Solution to cloth shortage
Leather is also the most common drop from bags too. When you have 5 bags and 4 give you T5 leather you just wanna cry
My guess is the scarcity and inflation on cloth prices is intentional. If it wasn’t they could just simply lower the silk bottleneck.

It isn’t fair that it’s far more expensive to fully outfit an elementalist with ascended.

Some of us are saving our karma for recipes and the like, so we don’t want to have to flush 2/3 of it down the mystic toilet just to get some linen scraps.
I hope HoT will make thick leather a bit more useful.

True, but being an ele drops seem to be weighted towards cloth, so purchasing outright would be more expensive, but farming would be quicker.

I’m pretty sure that purchasing is faster than farming. ^^

first farming for gold then purchasing….. or just farming for cloths…. seems pretty equal if you ask me.

That would require admitting that the initial adjustment to damask (increased number of scraps per silk bolt, increased number of bolts per damask) was neither necessary nor wise. Anet doesn’t like admitting mistakes, so they will keep pretending everything is still okay as long as they can.

Its not a mistake, if the price of damask is intentional.

Why not? Such differences are part of the game. I play my mesmer and necro far more often than my other characters, despite its having been far more expensive to outfit them in ascended gear.

An Ele only has to obtain 6 weapons to fully outfit him for all weapon combinations, a warrior needs 14. I am pretty sure, those 8 extra weapons will make the warrior more expensive to fully outfit in ascended.

This topic has been talked about a lot. But hey who doesn’t like talking! Personally, I don’t like the disparity in crafting armor types caused by silk because it risks effecting class balance and player choice of which class to make their main.
Imo, the only, easily defended and demonstrated reason for the disparity is that it gives Arenanet a predictable tool to prompt players to do different content.
A less easily defended and demonstrated reason is that the disparity increases the demand for gold.

My only Ascended armor set is light because I play my Mesmer the most. It’s not that much more $$$ if you play regularly.

I doubt that farming for cloth directly is faster then farming for gold then purchasing. From what I’ve read, a good farm spot has a gold per hour rate that’s far faster then killing mobs and hoping for a salvagable drop.

I agree with you here somewhat, we have to consider Ascended weapons as well. Does the effect of weapons on the balance remain as steep if we compare armor weights instead of classes?

You can collect nodes and I’m personally holding off on outfitting my ele to make an ascended hammer, two swords, and a shield…and I don’t even have the laurels for all that :( My ele already has a wupwup staff, wupwup dagger, and Zojja’s dagger (daggers it shares with thief) but needs full celestial gear. Meh, the time gate from creating charged quartz should buy lots of time. Six ascended wupwup insignias should take a month to collect since it’s five charged quartz to an insignia. Then I can work on the shield and convert that to soldier stats (I’ll make a wupwup shield because I like the skin ^_^ ) And it’ll take even longer than that to collect the laurels needed to buy recipes :( Should have waited to put those WvW infusions on my daggers.

Weapons still require wood and metal, you know where to run and find wood and ore whereas fabrics require RNG, you must wait for salvaging rags to drop or get lucky with certain bags (that mostly give leather)
As everyone knows, cloth mats from t3/4/5 are ridiculously inflated, causing ascended mats that require them to cost almost 4 times as much as leather and metal ones, and i believe the solution lies in plant harvesting.
That’s just not true.
Edit: I can’t read. Yes, Damask does cost 3-4 times what Leather and Steel costs. The post I’m quoting is accurate, although I’d argue that it’s misleading about the true cost of the armor.
October 4th, 2015
Bolt of Damask — craft 13g | buy 15g | sell 17g
Elonian Leather — craft 3g | buy 3g | sell 4g
Deldrimor Ingot — craft 4g | buy 4g | sell 5g
Most of a suit of armor is the same across weight classes, so we don’t need to worry about vision crystals, insignia, etc. Heavy armor uses 150 Thermocatalytic Reagent instead of 360 Gossamer Thread, but both are sold from vendors and cost about the same. (2g30s40c for thread versus 2g24s40c for reagents.) Therefore, we just need to concern ourselves with the difference in cost between varying amounts of leather, steel, and damask:
Edit: For clarity, the calculations below use the “craft” prices from GW2Spidy.
Light
36damask + 6leather
Medium
24damask + 18leather
Heavy
25damask + 16steel
Converted to gold costs,
Light
468g + 18g = 486g
Medium
312g + 54g = 366g
Heavy
325g + 64g = 389g
Cost Differences
Medium (0)
Heavy ( +23g )
Light ( +120g )
I think it’s dumb that light armor costs 120g more, because it’s not a question of class balance. Just the same, the problem isn’t as severe as it’s made out to be.
Edit: See edit above.

Cheapest class to outfit in ascended atm would be engi with med armor and only 5 weapons needed. Warrior probably highest cost with heavy and 14 weapons, maybe mesmer with light armor and 10 weapons. Guard and ranger need 11 weapons, with quard needing the more expensive armor.
I could also argue that heavy classes have to pay more for their exotic armor because orichalcum is quite expensive compared to gossamer and hard leather.
It doesnt make sense to compare equipment cost between classes, as long as the cost are the same for every player. If a player rather plays a warrior or mesmer instead of an engi, its his personal choice. You cant micromanage the game economy around personal choices…

All these points are kinda moot right now with the market instability. The disparity between the different armor weights will soon be much smaller as leather is rising in price.
