Hello all,

It has come to my (and probably some others too) attention that players get very hostile towards individuals or small groups who participate on different events or interfere on some events on the same map and then get called at as ‘trolls’ and ‘noobs’ since these smaller groups deprive the ‘larger groups’ of potential loot.

A clear example of this is the Mad King’s Labyrinth: if you are running around, slaying enemies at random, and a nearby door pops up, you get immediately called at if you open the door and finish the objective (when a commander tag is far away). To give some real life examples (including typos!) of some callings of today:
- “NOOB STUPID trolls”
- “let opening dors for commander omg”
- “the point of a Commander is so all players on a map follow him”
- “ill report u for trolling”
- “go to another map and solo there”

There are numerous other examples on different maps where players get scolded for when they (unknowingly) participate in normal gameplay and thus break the ‘tag group farm’ tactics (i.e. cursed shore, etc)

Surely I have to admit that there ARE trollers and griefers out there who get their kicks on depriving larger groups of loot, but they are rare. But, isn’t the whole point of the game just to play the game as you want it?

As a seasoned player who has played the game since beta (24K+ AP) this is a very sad thing to see, especially towards the ‘newer players, who seem to take over the above ’philosophy’ and are often more toxic in their responses than the seasoned ones.

This topic is not intended to discuss the situation where PvE commanders are needed, but rather to discuss where players who just roam around and enjoy doing stuff get called at by larger farming groups. Is this justified by any means? What are your thoughts?

If you get abuse, I’d report and move on. ANET may not do anything about it, but hey you’re playing the game as well. The “everyone follow a commander” thing has its plus and minus points (especially if said commander doesn’t actually know what they’re doing, but that’s normally the exception to the rule). However, as good as the XP & loot is – I must admit it’s rather muted “auto-pilot” game-play for the most part.

Report, move on.

My thoughts?
That’s people being people. Nothing you nor anyone can do about it but ignore and move on with your life.
We all have different play styles. No point in trying to tell others to play by your rules, when you’re not playing by theirs anyway. It just creates an endless cycle of arguments and silly endless threads.

P.S I hate the word toxic.
I see it on these forums almost daily and it does more harm than good to use it.

Well, toxic is also contageous, hence the title. But I see your point and will adjust the title (hope it fits in the 45 char limit) q:

I find most of that sort of abuse funny. It usually says more about the abuser than the abusee.

It’s all about intent. If you are running around the lab opening doors and running deliberately to annoy the “resident” tagged zerg then that’s (mild) trolling and probably deserves a reaction. If you are opening the doors and killing the mob(s) for loot then you are just playing the game.

My favourite is when there are two tagged players arguing in chat about who should turn theirs off. The new mastery stuff probably means we will see more of that.

But, yes, just people being people. Mob Rulez….

If you are ruining others gameplay, ie farming, because you do not want to participate in it, ie playing how you want, then you are basically trolling those people that want to farm in an organized zerg. That is why they call you a troll, because you are working against them, so they see that as trolling.

Why not just join up with them or find another map?

Why not just join up with them or find another map?

Do they have more right to be in that map than I do?
I didn’t realise…

People are not trolling by playing the game how they want. They are not all you and they have a right to do whatever they want in a game they bought.

Did you ever consider this stuff ruins their gameplay?
