So how did you do it Anet?
I doubt they’re going to want to be too specific, lest that give potential attackers information they need to take them down more effectively.
But indeed, however they handled it, they handled it well.

So how did you counter it?
Colin Johanson’s smile made the hackers rethink their decision :P

One of the interns happened to be standing next to the “reset” button at the right time.
I have always been impressed with ANet’s attention to infrastructure. The hot patching is really an achievement in my opinion – it’s hard to imagine going back to a game with a regularly scheduled maintenance day. I imagine that their architecture was designed to be robust and handle all sorts of stresses.
The company I work for actually pays two different third parties to be on-call in the event of DDOS attacks and they filter the traffic to keep us up although at maybe a lower capacity than usual. We’re in financial services though, so the stakes are a bit higher if we’re inaccessible.

Best i can tell their setup is this:
login server(s?) -> any number of instance servers -> character status database server(s?).
Once you’re past the login server, your traffic seems to go directly to your instance server. And each time you cross between zones, you get moved to a new server (either one of the permanent ones for your world’s zones, or one spun up for load balancing instances). All this thanks to the character database being separate and shared.
May they better succeed in their next attempt.
Don’t support the Gem Shop, it’s that easy.
They offered the hacker some free gems.
