So much for no tanks in this game
It depends. If you lots of damage, you’ll get targeted as well. My engineer ends up pulling the boss quite a bit because of my grenades and bomb kit.
Maybe you’re just really pretty?
But no, there’s no real tanks in the game. The whole idea of tanking is that you soak up damage while a squishy heals you. Everyone will draw aggro and you’ve got to move.
I have no idea why they flock to you though.
Going by the GW1 pattern it was the lowest life/armor they were going for, I doubt it’s the toughness trait that attracts monsters. Are you a Guardian with low life? I did notice my warrior is a common target as well, but then again my thief is too so I just figured the AI hates me.
well you know they are attacking you so use it to your parties advantage, kyte well my friend!
And while you’re kiting you’re not doing damage so say goodbye to your rewards.
By the way, it’s not just about who does the most damage and has the lowest health. Rangers are unlikely to pull aggro off their bear even in melee even though they’re much squishier.
And while you’re kiting you’re not doing damage so say goodbye to your rewards.
So long as you at least do what? 5% of the damage to the mob? you’ll get reward just the same as if you killed it yourself.
And while you’re kiting you’re not doing damage so say goodbye to your rewards.
Kyting assumes you have the ability to hit them as you evade. You seem to be talking about running away.
You’ll do less damage than everyone else who just stands there and mashes their buttons.
Unless you’re an engineer with the stupid bomb kit.
you can do just fine damage wise when kiting. The game was designed with kiting as a primary playstyle. Even my guardian using the slow ball of small death sceptre can dish out pretty good damage over time. it’s real crap for burst or spike of any kind though and those “slow death balls” have a tendency to miss movign mobs…. a lot.
Kite Wars 2.
Where more than half of the available weapons and skills are melee but you will hardly use them. Where thief turn into engineers, warriors turn into rangers, guardians turn into mesmer. Where heavy armor is paper, medium armor is tissue paper and light armor is practically naked.
^ Eh? I’m a melee mesmer and I can do just fine in melee range. o.o
Bookah Protector – Asura Guardian | Trapped Spirit – Asura Necromancer
melee…mesmer…
let me sink that in.
I use a 1h sword on my mesmer, but it is far from my main weapon.
I look at situations like that as an opportunity. Maybe they target you, but, on the other hand they’re NOT targeting your party members. Run around in circle and let him try to hit your back, use dodge and speed abilities as needed and let your party members take him out with ranged. Even if your unable to attack doesn’t mean your not a valued member of the party. HTH.
not to mention that your party members should be using knockback, crippling etc moves on the boss as well. So if you need some distance, it shouldn’t be hard to get.
I rather have kite wars 2 than “World of Warcraft: Stand and Slash”
have 2867 armor i can 100% agree with this, in EVERY fight i am in with other players, even if i show up late the monster(s) ALWAYS change to target me, even in massive like 30+ player events
They always attack on me too, but my armor is nothing to boast about. Average for my level i guess. Everyone else gets ignored. I could be standing a good distance away minding my own business while someone else attacks something. It will ignore them and attack me. It could be because im a guardian, but then again i still get attacked even if other guardians are near. I still haven’t figured out why that happens.
First of all I don’t know what you are doing if this is true but from what I have seen aggro generally ends up falling on whomever did the most damage to that mob, not always but almost always. If u are rly stacking toughness then you are probably not doing the highest damage, especially if u are forced to dodge and run away. I feel u may be exaggerating but I don’t know.
Second of all anyone can be the tank, that’s the beauty of this system. Pretty much every class I have tried to test this at least in PvP and it became very apparent very soon that you can build every class in a style that is either capable of absorbing or evading HEAPS of damage, just as long as you know your damage output wont be nearly as good at the same time. Even on my mesmer I tried a funky build that can give him almost 15 seconds of stealth time back to back so surviving or running away is a breeze in almost every situation but again his damage was pretty average while running around trying this out but I am keen to try more in dungeons as I level.
One way of tanking for example is say, get a thief (and again most classes can do this in some way or another) and build up his health and toughness, give him evasive skills, run in and simply survive mobs as long as you can while your group picks them off one by one. Now that is fun! and it is only one of many options, I think it’s a lot more fun than the system we get stuck with in most MMOs where the dedicated healer sits there and watches bars most of the time, and the rest (tank and dps) just click their buttons in a rotation that gives them the best damage/survivability output. Sure most MMOs realized this and started giving bosses more cool environment attacks that u have to move out of the way of, but it didnt change the fact that the remaining 90% of the time you are still just following those rules I pointed out on repeat over and over again…

Having experienced this myself i can tell you its no joke. For a long while i thought maybe my character was bugged but maybe toughness/armor/vitality also plays a part in attracting aggro in GW2. It seems logical. But i suppose only the devs can answer that for sure. I may just have a bugged character.

Yeah that would certainly explain OP because to me the aggro in game feels very logical and natural, and can be manipulated in many ways to achieve victory in a group, it’s fun.
AI hates my mesmer because of of how often confuse will pop damage on them along with everything else.

Lol I like this post. I do feel the desire, though, to point out that any melee-capable class that feels forced to range is doing it wrong. Dodging is neat and running away when you can’t take the damage is always a good idea Blocking and absorbing abilities are great for these hectic moments. Here’s hoping we get the option to zoom out even further soon so we can see deadly red circles during graphically chaotic moments.
As for the OP: The game is still new and there are a bunch of bugs. It will be a while before the game runs as smoothly as one would like. Mob AI is pretty buggered right now, not just for bosses.

I love being a tank in a dungeon. Plus with the mechanics in this game, you can tank a ranged boss, or melee, and go and stand near some afk party members, or players that are begin obnoxious and get them killed, while you protect the others
They’ll soon learn not to do it again.
I have 2 characters that been to dungeons. A warrior and a ranger. My warrior has high amounts of toughness and HP and has a hard time holding aggro. My Ranger just gets it all the time no matter what he is doing all bosses will come for my ranger. My ranger traits are focused on Power, Toughness then Vit. Something about my ranger attracts all bosses to him to the point where i was literally running around a single room with the Cave troll chasing me for the entire 10mins my party was shooting at him in AC. The graveling breeder near the spike traps decided i was a better target then anyone else and always came for me first. And i cant tell you enough how those oozes surronded my turrent during the fight against the Ghost Eater. The Oozes literally made a horde around me wierdly enough didnt attack me while on the turrent all i had was these oozes surronding me where ever i went. When i went off the turrent oozes followed me and so did the ghost eater when i started shooting at him.
[GWAM] and [LUST]
Mess with the best, die like the rest.
the shield thing on the wiki would make since enough to me, i use a shield and almost everyone in this games uses something that isnt a shield
Seems to me that a lot of people just dunno how to handle being attacked by the mob. There’s been times where I’m the focus of the mob for an entire boss fight, and other times not at all.
It happens to all of us. We just don’t make a big deal out of it.
