WARNING: SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAS NOT PLAYED STORY YET!
PLEASE DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU DON’T WANT ANY SPOILERS!

Sorry guys just wanted to confirm something about this.
So all these while we’ve been killing elder dragons right?
(https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Elder_Dragon)

Main story -> Kill Zhaitan (https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Zhaitan)
H.O.T -> Kill Mordremoth (https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Mordremoth)
and of course there are those dragon-killing side quests;
- Kill Tequatl (https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Tequatl_the_Sunless)-
- Kill Jormag (https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Jormag)
- Kill Shatterer (https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/The_Shatterer)

….. and of course there’s Primodus (https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Primordus) by the end of episode 5. That’s Primodus right? We’re only able to see his kitten JAW. And did Balthazar kill him? I was so focused on the achievement I literally wasn’t paying attention to anything they were saying >_<.

….. then I watch the trailer;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZM0bJekitten=347s

@3:30;
‘Balthazar, he’s building his forces and he seems hell bent on killing Elder Dragons’

So, ummm….. what’s the problem?

You’re misunderstanding some things !

Kill Zhaitan + kill Mordremoth <= ok.

Tequatl is a lesser dragon, Zhaitan’s lieutenant. Same goes for the Shatterer, which is Kralka’s lieutenant. The dragon that is fought in the Shiverpeaks is The claw of Jormag, and not Jormag itself, and it’s also a lieutenant. Those ones don’t count in the six.

Now, we do see Primordius. Big B didn’t kill him, but sucked enough of the dragon’s power to put it back to rest. Same goes for Jormag, as mentionned by Taimi (from Braham) in episode 6.

So, the whole plot is : with 4 dragons out of the field (2 dead, and 2 too weak), only Kralkatorrik and the mysterious sea dragon are left outside. Which means big B will go after one of these, and Kralkatorrik is supposed to dwell in the crystal desert.

The dragons act as sponges for magic, similar to how the bloodstones work. They absorb the magic from the world, which keeps it from running out of control. WE don’t exactly know if its killing them or the bloodstone being destroyed that is causing the current crisis in Tyria, but there’s unbound magic everywhere and ley lines are literally bursting out of the terrain.

Lore suggests that the bloodstone caused it, but the dragons being dead is what is preventing it from being reabsorbed. As soon as Jormag and Primordus became active their first actions was to try and absorb the unbound magic, whereas it would’ve been easily absorbed by Zhaitan and Mordremoth before.

Right now, there’s no place for it to go but to polute Tyria’s atmosphere. There’s no canon explanation for exactly what will happen, but we do know that too much magic is toxic, and drives people crazy (White Mantle). It basically seems to behave like radiation in intense quantities, story lore refers to peoples insides being “all twisted up” and people exposed to high intensity magic throughout the personal story generally do not end doing up well in the long-term.

Ley line energy is specifically stated to be toxic when you pick it up in Orr.

There’s also hints that the planet itself could explode, as one book in the Durmand Priory says that everyone will fall off the world without the dragons.

Also, killing dragons releases their power into other dragons, this is how Mordremoth was able to create undead plant wolves, etc. instead of just having the Sylvari as minions, because he absorbed Zhaitan’s powers. This means that killing all of the dragons will make the final one all but invulnerable, and likely powerful enough to destroy all of Tyria in the blink of an eye.

Keep in mind much of this is speculation backed by lore, not hard facts.

Ok wait, so…..
Big B didn’t kill Primordius, just sucked it’s power.
so technically, Primordius is still ‘alive’ so…..
‘According to taimi, if another ED dies then so does the whole of tyria iirc’ (don’t have to worry about this)

So now…. big B will ‘kill’ Kralkatorrik / Mysterious Sea Dragon?
or will ‘suck its power’ Kralkatorrik / Mysterious Sea Dragon?

If you put your mind into it, you can accomplish anything.

Correction: We never killed (or even seen) Jormag. The World Boss in Frostgorge Sound is the Claw of Jormag, just one of its champions.

That said, yes, we have been killing Elder Dragons up until now, but then we discovered that killing Elder Dragons also actually destroys the world. So now we have to come up with a method of putting them back to sleep without killing them.
However, Balthazar (evil God edition) doesn’t care one bit about the world and wants to kill the Elder Dragons to steal their power for himself. So, afer he failed (thanks to our intervention) to kill both Primordus and Jormag back in episode 5, now he wants to go after Kralkatorrik. Guess who will have to stop him again?

We don’t see Jormag at all. In episode 6, Taimi states she got a letter from Braham telling there was an issue with Jormag, that happens to be the same that what we saw with Primordius, which was predictable since the machine used in episode 5 was supposed to affect both of them the same way.

As for big B, he’ll probably suck the dragons dry from their powers. In a nutshell : kill them.

I assume up till now we don’t know why Big B wants all to suck all the dragon powers? (Unless he needs all of it to overthrow all the other Gods).

So up ‘till now, Big B has successfully suck all the dragon powers.
Just not so much up to the point it ’kills’ those dragons because of our help?

The only thing we know about Big B’s whereabouts is : he said “they wanted to kill my light, but know, they’re gonna see me”, or something in that meaning. We have know clue who the they may refer to.

As for know, we know B sucked :

  • A whole bloodstone’s power (episode 1, impersonating Lazarus)
  • Part of Jormag’s power
  • Part of Primordius’ power

He didn’t drain Zhaitan or Mordremoth, and cannot, because those dragon’s magic is now flowing wildly in Tyria as “unbound magic”.

Well, at this point, the topic should be moved in the lore section of the forum.

I’m guessing things wouldn’t be that easy for Big B. After all, he was needing Taimi’s machine for Jormag/Primordius. It may just have been to have 2 dragons with one stone, but it may also help him harvest the magic… Not sure.
Anyway, he may also need to kill the dragon himself to get the energy. Like, if it’s spread across the whole Tyria, he wouldn’t be able to collect as much as if the whole energy was just standing in front of him.

Just guessing…

You know, it isn’t really clear.

In the fight where you are trying to stop Balthazar from sucking primordus dry, Taimi indicates that what Balthazar is doing would kill Primordus, which is exactly what we do not want at this point. And in the end we basically stop Balthazar from taking the last little bit necessary to kill Primordus, and Primordus slithers off and back to sleep.

And here, is where it isn’t clear what the heck our character is doing.

The reason we don’t want Primordus to die, is that the resulting release of magic would destroy the world, but Balthazar absorbed the magic, preventing said cataclysmic release. And since that was exactly what Balthazar planned from the beginning, we can assume that would have happened just the same if we hadn’t prevented Primordus’ death. So we basically just saved an elder dragon, for absolutely no reason.

And finally, while Balthazar certainly isn’t a good guy, he’s not actively trying to destroy us or the world so far as we know, he just doesn’t give a crap about mortal life. For all we know, we could just stay out of his way, let him kill all the dragons, and nothing bad would happen, or at the very least the world would survive him, while it won’t survive the dragons. Our character is acting based on giant unfounded assumptions about Balthazars motivations.

Furthermore, even if Balthazars intentions are to destroy the world, a small group of largely unremarkable shmucks have killed and/or imprisoned three different Gods before him. Killing just two of the dragons took the largest and most advanced military alliance in the history of the world, and was still only accomplished at a massive cost of lives.

Even with the power of several dragons absorbed, Balthazar would be significantly easier to deal with than the Dragons themselves. Let him kill/absorb the dragons then we can ship him off to be Dhuums roommate in the underworld if we need to.

……Balthazar is a GOD. Do you really think it would be easier to handle him WITH every Elder Dragon’s powers than just trying to handle the Dragons themselves?

The Elder Dragons have been pushed back before, but the huge point of the Personal Story is learning that we have absolutely no idea how it was done.

People ask stuff that’s easily explained [and in some cases, explained constantly] in-game. Of course we didn’t allow a kittenED OFF —-—>GOD<——- to continue fueling himself with the Dragons’ power, we can barely handle 1 Dragon, let alone the God of War infused with draconic energies from at least 2 Dragons [Primordus and Jormag].

Two of his brothers had their kitten handed to them and their godhood stolen, at the height of their power, by a guardcaptain, and someone so unremarkable and innocuous there is no record of him existing prior to his ascent.

Is there a finite amount of magic in Tyria? Is it just recycled in and out of Elder Dragons? Or do they use some and then capture and store new magic that is created over time? If magic is not finite, then killing all the Elder Dragons would be an issue, eventually. Unless, of course, one or more Gods could be persuaded to take the Elder Dragons’ role of keeping magic in check.

If Balthazar was full of magic from perished Elder Dragons, would said magic be, once again, released upon his death? Can magic be destroyed by killing its vessel?

I imagine the implication with Aurene is that she’ll replace one of the Elder Dragons.

And no, killing the vessel doesn’t destroy the magic, as shown by Mordremoth having Zhaitan’s death magic and infusing his own creatures with it. We can assume that the other Dragons now have both Death and Plant magic.

You know, it isn’t really clear.

Considering the amount of story holes around everything involving Balthazar, I think it’s safe to say that we need to stop him because “omg look over there Elona! Quick players, be distracted!”

Frankly that what it comes down to. Somewhere early in LS3 development managers must have decided that it is time to go full on “Do everything the players ask for!”-mode (sounds good, but frequently can cause as much damage as it helps, because we players are good at saying what we dislike, not what we like), and hence by LS5 the old story was entirely thrown out of the window and replaced with human meta pandering.

As is often the case in the real world, sometimes the “cure” is worse than the “disease”. In this case, we were doing what we thought was right, slaying elder dragons. With the big Z and big M, they were both actively trying to use their minions to destroy Tyria, so they had to be stopped.

But as Newton said, “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.”…. in this case, the downside to elder dragons dying is the huge amount of magical energy that is released, and fortunately Taimi figures this out before we “The Commander” makes a terrible mistake.

I think changing our focus as players is a great way to keep us engaged in the story. After all, if each expansion is just about killing the next elder dragon, it would grow old. A change up is very welcome and I’m looking forward to what awaits us in the desert.
