking for a permanent discount since the discount is always going. So even if we do give them a discount for 1 year, after that 1 year they’ll just demand the new customer pricing again.
OP, get over it, this is a very common thing that happens everywhere, it is a Black Friday sale, and you do not deserve anything, and Arenanet is doing zero wrong by you and or anybody else by doing this sale.
Or perhaps I should get with Newegg and demand they give me the coupons for Far Cry 3 and Medal of Honor for the video card I bought 2 months before that promotion started.
Scramble, welcome to real life.
Hey, I wouln’t be against getting some free gems, but keep in mind that “buy now” will always be more expensive than “buy later”.
technically you can do this by asking for a refund on your current key and using those funds purchase the new free upgrade.
no guarantee you’ll still have anything on your account when you apply the new key, but you got the upgrade free

This is exactly the wrong attitude for a company to have. The whole “new customer pay less” phenomenon would never have been even considered prior to the 80s-90s. Used to be a time when loyal customers were rewarded for their support with discounts and special considerations
Existing customers, especially ones who pay on a monthly basis, who have supported and had an account in good standing for X number should be treated with courtesy and thanked by the companies for supporting them. Newbie customers get low price to entice them sure. The problem with raising existing customers rates every year is that unless you have a stranglehold on the service or product you end up driving them away.
I cancelled Direct TV after 2 years of continuous rate increases, rude customer service, billing mistakes and shady billing practices. I have had Charter for my internet service for 6 years now, every year my rate goes up, and every year I call and they without argument give me the discount because my account has been in good standing. Couple that with, at least in my area, prompt and courteous installer/tech reps who come out when they say they will and they earned my loyalty. In turn as I said for my continued support, at least according to the script reading customer service drone, they routinely keep my rate at or very near the signing price.
complaints are meaningless here. 3 months are enough to stock on a huge pile of gold and trade it for gems in game, that should cover round 50% of your cash shop expenses even if you play 2 hrs a day.
Obviously prices drop with time, if you really want the lowest price for any edition of GW2 wait like a year or more… m sure they will drop

Man this sale is not cool. Yes, we did get a 3 months “early access” in regard to people who are just buying the game, and the stuff they get is “only cosmetic”, and probably the post where a dude says if you bought pants today and saw them on 20% sale tomorrow you wouldn’t walk in a store and ask for a 20% refund, but Anet could’ve at lest put digital delux on 70% discount (gem store) in the same time they offered it for free to new players, if nothing then as a way of NOT saying “kitten you GW2 supporters who payed this game at the beginning of this year and are playing it since 3 day head start”.
They could’ve also supported the players who played guild wars 1 for some time and not segregate them when new christmass gifts are being given, cause if you have 30/50 HoM points or more you can’t even apply.
It seems they only care about profits lately, they turned the game up side down only to accommodate “new players” and people who never played guild wars 1 (or even GW2 cause they don’t like the “we all have same gear” policy) but other MMOs. Ascended gear? You seen the amount of farm it takes? I mean I could even forgive them the legendary grind, but ascended gear is something that makes a power difference and makes it easier to play fractals. And you need 250 T6 rare material farm, 50 ectos etc. For dungeon that doesn’t give money (compared to other dungeons), karma, influence or anything else.
I seriously don’t like the direction this game is heading.

So..if they have a sale on the game..then since you bought it early you should get something every time? What service do you get that acts like that? I just want to know. There are certain companies with price matching qualities..however these mostly pertain to pre purchase research and will match a price before you buy it, not after it though.
If you want the DD for free… then can I gave the difference between the DD and the “normal” version back please?
Kind of rediculous, don’t you think? You knew what you were buying a few months back, and so did I. You could have known there would be a sale somewhere in the future -there always is. If you feel cheated or robbed or whatever, just wait a few months next time so you can buy the game on sale instead of full price.
That’s what I did for Dishonered, and it’s what I’m doing for CoD. I didn’t do it for GW2, because I wanted the headstart.
If you don’t want a game NAO, you can almost always save yourself a good amount of cash.
Well let’s see.
My ISP is giving me 1 extra IPTV package for free and has boosted my speed from entry level to 1 above, also for free, for being a loyal customer. I can’t say they don’t have special offers for new people joining the club that don’t apply to me as well, but hey, us “loyal customers” get sth also so we don’t complain.
My bank is giving me discount on certain services and better credit and saving interest cause I’m a long time member.
My car insurance is giving me a discount as a long time user.
My mobile provider is giving me bigger discount on buying a mobile phone cause i’m a loyal customer.
I could go on. in any case they do have offers to new users/members/whatever that don’t extend to us “loyal customers” BUT we, the “loyal customers” are not left behind and do have many benefits of being LOYAL.
Now, as for GW1, I’ve bought 2 accounts. I’ve lost the login information during the years for my first account and then I bought the edition that had all of the games in it (some black box edition, forgot the name). I’ve been among the first people who bought the game in my local store (it was preorder and i’ve been waiting for the box with beta key and game key to arrive for a few weeks) so I consider myself a “loyal customer”. The only thing I got was beta access (many people got it for free) and 3 day head start that I couldn’t capitalize on cause constant lags, disconnects, black lion trading company not working etc. By the time it all got fixed we were 10 days or 2 weeks in the game and people who played more than 5-6 hours per day and didn’t preorder have actually been ahed of me.
So yeah I think i have plenty of examples in my life where I haven’t been screwed for supporting the company. I have to admit I like what Anet is doing less and less by the day. It’s turning out to be bang for bucks and grind fest kind of a game we didn’t expect and with no regard for the people who actually supported it from the start.
