This is why a company should implement the small stuff like, seeing hp in numerical form etc form the get go. I know if I was to make a game, I’ll give my layer every resource available from day 1 so none of us have to play this guessing game. Also btw, controller support.

Actually you can use an Xbox controller for GW2. I set one up for my wife, but it is fairly complicated and she had to have a cheat sheet with all the buttons. In the end it turned out to be much easier to use the keyboard and mouse. :P

I’m used to controllers though I never could play properly with keyboard with mouse. If I knew how to do it free of charge I would.

There are all sorts of free programs that are made for controllers. Check out:
xpadder
or
Antimicro

I liked the Antimicro better then xpadder, but thats my personal preference.
You can also check out this thread on the matter. There are some presets listed that might help you out.

It would be nice if GW2 offered some native controller support.

I would love to be able to stream the game and play in the living room – you can do that with Steam or I use the Nvidia Shield – it works well except for mouse input which, as a product of being streamed back and forth, becomes completely wonky and barely capable of navigating about the capital city or doing crafting.

I have been using the SweetFX graphics mod for almost 2 years. The game is too ugly to play without it.

See my post above — as much as I enjoy digs at southern racists, it is still a grey area

If the punishment for using an “advantage-giving” addon is losing one’s account, they should be a little clearer about what they consider an advantage, as some features are subject to interpretation.

Also, “modifying game files” seems black and white, but I’m not so sure they’d be ok with library injection and memory scraping, even though neither of these touches the “game files”.

I know I’m wasting my time pointing these concerns out, but if there’s a chance that they get read, processed, and understood by someone who can improve the situation, it’ll all be worth it.

If you mean a “combat logger” program of sorts, a screen reader that can parse text inside a set boundary would be an approach that’s more gray than outright black, as both methods you mentioned can (and probably will) be viewed as attempts to intercept client/server traffic and/or game file modification.

Using the screen reader as an example, a use that would be an unfair advantage would be the screen reader “snapping” the target onto the nearest hostile enemy without your input, in pvp for example. Aside from the “automated gameplay” facet, the instantaneous or near-instantaneous retargeting of enemies can provide a sufficient unfair advantage that it would be bannable.

IMO though, people are making it too hard. It’s a simple ethics question- do you think this object (for lack of better term) gives you a completely unfair advantage over players? No? Use it. Yes? Dont use it. Cant decide? Ask your guild. They cant decide? Ask in LA. Trolls cant figure it out? Ask on reddit. They cant decide? Flip a coin. Coin lands on it’s side and refuses to fall over? Go play the lottery.

I guess I’d just like to see another step:

- Check the whitelist of ok’d features.

There could easily be a whitelist of “ok” addon-features that lives alongside the Rules of Conduct, Naming Rule, Terms of Use, etc documents. This way mod designers and users alike could ensure that they’re staying within the bounds of what’s permitted and what’s not.

Having uncertainty over a practice that can end in a ban due to differing interpretations is a bad situation. The people who are enforcing the rules should be able to tell us how they’re enforcing them.

Launching guild wars 2 is in fact forbidden and enough reason for arenanet to ban you. Not like they’d need a reason anyway.

Gonna play russian roulette with your account, eh? I can’t bring myself to risk it.

Well, I PM’d Gaile a few days ago to see if we could get a feature whitelist to help clear up some of the ambiguities. Let’s hope she kicks it up to the appropriate team and they understand our concerns.

Because some of those mods look really kittening sweet

Wow way to be vague and dodge the question yet again….

“We won’t talk about any specific programs, and if you’re caught using one we don’t like you’re banned”

What about Overwolf? The way it’s used in WvW it’s CLEARLY an advantageous piece of software. But I haven’t heard them crack down on it and I’m pretty sure the devs in WvW last season heard plenty about people using it.

Are people going to wake up one day and be banned for that? What about voice chats in general?

At some point they need really need to say something or at least let us know we’ll get a warning before the full ban hammer hits.

I’ve gotten answers about dual boxing by opening a support ticket. That’s the easiest way to get an answer.

And heard from people in chat that they got banned for using the immersive combat mode because it does give you an advantage and change the gameplay.

One thing they’ve said multiple times is that macros are only okay if it’s one action per key. So technically the macros that play music are against that rule. I would open a support ticket and ask them directly if I ever wanted to use the music playing macros. It doesn’t give an unfair advantage, but a macro that did a skill chain combo by pressing 1 key WOULD definitely be unfair advantage.

Another thing people have been using in WvW that I think they should try and crack down on is the UI change that lets you see the health of gates and walls on the other side of the map. I think that definitely provides an unfair advantage. Used to be you had to scout to get valuable information.

Overwolf is not a mod, it is an overlay application and in the cases for the ones for WvW, use anet’s official API.

You don’t need to run the game client in order to run Overwolf nor to have access to the applications on it, nothing is modified on the game file, it is actually attached to Team Speak.

Besides that, the ones that show’s HP from gates, walls, siege etc, they are all pen and paper, it is the same as you writing it down then passing away for your friends and guilds, if an_ user don’t type the info out there, there will be none, because the app don’t have that kind of access to give anyone some sort of advantage.

Here it is the official statement about Overwolf:

Good call, sorry, very powerful overlay though

I was thinking more along the terms of “no 3rd party programs that give you an advantage” without the addition of “that interact with the GW2 client” my bad.

Mods are not allowed. Full stop. Some overlays are and for some reason macros to play musical instruments (and nothing else), but that’s it.

Incorrect, that was the policy at launch, and it was changed over a year and a half ago. Currently the policy is that no mods are permitted which alter the game code or give an unfair advantage over the base game. This mod overlays a targetting reticule (overlays are premitted) and changes your mouse configuration to hold down your right mouse button for you, however it still relies on the games existing targeting without modification, so it in no way provides an advantage or alters the game code. I know hundred of players that use it, I use it, and no one has ever been banned for it.

It’s fine to use, it make the game way more fun and to be honest it makes no sense that it isn’t a feature. I have been reported for using it literally hundreds of time at this point and I have never even been warned, let alone banned. They do not just ban anyone who is accused of using a mod without investigation. If your account shows no signs of having unfair advantage or code modification, then you are not going to get in trouble.

EDIT: Okay, it is true there is a version which alters the game code by removing UI elements, however you can shut this option off, it even tells you how to do so. And without the removed UI elements it in no way affects the game code and breaks no rules.

My understanding is that it does not alter the game’s code. It interacts with DX9 on a low level (at which point might very well be be outside the game) to tell it to display or not display UI elements.
