I love Guild Wars 2 and have been playing since the beta’s but I am a bit concerned about some things that are happening.

I am in a guild comprised of international members. I was fine with us being on different servers because we could transfer worlds when we wanted to game together. I also knew this would end because of the promised guesting feature that would allow us to play with any friends we had on any world. Now however, I see that guesting will only be regional and world transfers are going to cost real world cash. This effectively cuts me off from many of my international guildmates and friends.

I thought ANet’s primary concern was the social aspect of GW2. I find myself now actually more cut off from the social aspect than ever because of these new features. Honestly I feel like part of the fun I had playing the game is now taken away. Can someone tell me if there are plans to rectify this in the future? Surely I am not the only GW2 player cut off from Europe now.

I’m pretty sure Anet is a business and their primary concern is RoI to their shareholders. That said I’m a little sad I’ll never be able to play with my friends in EU.

How did you keep in touch with them before? Just keep on doing that?

The cost to transfer was the plan from the start. The only reason it wasn’t implemented before was because the guesting feature wasn’t up and running yet. You’ll need gems to transfer, though, so you could spend gold to transfer if you really wanted to.

Plus, it’s been confirmed that transfers to less populated servers will be less costly than transfers to more populated servers, if that’s any consolation.

Yeah, I get that it is a business and support them fully in making money. That is a given, but I am sure that the technology is there to support international guesting right?

As far as how we kept in touch before, we transferred worlds. Now that is going to cost real cash. So I cannot keep doing it that way.

That’s unfortunate. What I would recommend is to settle on a single region and a set of 3 servers that have a healthy population across all hours.

As someone who has been playing since BETA, we were always made aware, at least in early parts of the game’s history that free transfer was going away any minute so never made much use of it for anything but server shopping. Apparently the knowledge is lost and I’ve been hearing how people are using it to visit people like a short vacation.

Problem with settling on just one server is the lack of people outside the server peak time. We might be more than 1000 members but moving eg. 500 NA members to the EU server isn’t enough to populate the EU server during NA peak hours.
Our “scouts” on other servers have not reported any server with a healthy around the clock population.

We didn’t all get in touch in game, but we held up the spirit on the forum being sure that playing together was only a matter of time.

Yes we were made aware that server transfer were going to cost, but we were also made aware of that we could guest any server and play with our friends anywhere in the world!

I wouldn’t mind paying a fee for it, but I will not pay every time I want to move. The way it is now, transferring servers are something you are meant to do only once (maybe twice), not several times a day.

I am also totally miffed by this u-turn decision for guesting. Having been in the same international guild for the last 6-7 years through GW1 it is indeed sad to have to say goodbye to a long list of American friends I’ve made over the years, not only through our guild but the 5+ years of making GW1 movies and the loyal friends i made from my viewers. I guess we can still chat but there’s just way too many for me to keep track of long term with only chat as a means of interaction. Thanks to you guys for putting up with me all that time, our cards may have been unwillingly forced but you will not be forgotten. I’m not sure why they’ve made this decision, is it somet to do with WvW? It doesn’t interest me so i don’t really follow whats happening with it, i’m a 100% PvE’er!! I guess we can still keep up on forums and i have quite a few of you as friends on FB but in all honesty i don’t have as much time to keep up with forums like i used to grrr. The original guesting system they promised where we would be free to guest anywhere with friends would have been ideal for me as i work the 3-shift rota, looks like i’ll be on my own at 3-6am in future

To my American friends, thank you for your friendship all these years. I will try to keep in touch with some of you as best i can and wish everyone of you all the best.

@Ceder Of Tyria

Since day 1 there has been a distinct technical differences between EU and NA servers. The fact that you could enter dungeon instances only with players on servers from your region was the biggest clue, at least to me, that there would never be cross-region guesting.

I think the best hope now is a server consolidation that might make off-peak times on Gunnar’s more attractive for our US members, or visa-a-versa with Yak’s ..

The question is why was that your biggest clue? Why wasn’t A-Net open and honest about that to begin with? Why is this the first time that A-Net has said anything except, “We want you to play with your friends whether they are next door or on another continent.” Yes, that’s a phrase that was used when discussing guesting. But lordy, we shoulda known by the way dungeons worked that it wasn’t gonna happen.

The very least they could do is to continue to allow free transfers between regions. And honestly, that needs to go back to happening without the 1 week time restriction. Their whole we can’t make it work routine is tiresome. Fine, don’t make it work, but then don’t enforce paid transfers between regions. That already DOES work.

Why is this any different than what you have been playing for the last 6 months? Its not like they are taking anything away from you. Its the same game you have always experienced as there has been no guesting at all?

Hello,

There is already a dedicated thread about the Guesting feature here : Guesting is Coming, where you can discuss any concern you may have about it.

Therefore, this one is now closed. Thank you for your understanding.
