…near me, and I decided to alt tab out and re-type what they were saying into Google Translate, and it was kinda fun getting to see the conversation. Some of it was broken, as I’m sure they were missing letters here and there and mistyping things as we all do, but it was understandable.

So that got me wondering: Why isn’t there an option to turn that on?

As Google has with everything, I’m sure there’s an API for it, and the burden could ‘totally’ be put on the client side.

Eh, just a thought.

Has been a hope of mine for a while now. Still don’t think it is cost effective or data efficient (need to go from game server to translate server and back) to be worth while yet. As I said though there is always hope.

It’s an interesting idea, but I don’t think they’d risk causing misunderstandings due to bad translations.

Also, I’m reminded of a controversy early on in which one guild (I think it was Korean?) required all members to hold guild conversations in their particular language, and specifically to hold all such guild conversations in map chat.
The idea being, we’re having a conversation and you aren’t a part of it, neener neener.
So, oddly enough, there are people who speak those other languages because they know or want most people to not be able to understand them.
And they would likely complain.
I dunno, I can only shake my head at the things people hold over each other.

yea, as much as people would like this, it is a burden on Anet to not only implement something already available to all players, butto be responsible for what gets translated into what, possibly causing many an arguement due to mistranslations… I think you will have to just keep googling it bud.

I think they would need to sign some sort of deal with Google to do it, I believe the world will slowly go this way, Google being integrated into EVERYTHING. Its translation is good and gets better every time its used, I’ve seen it understand things like “raining cats and dogs” from speech and translate appropriately – its very impressive.

Though you do wonder what will happen when it decides it wants its own country, army and human slave camps – will our governments be able to say “no”? But thats a problem for another day, all praise to the machine spirit of earth.

Well, that’s why I was saying to code it so the client is responsible for it. You can turn it on, but ‘you’ might end up taking a hit. I wouldn’t want to put the burden on the server. I’m not sure how the chat works now, I’m assuming it’s some sort of periodic poll from the client? Even if it was a push, the client would have an opportunity to translate it before throwing it into the box?

But it’s not really ‘readily available’, and that’s the problem. I was having to re-type everything.

Oh well, it was just a thought. It was kinda fun to do, but hard to keep up re-typing, especially since I wasn’t familiar with the words.

Google changed their API awhile back. It used to be free to use the API but now there is a fee.

How about an app that also chats for you? And while we are at it, an app to do your dailies, maybe for a couple of gems.

Maybe just learn spanish.

think this sounds like a fun idea , but the problem is , the lack of nuances , because the automatic translation is not yet up to par , there is a possibility that lead to that people will be angry . As I Annette is only this , not think it and want to take responsibility for it to leave it without whatever resources mention that it is impossible to decide to work on Google just like one would take Hmm

Well, actually that wasn’t that far off.

Ultima Online had an in game auto-translate option. It wasn’t great, but it was good enough that you could group with people typing in another language, and be semi-coordinated. I thought it was a great feature, as long as you flag the translated text as translated so people understand there could be inaccuracies.

The game should translate everything you write into your respective race language instead. No more English or German or Spanish, just Asuran, Charr etc and you have to spend years learning them until you finally understand each other.

Or pay $50 for the expansion that give you Common mastery of course.
