I am looking for a solid class to solo GW2 with. I have some experience and do not have HoT expansion (mainly because I dont want to spend the money on it being a grad student). Any helpful tips would be great. I mainly play alone and very infrequently. I just want easy to clear mobs, hero points, map completion, and any veterans or champs that come up. Thanks.

Ranger is the best solo class in the game for PvE. Necromancer and mesmer are also good, but the ranger is still best for solo play in PvE from level one to level eighty. And that class does everything you mentioned with ease.

Ranger & necromancer, sure. I’d toss Guardian and Warrior in there too. Really, Any profession works. But I have to disagree on solo Mesmer. IMO, it is a lot more work to clear zones with Mesmer. Not that you can’t, I just don’t enjoy it as much as the other classes. I really like the clone aspect of Mesmer, but general PvE play makes them hard to use.

For me, Revenant and Mesmer rank last, Guardian and Thief first.

Is there a specific set up that should run? Weapons and pets?

Longbow and sword/axe or warhorn or greatsword for swap. Take 2 cats because they do the highest damage for core pets, swap them on the off chance they actually get hurt.

No way your or your pets ever die.

Edit: If it gets too boring and you start to learn the game, use sword/axe + greatsword and ditch the longbow. Melee is much more interesting than just standing at range watching things attack your pet.

I typically go longbow with a melee set or axes to swap to when desired. Cats are good core pets. Core PvE isn’t generally so hard or unforgiving that you have to choose such things now. Try out the various weapons and unlock traits and utility skills that sound fun. When you hit level 80 you will have them all unlocked, so there is no “messing up” when it comes to what you choose.

Then when you hit 80, hopefully you will have an idea of what works for you so you can apply runes to armor and sigils to weapons that synergize with your skills and traits. Lots of info on the wiki on that.

Also, GW awards birthday gifts based on character creation date. So if you play a Ranger a while, then want to try something new, don’t delete the Ranger. Use those five slots to try different professions. I have 26 slots on my main account + 4 other accounts, so try out lotsa builds.

Of course, you can mix things up on a single profession by changing weapons, like going strictly melee with Ranger. Easy to do while leveling up, but can get expensive with level 80 gear for newer accounts.

The very short versions: Anything you like. No really.

I do agree that Ranger, Necromancer, Guardian and Warrior are probably easier than the others.

But really, you can play whatever you like, however you like for Open World. I had a silly self challenge, and played a Thief to level 45 without weapons… it took time but it worked. Gave up because it got too boring, could easily have completed it to 80. Just little point, since I’d repeat the same thing over and over.

I’d recommend you to just try out some classes you think sounds fun, and pick the one you like the best. And just take the time to play it and learn it as you level.

Necromancer, I was able to solo HoT story much easier then my ranger. I actually needed to party for the final chapter of HoT on my ranger. The final chapter on my necro took quite A bit of time I only died once because of the rock toss while gliding.

I don’t have HoT… so being able to solo that doesn’t matter to me. I was looking for the non expansion GW2

Ranger’ pet and necro’ minions are good for tanking. Out of the two, the ranger has the easier learning curve. Warrior and guardian have good survivable sustainability, plus their learning curve isn’t high.

I’d strongly avoid the engi & ele class. They have a steep learning curve.

- Fill all character slots with a diferent class (mind only race and name, looks can be changed later almost free).
- Login everyday for login rewards.
- Do spvp/wvw dailies (there are daily spvp servers just for that right after reset).
- get tomes of knowledge to lvlup.
- play anyclass you want*

*mind mesmer, which is dificult to grasp but is great a soloing bosses.

got a 2nd account with less than a year old and already got 3 lvl 80s barelly setting foot on the world.

Ranger is definitely the best. I would use the beastmastery line for stronger pets and also improves your shouts to give swiftness because mobility is king in Open World.

You can easily solo champions. And yes, other classes can too, but it’s much more forgiving.

That being said, anything is good really.
