Yeah I saw an ad on Twitch today, first time I have seen it. It had the tag “Lowest Price The Game Has Been Ever” or something like that. It might have to do with making people try the free trial.
To be honest it wouldn’t be a bad idea to go F2P. When GW1 was released there were literally no F2P games in the market. Today there are dozens so it will be harder for GW2 to get new players. The barrier to entry is higher in GW2 than games like Neverwinter/Rift/Tera/SWTOR etc. It isn’t like GW2 is selling tons of boxes anymore.
The moment GW2 goes full F2P is the day I leave the game as I did with SWTOR. Quality is already slipping as it is with content directed towards to cas- erm I mean gem shop to BUY NOW! LIMITED TIME ONLY! BUY BUY BUY!
An enjoyable game with a cash shop is one that offers items to compliment your game. Not steer towards it for basic features.
The game has already become Pay to Win by being able to convert gems to gold to outright purchase “legendaries” that offer the best stats in the game along with being able to change what ever stats you desire at a whim.

Not a one of those games is even close to Guild Wars 2 in quality of design.

I do remember when the game came out everyone was wondering why they are not advertising- so now they are.
Maybe they just have more resources to spend on things like advertising?

From the forums?
I am certainly not seeing it in the game- if anything I see more players.
