So does everything have a staff now?
Yep were all staff now “smirks”
It should have been (insert weapon here)
I always wonder why people resort to sensationalism in their posts, by making purely false statements like “Thief has no range” or such.
We actually have a perfect split between ranged and melee options.
Ranged: Shortbow. Pistol main hand. Pistol offhand. Harpoon gun(underwater).
Melee: Sword main hand. Dagger Main hand. Dagger offhand. Spear (underwater).
The only issue is that one of our ranged options (pistol) could really use a buff. But that’s a balance issue, more than a “we need a new ranged weapon!” issue.
I do however, agree on the point that the rifle is very underutilized as a weapon in this game. It would be nice if they gave it to some class as an extra weapon. I am, however, happier as a thief to get a staff than a rifle. I think a melee staff could be a cool addition and I can see how it would thematically fit the class. I’d rather have a staff with flashy looking acrobatic skills that might actually give us a new way to play in melee that might not be so reliant on stealth than just another pew, pew, pew weapon.

Ranged: Longbow. Pistol main hand. Pistol offhand. Harpoon gun(underwater).
Please show me where in the gem shop that I can buy access to longbows for my thief.
Nothing wrong with staffs! I love staff on my warrior, but it comes nowhere near my staff engineer… Oh wait not all classes have staff yet!
Don’t worry future specialisations can fix that. Brawler for Warriors perhaps? Maybe alchemist for engineers (since they were suppose to fit both engineer and alchemist tropes but so far have been largely engineer).
No but almost everything has a greatsword.

Sorry, meant to type shortbow. I will correct my post. XD
yeah, the staff was an interesting choice for us thieving kittens. Not saying i’m not interested in staff, but as far as melee staff goes (ranger is supposed to be more magic i hear?), it seems odd 2 classes would get the same play style. Then again it could be completely different than the Rev but since shiro, it seems there’s too many gameplay similarities between thief and rev. Personally, i didn’t care which weapon we got. I’m more interested in the added utility skills but rifle did make a bit more sense. And no, pistol isn’t really viable and neither is the shortbow for great damage. It’s good damage but everyone just takes it for the blasts and blink.
Staff theif??? Really? Seems a missed opportunity. Thief has no range
Thief has plenty of range. F1 is range. S/x2 and D/P3 is range. Infiltrator’s Signet is range. Everyone uses those. Thief also evades and blinds while attacking in melee.

Except none of those are ranged combat. Those are all ways thief blinks into melee combat. Pistols and Shortbow are our only ones but neither are really viable. Pistols is close but they lost any/all AoE capabilities during the trait overhaul outside of a Fire Rune or something desperate like that. Pistols is still okay as single target but single target isn’t as effective in PvE as it might be in PvP or something. Bow is okay but the only real damage skill 2 is slow as hell at full range and pointless trying to use it as anything other than another melee range blast.
Staff theif??? Really? Seems a missed opportunity. Thief has no MAXIMUM range and only 2 classes use rifle. Why anyone would bother creatign the predator is beyond me seeing as Engies use their kits mostly and rifle warriors are hated more than lb Rangers.
Some very odd design choices.
Fixed that for you.^^
From a RP point of view, it indeed seems a little bit odd to give a stealthy type of class a big, unwieldy staff.
Personally I think it would be a nightmare to make thief rifle balanced for PvP without making it shortbow 2.0 or a slightly watered-down version of warrior rifle, to offset the advantage stealth would give.

To be fair, rangers can achieve stealth with a 1500 range weapon, and mesmers can also use it as well, so I don’t see why stealth + long range is seen as something that would be out of the question when it’s already present as an option on some classes.
Hell, even guardians will be able to use stealth + long range in the expansion, technically speaking.
I pointed this out in LA mapchat a few hours ago. Literally every profession will be able to have a staff (including elite specs) except for Warrior and Engineer.
Warrior and Engineer are the only two that can use Rifles.
Coincidence? I think not!
Elementalist and engineer are the only two that cannot use greatswords.
Illuminati at work?

Thieves can’t use greatswords too.

And eles can use fiery greatsword. Though I,m not sure if it counts. XD

But to that effect every class could use axes, shields, bows, greatswords and hammers, so I don’t think it really counts.
7 classes can use staff and in the future it will be 8 classes as the Warrior will be forced into it eventually. Simply put the Warr had access to the most weapons at launch and with this elite spec process of tying classes to new weapons the limit to that system is the amount of weapons the Warrior has left to obtain. So the cap is probably when the war simply has no new weapons left for the system.
Rifle would make more sense since only 2 classes can use it which does kitten up the game a bit. Who wants predator and we can even use this to guess the three legends at launch as 7 staff, 6 sword, 6 shield, and 6 GS classes exist and all the others aside water are only available to a few classes. Thus they will get special treatment and the first three legends are probably Staff, Shield, and Sword from a logical standpoint since the have the broadest reach fill two, main, and off hand slots and while another GS is possible we have three currently.
I wish they’d spread out the lesser used weapons a bit more as I’m sure they like the underwater weapons which are overlooked for another reason will be left behind in the long run.
No but almost everything has a greatsword.
I was about to say shield , mesmer is the new guy on it, but then we have warrior and engies, would make sense also in future guardians to have one :P.
While generally I’m interested in what they can do with each weapon on each class, I mean come on thief greatsword would have to be fascinating, we don’t just want to homogenize all the classes to be the same thing.
So while I’m not in the “thief shouldn’t get rifle” crowd, I do think that if thief gets rifle it should not extend the thief’s max range in any way shape or form.
There is absolutely no evidence to support that it would.” -AnthonyOrdon
Want a land-spear
Neither warrior or engineer have access to staves, as yet. Though, we’ll probably see them in future elite specs.
Sword is another one that has made it into almost every class as well. Engi, Ele, and Necro just need to join the party. But, again, likely in future elite specs.
We’ve seen a new utility type (rage) in this set of elites, I am hoping to see new terrestrial weapon types in the next ones.
On the one hand, it would kinda make sense for Thieves to have the Rifle as part of a Sniper specialization.
On the other hand, Thieves already have some of the nastiest burst in the game, so it makes sense to limit their long-range options. It’s good for professions to have gaps in their toolkits. It gives the balance team something to work with.
