Then I remembered the disaster that happened with traits, with them not starting until 30 and not unlocking them all until 80.

I understand handholding to a certain point, but if you’re going to hold off major game mechanics for the first hundred hours of gameplay for each character, then no thanks.

I’ve read about them changing how you unlock them in general, which I don’t mind.

It’s the mindnumbing boring between level 1 and 30 that irks me…and there’s been no mention of that. That, and needing to reach 80 until you can actually play with grandmaster traits is also quite a turnoff.

Play without traits? That’s what I did all the way to 80, then I went back and unlocked only what I needed.

As for holding back traits to level 30, they greatly reduced the time it takes to level from 1 to ~13-15. Under the old system, you needed 5 points per trait, making your first minor trait unlock at level 15. Now it’s 30, but 30-13 = 17. It’s basically the same time-wise.

Builds are a little less critical until you start facing more challenging content like Orr. The rest of the game is pretty easy and not really trait dependant. Yeah, it can make it a bit easier, but it’s not absolutely critical. The right armor, weapons and skill choices will have more of an impact.

That said, not having anything to look forward to at each level does make for a dull leveling experience.

bought a new account on sale.
Two weeks to get to 80, no crafting, Eotm for 3 levels just to get 70-80.
2g for buying traits I did not want to go out and get.
Can’t really see the issue of not playing because of maybe.

Surely you can see how “if you come back now, in two weeks you’ll have access to build defining features” is not the most enticing thing?

I can’t even count the number of games that I can go play right now, and make meaningful decisions immediately after. This game is far from engaging enough, and the decisions are far from meaningful enough, to hide them behind “it only takes two weeks!”.

They either need to put a carrot on the stick or get a shorter stick.

If they where playing before then they can jump in wherever they left off. There are more options at 80 but the game is the same. Traits don’t matter until 80 anyway.

Traits don’t really matter at 80 either. Adding a longer stick just serves to show how small the carrot really is.

Think about what you’re trying to use as an argument, and how it defeats itself.

Builds not mattering for 95% of the game isn’t a good selling point. The doesn’t make the fact that they are only available for 5% of the game better. It just makes it that much worse.

If anything, you’re hurting the little bit of motivation I had to come back.

The whole point of the thread seems to be “i bought the game long ago, and I don’t like, it’s weekend now and I feel like qq a bit”

you don’t like traits and even though they’re getting a rework you’re now making up an argument that builds don’t matter

ANet should accept that as their motto!

For your information, this thread wasn’t posted to make you happy. I don’t care whether you like my opinion or not. This thread was posted as feedback, and letting ANet know why I won’t be coming back, despite them sending me emails asking me to come back.

Thanks for the bumps, though.

But if ANet truly feels that anyone who has an issue with the game should not come back, then I’m sure they will lock this up or delete it. It would be a pretty strange stance to take on their part, with the struggling userbase as it is, but who knows. Maybe it’s time they start taking feedback.

Oh, but you see, they do care.

I care about your opinion as much as you care about mine. Neither of our opinions have any impact on each other at all.

However, I’m sure ANet cares, considering they are releasing an expansion and are desperately trying to get users to come back and spend money.

Because you have half a clue what the userbase is. What a load of hogwash. It’s one thing to have an opinion, completely another to make stuff up. You don’t know how many people are playing this game. You have no clue as to what the population is whether you admit it or not.

And you know, I agree the trait change sucked. 100% agree. I didn’t like it.

I said so multiple times across multiple threads.

But I like the look how what they’re doing so far in Heart of Thorns and that won’t be a long term problem.

Not particularly current feedback though, if you didn’t come back.

In any case, you’ve said the reason you won’t buy HoT is because of the trait system, even though you know those are being reworked in HoT. Seems like you’re not interested in playing again anyway, even if your complaints are fixed. Meaning that you’re just here to complain.

I and many other people agree with you, despite the existence of a few stockholm-syndrome-suffering people on the forums who seem to justify the trait changes by using a “I didn’t really need them anyway!” kinda argument.

They’ve announced a change in the system for HoT, it’s true. We have no details on how that system will work out, and the level of trust you want to put in Anet’s design ability is your own choice.

Till then, keep in mind that if you have any ‘grandfathered’ characters – those created before the trait changes, they will have full access to their traits, without needing to unlock them, at least at the new trait tier unlock levels. It ain’t much but it’s something.

They didn’t completely botch the game as you put it, they made a design choice a lot of people don’t like/agree with. No, I am not buying the expansion specifically for them to fix that.

Im buying the expansion for: The jungle maps, the new class, the new wvw map, the new pvp game mode and hopefully maps, the lore, the masteries, and precursor crafting. The trait fix is a free added bonus~

A lot of classes require certain traits to make builds useful.
Playing a grenade engi without the extra grenade trait is useless.

The problem is: if you want to check out a new class you need to level it to 80, then go buy traits to finally be able to see if its fun in pve.

Thats dumb.

Especially since the current system for utility skills explicitly allows you to unlock what you want, whenever you want.

So half of your character can be unlocked on demand, and the other half is level gated.

Good design.

Thats how the gaming industry works nowadays.

Fanboys defend bad game design or obviously removed features by telling people to buy the DLC that fixes that.

Except….no one is defending it, the thread that was for the trait changes was and still probably is filled with people hating on the decision to change the traits the way they did. They are fixing it with the Heart of thorns release, and those who are already going to buy the expansion for the things i listed will just get it as a bonus if it not available to everyone, and we may get it for free as it would make perfect sense for them to do so.

Really though…it was a horrible decision but at least they are going to fix it, unlike the personal story which is still screwed up.

To reply to OP

Coming back with the current trait system. I agree that the system is flawed or atleast not as fun. I preferred that most of the traits were unlockable by exploring maps 100% instead of buying a manual.

However it’s not as bad as it looks. Many traits can be bought and the leveling time in lower levels is reduced drastically.

I came back around 2 weeks ago and am having a blast because of the expansion hype. Seeing many of my old friends return to the game and seeing our dead guild active and recruiting again (eMoa on Far Shiverpeaks, if anyone was curious :P)

Stuff is going to be great. You can have fun if you set yourself open for it.
