Did they change the trait point system while leveling a new character ? If so, can someone explain or link me to what we have to do to get these points.

They condensed 70 trait points to a total of 14.

Unlocking Trait Tiers

Adept trait tier will now unlock at level 30.
Master trait tier will now unlock at level 60.
Grandmaster trait tier will now unlock at level 80.

Acquiring Trait Points
Trait points have been condensed into 14 points (down from 70), each of which is equivalent to the value of 5 old trait points. This means that instead of granting 10 points of each trait-line-specific stat, each trait point will provide 50 points of the trait-line-specific stats. These will be distributed in the following manner:

Level 30—1 Trait Point
Level 36—1 Trait Point
Level 42—1 Trait Point
Level 48—1 Trait Point
Level 54—1 Trait Point
Level 60—1 Trait Point
Level 66—2 Trait Points
Level 72—2 Trait Points
Level 78—2 Trait Points
Level 80—2 Trait Points

Yes, you only get Traits starting at level 30 now. You get 1 point at 30 and then more after that (1 every 6 levels until 66, when you’ll start getting 2 every 6 levels). 1 point is equal to an old 5 points and will unlock a trait skill. They have adjusted the health on mobs level 1-30 to compensate for no traits until 30.

Yes they’ve changed it.

Each point is now worth the equivalent of 5 points – each one you use will unlock either a minor or major trait and give you 5x the stat bonus it used to do.

But to balance that out you get less of them in total and only get 1 every 5 levels.

…I’m not sure you understand.

Oh, rest assured, I do not understand at the moment lol.

Gonna read up right quick.

I’ll see if I can explain in as simple of a manner as possible.

Previously, one level = one trait point = 10 points/1% of a stat. Five trait points = one trait, minor or major.

Now, trait points do not come at every level, but each trait point = 50 points/5% of a stat and one trait point = one trait.

This means that trait points are worth 5x the power they were before… so you only get 1/5 as many.

Your build can stay exactly the same if you are level 80. If you are still leveling, you’ll get traits a little bit slower than before. They start at level 30, for example, not level 10.

In the end, at level 80, though, not much has changed.

That’s a simplification, but hopefully it helps a bit.

I think the new trait system is a good start. For me, with 7 80’s, it doesn’t make that much of a difference. I think for new players to the game, it gives them A LOT more to do.

I’m hoping this means we’ll be getting more traits and more unique challenges over time.

I think the new UI is a bit disorientating, but this new 1 trait = 5 old traits doesn’t really affect me (since you would always put 5 down at a time anyway, unless you were a celestial enthusiast and did the 14-14-14-14-14 build)

I have to say this change has made levelling an alt far more tedious and less enjoyable. I much prefer having 70 points and getting 1 per level. The new system also makes little logical sense mathematically (noone expects to be rewarded every 6th level…).

Once again, the GW1 system was better than both the new and old GW2 system.

I kinda like it. Plus having to unlock all the traits by doing various thinsgs, actually gives me more of a reason to explore and do things than just power level through everything. Im on my 4th alt in the new system and enjoy it.

Honestly, I rather like it.
Like pdavis said above, having to unlock the traits gives me more of a reason to get out and explore and do stuff.
It’s actually pretty cool when you are just running around, doing an event chain or fully mapping out an area or just fighting a boss and you are rewarded a trait unlock when you finish.

I do dislike the fact that you have plenty of useless levels now. Basically between most later levels, there is absolutely no satisfaction in a level up. Even if it was just a really minor thing, being able to spend a trait point for a minor boost made you feel somewhat stronger.

Now level 67 is just the same as level 68 and 69 and 70 and 71. Sure, you get stronger, but they never show you those numbers anyway.

^ completely agree

The trait point condensing wasn’t necessary, but I suppose I can see Anet’s point. However, gaining a level and being rewarded with nothing feels rather lackluster.

Also, I HATE that the trait tiers were pushed back 20 levels each. Now a level 20 has nothing new to do upon leveling. And at 30 you’ve finally unlocked a trait point but it’s not much fun until 36 (!!!!) when you can finally choose a major trait.

Every class is essentially weaker until 80 throughout the entire journey.

Condensing the skill points from 70 to 14 is nice if you are changing your build a lot and experimenting with different things. Having to click the arrows up and down possibly 140 times borders on ridiculous. The system they have now is much more manageable. And across ten characters, I don’t think it really impacted any of my builds.

The new leveling mechanisms are terrible though. I don’t know if they thought that the China market would want something that felt less rewarding and slower, but that’s what they gave them. I’ve only leveled one character to 80 since then and that will probably be my last.

And while I don’t mind the idea of doing something to unlock traits, they didn’t implement it very well. They always use GW1 and the capture of Elite Skills as an analogy, but that doesn’t work. First of all, capturing Elite Skills was for the most part predictable and always achievable. You went to a boss, killed it, and captured its Elite. Sometimes that required you to group up to do a mission, but mostly you could just go out into the wilderness, find the boss and kill it (or find another boss that also carried that skill, which was possible for many Elites). In GW2 however you have to rely on certain events being active or even certain events failing to trigger the next part of the event. That makes capturing traits highly reliant on other people and in some cases completely unachievable solo. That would be bad enough, but in GW1 you really only needed one or two Elites to have a viable character with several options for builds. In GW2, to capture all the traits for one build you have to do seven different tasks to unlock the seven traits you’ll need for a build. Probably more because some traits are situational.

Ultimately its not as good a system. I actually really loved capturing elites in GW1 and that was my first long-term achievements I set out to do. Unlocking achievements feel much more like a chore and I’ve ended up just buying most of them.

You stop getting trait points at level 80. It has always been that way. Instead of 70 though, you now get 14, but since they’re worth what 5 used to be worth, it comes out to the same amount.

What you may be thinking of is Skill Points. You keep earning those each level, even as you “level” as an 80. But trait points always stopped once you hit 80.

This is a necro’d thread by Threa Dar who is having trouble with their traits. The original post died over two months ago. The reason you’re seeing this thread now is because of Threa asking a question, and that should be the reason for a reply now. If after answering Threa you would like to continue the conversation about traits with the OP who had probably forgotten about this thread long ago, go ahead.

Imagine this. You’re at a get together and you talk to a friend about him designing a house. Months later you’re at another get together and someone comes to you and asks you how to go about hiring a contractor, and you turn to your friend and start telling him what you think about the house he designed. Completely ignored the person who brought up the conversation of building houses, and continued a conversation from months ago. Rude, is it not?

Proper forum etiquette.
