Since ANet decided for this recent event that they would tie more rewards to winning games rather than just playing, there have been some complaints about winning being “hard” or “luck-based”. There’s some truth in that; poor teammates can be a real drag on success. But, I believe that these complaints are chiefly coming from people who suck at games, because people who are good understand how much influence they alone can have in a match. I also believe that many people who are bad at games don’t understand how bad they are or why what they are doing isn’t good enough, and that some of those people could learn to become really good if only they could see the perspective of someone else who is already good.

For those of you who fall into this last category, wanting to get better but not knowing how, here is a video for you - a four-minute video with closed caption commentary (if you turn it on) of the thought process of someone scoring 20+ points in Dragon Ball. This isn’t how all of my matches go, but this attitude and playstyle is what allows me to win just about every match I play. It only takes me about one hour to get through one rep of the reward track, or about a half hour for the wins daily.

Some time in the next week, I may also put together a series of videos showing a whole rep of the reward track to provide a more complete view of what playing so many matches in a row is like, sorta like what I did for the Dragon Bash.

Edit: I just finished recording, editing, and uploading one rep of ten wins, so you can see what this active playstyle looks like over a set of games by checking out this playlist.

You know that skill that is supposed to reflect fireballs? I was killed while that was still up. The kick always misses. About 75% of my attacks miss, regardless of how close an opponent is. I can’t target enemies that are right in front of me and are usually the sole person in front of me.

Basically, I don’t see how any amount of skill is going to counter mechanics that flat out don’t work.

Basically, I don’t see how any amount of skill is going to counter mechanics that flat out don’t work.

  • The reflect only bounces your shots once, so if you are getting attacked by someone else with a shield up, their shot bounces off yours, bounces off theirs, and goes through to hit you. The bomb has a large enough radius to hit people inside the shield without being reflected by landing close to it. The animation lasts longer than the actual effect.
  • The kick has a very short range.
  • You aren’t training your targets properly to compensate for automatic projectile motion tracking or don’t have the fast sphere upgrade.
  • You have bad camera control.

The mechanics are the way they are. Part of getting good at a game anything is mastering the mechanics. Even if you think the mechanics are broken, saying that is just a bad excuse to not get better. You can learn and use broken mechanics like any others.

and, besides the “omglookatmeimsoawesome” part, your point is….?

Better to just quit a losing match early on and roll until u get into a team with pro players to carry you.

Its a win-win all around. If the team sucks, the match ends early for the team and saves everyone time. If you suck, you don’t drag the team down.

a four-minute video with closed caption commentary (if you turn it on) of the thought process of someone scoring 20+ points in Dragon Ball.

This is pretty much exactly how I play and I am always the top player on my team, with 16 or so kills and an estimated win ratio of more than 90%. I’ve never reached 20 kills in a single match, however. I also run with a Commander tag up so that my teammates know where I am without looking at the map.

There are a few things that you don’t mention you are doing, but you are doing:

  • Jumping to make sure your attacks aren’t Obstructed. Jumping helps maximize both your #1 and #2 skills by avoiding obstructions.
  • Setting up skill #1 to auto-attack at the start of the match. Your video starts just shy of you doing this, but it’s worth noting that it assists greatly with target tracking and overall DPS due to better handling of position lag and a faster response from your character when you are turning your camera a lot.
  • Positioning yourself behind your opponent. Since the primary attack skill can only shoot forward, being behind your opponent as often as possible means that they are doing no (or very little) damage to you.

After getting 100 wins, I decided to focus on the Dragon Gaze achievement. This means playing riskier and allowing my targets to engage with me before killing them (if they die to the kick, the Interrupt doesn’t count).

Personally, I play almost exactly the way the OP plays and I’ve come into losing games and personally turned them around. Having one really strong player on your team can turn the tide in your favor, especially if you can deliberately take advantage of the Quad damage to really push your team over the tipping point. This playstyle is very effective.

Thanks for pointing these other things out. I didn’t think I had highlighted everything I was doing in the video, and there certainly isn’t enough in one four-minute match to cover everything that ought be considered.

I should add though, I don’t find auto-attack to be that helpful. In my experience, auto-attack doesn’t engage while in mid-air, but you can still use balls and bombs while airborne. I’ve grown a habit instead of spam pressing the 1 key when I engage targets, which you can see in the video by how many times the skill flickers.

As in, do not deviate, run near other players. If enemies start to spread out you’ll quickly kill off everyone as it’ll be constant 2 or 3 v 1.

^ This. While there is definitely room with which skilled players can dominate in 1v1’s or even 1v2, they cannot stand against 3 or 4 enemy players mobbing them down. You’ll notice in the video that the OP was almost always with at least 1 or 2 of his teammates. The one time he died around the 2:50 mark was because all of his team was either dead or spread out, rendering him vulnerable to an attack by 2 enemies. If your team is smart enough to stick together at all times and constantly focus down called targets, you will almost certainly win by a landslide.

That said, the OP is definitely one of the better players I’ve seen, and I /salute him for his score. It’s extremely impressive.

Dargon ball arena is the worst activity in this game, it should never have been implemented, so many bugs and things like that, that makes it impossble to well on a constant basis, the obstructed also works differently on different height characters, Aegis on guardians make guardians have an advantage, it’s all in all just very poorly made, it would have been fun if not for all those annoying bugs/problems that Dragon ball have. and yes i do well… but it’s still frustrating when some of your skills does not work as it should, or you get ostructed by a wall, and yet get hit by another person at the exact same location, in same area.

The daily win vs daily participation should also change, 5 wins but only 2 participate?, ridicolous when there are so many bad players.

Regardless, the video shows his team doing well…. it would be different if the two teams were very close in total score…. and when you looked at the score breakdown 90% of the points on his team were all him.
THAT would be carrying.

He is on a good team.

Keep in mind there are no assists awarded in this gametype and all enemies that have been tagged that die award personal score to all players that have tagged.

You can see in the video that the team is sticking together and working as a team…. and claiming you carried because you had the best personal score is nonsense.

Whoa really? I have yet to miss a kick (unless they dodge), I’ve yet to be killed in that reflect bubble thing, and I’m hitting people with my #1 skill consistently, especially when they are in front of me. Now when they are further away and moving sideways you will likely miss without the upgraded #1 skill. I highly suggest everyone go for that one early because it really does make a huge difference. Projectile speed is so much faster.

It’s definitely what you want to do if you can’t recover a win, but it’s not a win-win. If a losing team clears out, the winning team doesn’t have anyone to score off of anymore. The bad case after that is that some player from the winning team has to be autobalanced into the losing team. The worst case is if the winning team’s score is so high that autobalance never kicks in and the matchmaker refuses to send any more players in, effectively demanding the winning team stay 20+ minutes to receive credit for their win.

Dargon ball arena is the worst activity in this game

Crab Toss and Lunatic Inquisition are easily worse.

That was such awfull opponents you had.

Not the worst I’ve seen, by far (see attached). In any case, what are bad opponents other than an opportunity to win faster or bigger?

I’ve certainly been on top in enough 4*0 – 500 struggles to be able to point myself out as the lynchpin to my team’s success (see attached). This video just wasn’t one of those cases. Also, what one video doesn’t show is how over a set of games, other players can do well or do poorly based on whether they’re on my team or not. That’s because part of my job is not only playing well but enabling my teammates to play well. That’s where things come into play like calling targets to focus the team on one thing or moving and fighting alongside others. To frame the final scoreboard in another way, no teammate of mine scored any more than 4 kills without some form of direct help from me.

That kick has a HUGE aftercast that is NOT mentioned in skill description, making it hit ONLY if you have decent latency.

How I know this?

One account EU → kick hits about everytime
Another account US → kick misses about 90% of the time

Reminds you of something? YES. Same issues after release with warrior GS 5 skill, fixed when? Oh yes… about 1 year after release, and only fixed for objects recently.

When you look at your team’s score and your lowest player’s score beats the enemy team’s top player’s score. It was a team effort.

If you pvp enough you will recognize this.

If the enemy team is full of leavers, you can’t measure skill for any of the players based on personal scoring.

There are also no assists in this game, and if you watch the right side of the screen in the vid, almost half of your “kills” are actually assists. …and only three (maybe four) of the “kills” you are awarded were against players who were A ) not fighting against you AND a teammate. B ) not already with low hp from being in a fight with a teammate earlier.

That means three times in your entire video did you actually beat someone without having one or more teammates participating actively (or having previously weakened your opponent).

…. at 50 seconds for example you join a 3v3 fight making it a 4v3, your team with the upper hand…. and two of your teammates die… you and another live and emerge victorious.

Did you carry? no.

Team fight – you participated. (if anything I’d say you tagged before they died… but you were there just the same)

When the fourth enemy player finally shows up late to the party and you beat him 1v1. Yes…. you are better than him. You get the kill. One of three kills you earn on your own.

If you were taking on 2 or 3 foes at a time alone….. totally carrying.

Getting three(4?) kills, in three different 1v1’s is not carrying.

I’m not saying you are not a good player…. I’m also not saying you are not the mvp on these teams…. What I’m saying is you aren’t carrying by any means… and just because you are good at tagging foes before they die, or finishing off opponents who are already low does not imply you are doing all the work yourself.

you are not carrying

If anything you are a good player, which makes it easier to get one or two more good players on the same team and completely destroy a team of kids who are not good.

Also, we have no idea who any of these other players are, and how skilled/unskilled they are and they might as well have been a team of old grandmas trying to play the game…. bottom line is we don’t know.

I figured some people would rather have a resource for improving themselves to overcome a challenge instead of spending all their time complaining about it, but that’s not for everyone.

Your team was also very smart in grouping up. Most dragon ball games don’t have teams as coordinated as yours so getting a lot of the kills when you had 2-3people wailing on the same target doesn’t say too much to me. You didn’t carry that, your teamwork did. Your team was very good, and performed well, as well as yourself. You alone however, did not “carry”.

You’re like the guy in LoL that gets a 7/0/7 kda and thinks you carried with an assassin, while the 2/5 guy is the one actually taking down the base and adding gold value to the entire team as well as map pressure. Everyone took part in doing what was needed to win, no one person carried.

Now if everyone watches this video, groups up, and learns to train, maybe it will be useful but other than that you’re not showing much.

I have 2-3 hours in the evening to play. I could be exploring, doing dungeons, fighting in a zerg even, or I could be stuck in a “sewers had a baby with Chinatown” room trying to grind out ten wins… No thanks… even if it IS ridiculously profitable nowadays.

Just put up a recording of a set of games so that people can observe this playstyle over a string of games rather than just one match. The link is at the end of the OP.

The teams in the last couple days haven’t made for great material. Once the ball gets rolling of one team over another, people on the losing team seem to just cycle out with new entrants and make it hard to have interesting or fair matches. Will probably record another set some time, but not before Tuesday.

No i read it right. I read the whole thing. You’re just incapable of understanding, and comprehending the fallacious arguments you are making and i sincerely hope you learn a bit about data analysis before you do any type of research.

You can’t pick and choose your data to make you look good. Bad games WILL happen, and dc’s and leavers are are a part of that, no matter what. It doesn’t matter if you like it or not, or if it wasn’t meant to be a part of it. So showing only your “good” games is selective data, saying that people can “carry” only in “good” games in just wrong.

That’s saying you can be 75% good in 30% of your games.

You should show how you perform in the bad games too. Then we would have more to go off of as well. If you are truly showing people that they can carry well as well, they should have no problems doing ok in a “losing” game or evening out the field.

So what do you do? Do you hop from “losing” game till you get a game that favors your odds as well? This again would be “selective” data.

Now again, as others have said, i’m not denying you didn’t play well. There are also legitimate problems with the game as well.

Excellent play. But I don’t PvP because I can’t do that lol. The more GW2 asks me to do that, the less I will play GW2 unfortunately.

Here’s what carrying looks like (and yes it was 5 vs 5, everyone on the other team left after). Notice both team players had similar points outside of me.

Lol yeah, i had a game where the enemy team had 0 leavers, and literally scored 0 points. It was 500 to 0, because our team was very well coordinated

I’ve won 500 to 0 a few times. I’ve also had many games where I won with the opposite team having bellow 100. Although I’d have over 15 or even 20 points in these games, I wasn’t carrying my team, we were just dominating the opposing team and scoring points was easy.

In this screenshot I posted, I can guarantee if I only had 8 points like the rest of my team, we’d have lost. When I joined the game, the opposite team was actually winning 80 to 20. I had to get most of my kills alone and had to survive a few encounters versus multiple players.

I hope you don’t play with the same tunnel vision that you read with. These are the kinds of misunderstandings you get when you don’t read whole posts for context.

No i read it right. I read the whole thing. You’re just incapable of understanding, and comprehending the fallacious arguments you are making and i sincerely hope you learn a bit about data analysis before you do any type of research.

Who’s making arguments? It’s not me. Read the thread again.

Who said these are how all my games go? It wasn’t me. Read the thread again.

The rest of your post has nothing to do with what I stated before, but I guess I have to explain this again for your sake: I’m not uploading more games right now because I keep steamrolling teams to the point where they give up and provide me with uninteresting and not educational footage. Ten games that play 160-80 after 90 seconds and finish 500-1*0 with opposing teams that refuse to stick around don’t provide anything worth watching, so I chuck the video. There’s no data analysis happening here because I’m not concerned with documenting my win rates or kills or team scores or whatever.

If you want to see how I perform in a loss, go watch the second half of part 2 of the rep I just linked to. If you’ve got nothing else to do but muck up my thread, get lost.

Why am I getting a distinct impression that this thread isn’t about helping players get better at DragonBall but is a way for the OP to brag about his skills at it.

This.

I notice I get defeated while running away from attackers, but if I do the same, my attacks miss and get obstructed message on my screen even if they right in front of me in site.
Also notice I get hit by attacks that don’t even touch me on the screen.

And auto target is poor I this mode.

Yeah, it is luck based. Today I was lucky and got teamed with people who were playing to win, so I was able to win.

Yesterday I was teamed with four people who didn’t care about winning and just wanted to get Dragon’s Gaze, so they spent the entire match getting killed trying to time the kick just right.

I regularly get double digit kills, so I’m not bad at it, but I’m certainly not good enough to carry an entire team out to lose.

Isn’t every random teams-game always luck based anyway.
Anyway, I think the OP does show you some basics with the mini game in order to win (more). I didn’t see any great particular feats of skills in his videos though. Just logical things like pick up health, predict where to land your skills, use the skills to their maximum effectiveness, stick with your team. But then the game mode is pretty straight forward.

The point I’m trying to get across is that there is a lot you can do to manage luck by getting better. The more effective you are being yourself, the less you have to demand of your teammates to be more effective than the other side for the sake of the win. Also, in this format, thanks to bad attitudes by some players and how inconsequential quitting a team is, being really good in the first stages of the game could earn you a “free” win if the other side becomes so demoralized that they stop playing or quit, which would permit your teammates more breathing room by allowing them to get away with not playing as well.

Then after they leave and the rebalance pops, you can use your skills to turn the whole game around!

I’m average so I won’t hurt a good team (much), but I can’t save a bad team. When I get lucky and that volunteer button comes up, it’s not a good feeling.

If you can consistently get 15 points, it’s easily a third of the game all by yourself, and you won’t lose often with that, I get about 1 loss every 5 games.
It’s only luck based when you’re terrible and hope you’ll get carried.

How to win Dragon Ball:

1. Zerg with your team
2. Spam 1 key
3. ???
4. Profit

It doesn’t matter how skillful you are as an individual, if the enemy is zerging, they’ll burst you down before you can do anything. It’s even worse when you have potatoes for team mates that don’t know how to counter zerg.

Oh look, yet another video montage of someone just playing the game. This is not ‘skill’ on the OP’s part, it’s just a group of players focus firing on the same target. Anyone can call a target, the rest can just press T and keep spamming 1. That’s all there is to it. 1 man armies do not work in this game mode. Stay with your team, press T, spam 1. Rinse. Repeat.

Shayne Hawke.9160 or should i say Coaxke, I’ve been in the same dragon ball matches with him, yes he was good… I can say he carries the others alot, and i always win whenever i was with him. BUT the real issue was the lag, im pretty sure im doing fine without the lag… last year dragon ball was so much fun… dunno why when playing dragon ball most of us are lagging bad… its hard enough just to time the no2 skill, not to mention to land an interrupt… let alone a 100 interrupts for the achievement…

I suck at it because 1) it’s FPS like and I suck at FPS controls …

Uhm… huh?

I don’t know what he means by controls but the game does remind me of Quake. I think it’s fun I just don’t like how losing basically = wasted time, unlike spvp where you still get a little progression. It’s a hard game to carry people in~ possible but not easy. I actually rather everyone was bad at it so I can finish the daily and get paid so I won’t share any advice lol.
