So about those giants...
I am not an achievement hunter so I hardly bother. But if they made the undead ones from orr count I think ti would make alot of people happy.
The achievements are meant to be something to do in normal gameplay over time. A long time in some cases (like WvW/PvP achievements). If WvW and PvP have a lot of “long term achievements” I don’t see why PvE couldn’t.
Though I would agree that the slayer category could use changing. I mean, just doing the personal story alone would allow you to finish Zhaitan’s Bane before half of the game’s completed. Not to mention the others filled via dungeons (Inquest, Nightmare Court, Sons of Svanir, Flame Legion, Bandit, and Dredge). Those could use additional tiers.
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.
I think I am somewhere around 65ish giants killed. I do think the number required, considering the scarceness of giants, is too high. Even 250 would take a bit of time to accomplish but at least I would feel it was doable.
I try to get over to Brisban as often as I can to get that giant but rarely see anyone else around to do that one, considering it will spawn multiple giants if you have more than one person present. I am not too sure how many actually know of that one either. I found it out by reading Dulfy.net.
They should drop that one down to a lower number based on the availability of giants to be killed. The other slayer categories have a goodly number you can find to slay in contrast. So they should definitely figure a better ratio for that one than a generic 1000 killed per species. Rarity should count for something.
Like Thirst Slayer – 100,000 drinks….sheesh…took me forever to get to 2500…. Even with Elixir of Heroes counting that one also could be lowered to something that you definitely work to achieve but isn’t so outrageous. Maybe get the slayer with a certain reasonable amount and give a special title/reward for the 100,000.
Reducing the requirement? No. No way.
There has to be a less grindy way to do the achievement. But it should not be making it easier by having to kill less of that enemy.
Instead, when they add the Crystal Desert, they should adkitten y more giants.
And actual giants. With two eyes, and tusks/horns. Not these cyclops posers we have in GW2.
Elona had most of the giants in the game in several spots:
- Crystal Desert. (part of Prophecies, but still Elona)
- The Desolation
- Vabbi
The rest were spread in a few spots of Kryta and the Shiverpeaks.
Remember the Bull Trainer Giants?
Those appeared all over one corner of a map. Lots of them with their huge minotaur pets.
That’s the way to go. Make them the more prominent creature in a new map, once it’s added, like ogres in Fields or Ruin or Centaurs in Harathi Hinterlands.
Same with plants.
GW2 only has three types of plant enemies: Sylvari, Tree Hearts and Husks.
And as enemies, most sylvari and husk count as nightmare court.
Now look at the plant-type enemies in GW1:
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Plant
Where are all the stalkers, and seeds, and thorn wolves, and ibogas and jaracandas and…
As with giants, they should make some more plant type enemies, and when they make new maps, put them there. But unlike giants, they should also sprinkle some plants in the rest of the game. A few Aloe Seeds here following a veteran moss heart and healing it when you attack it, a few Reed Stalkers popping from the reed by a swap…
But reducing the achievement requirement? No. No way. More monsters, same killing.
All the other slayer categories have multiple locations where they can be found in groups. It didn’t even require farming to complete other slayer categories, just play the game over a period of time and explore. (I’ve completed all but giant and plant this way. Plants are also less frequent but I’m halfway there in over a year of play compared to seven giants killed)
Giant slayer is such a massive exception to all the others that I’d assumed there would be more giants added into the game at some point, or LS events with giants for whatever reasoning on occasion. It has been over a year so I’m now assuming this isn’t even something on their list of issues to address, either very low priority indeed or something overlooked. I can think of more non hostile giants (that would meet the slayer requirement) I have encountered when exploring than hostile ones.
(And here’s a good time to mention that Fen’s event/story is quite the gem, very moving and well done. One of the fondest memories I have of exploring was discovering that event. I absolutely love this event and am glad there are friendly giants in the world.)
So please, think of the hostile giants when you’re considering new content or tweaks to existing maps.
A few examples:
Activation of ley lines disturbs and drives giants from currently unexplored areas into known lands.
Sons of Svanir, such as those at Coiled Watch or Svanir’s Dome, ally with a small family of (ice?) giants.
Female giants. I don’t think there are any at all in the game currently?
A giant living near Skrittsburg becomes irate at all the chittering noise as the city grows closer to his formerly hidden cave and has started attacking Skritt, so the King asks you to slay him.
A giant with gastric ambition persuades a few of his kind to band into a small group. They raid farms for cows and other livestock.
A little girl asks you to help her find her doggie, she leads you to a cave that has a giant inside. After killing the giant you notice the bones of a dog and the little girl thanks you then disappears. (spoiler, she was a ghost)
Just a few more giants scattered about when exploring would be very welcome.

The word demand is nowhere in my original post. I’m not demanding anything. I’m bringing attention to a real problem.
I know that there are ways of upscaling a certain event to farm giants, but that is still a very unreasonable way of doing it. I’m sure the majority of the player base will not want to sit in one zone, repeating the same event over and over. It’s just a horrible and boring grind. Never mind that it can be done, it’s how it is done that’s the problem.
The achievement is way too impractical. Given the low number of giants in the game, a reduction to 100 is fair. 1000 is ridiculous.
The fact that you did not use the word “demand” does not mean that this wasn’t a demand.
The OP comes off as extremely demanding, I don’t sense even the slightest bit of constructive criticism.
But that’s not to discredit what you’re saying. I agree, it’s an extremely grindy no-fun achievement. I don’t ever see myself actively focusing on getting the achievement.
Unless, of course, they add more giants.
Achievements > General> Weapon Master > Shield Master would like a word, too.
Since there are several achievements that seem ridiculous, like the thirst slayer achievement, one has to assume that these were purposely placed in the game for one of two reasons:
1. For OCD players that will grind this out whilst spending 10, 000 purchased gems a day on various things.
2. To make a point to players that you will never finish all the achieves in the game no matter how hard you try.
Either way, WAI.
Reducing the requirement? No. No way.

I would definitely agree with you if ANet would add more killable giants in other areas or include ones like risen or but as it stands now, with the so few they allow for the achieve I think this is one achievement they need to rethink or retool for the number because of the resources available to kill. Out of all the slayer achieves the giants have the fewest available so it comes done to a ratio of what is available so time-wise makes this one a very, very long term one to get in relation to all the others.
I loved the Fen story and no way would want to kill him for any achieve…
it’s nearly not possible. if it was 100, it could be ok.
It is possible. Read the dulfy’s guide of slayer achievements. People are in a giant farming guild. They upscale one specific event so that 5 would spawn then kill 4 and fail it. The event respawns around every 5 minutes.
One warning here: Anet has banned people for repeatedly purposefully failing events. The instance I’m think of had some economic implications, but perhaps it’s best to be cautious? .. Especially since it’s now known that people do this.

I wonder what your basis for comparison is…”

Warrior/Engineer/Guardian + ambient = Shield Master

Warrior/Engineer/Guardian + ambient = Shield Master
I gotta try that…it’s one of my last weapon-masters to complete….
And as for giant-slayer, Brisbane wildlands (as others have pointed out) golem quest…you can re-do it infinite times with a group about every 5 mintues or so for 4-6 giants each time….myself and 4 others got a couple hundred giants in an afternoon and had our giant-slayer achievement in a couple weeks of casually working on it.
