So I’ve noticed that this is a fairly frequently discussed topic on these forums, how to make gold.

So I’ve though I would post my thoughts on the matter and possibly help out a few people with it.

So what would I know? Well I’ve made a fairly decent amount of gold playing Guild Wars 2. I’m not megarich, I don’t have a bank full of precursors. But I have been able to buy the items that I want, I’ve purchased a triforge pendant which cost me about 80 to 85 gold. An ascended back which cost me about 40 gold in materials. I’ve got full exotics and my gear is almost ideal, I’m just lacking a second ascended ring.

So, here’s a few things that should make it easier for you to to keep some spare gold in your inventory, and buy the things you want.

First off, a few general tips about gold.

If there’s another way to get it than buying it, that’s reasonable, get it that way

The main thing that comes to mind here is exotic armor. I see a lot of people who shell out 3 to 6 and even more for just one piece of exotic gear. Or craft it using very expensive materials. Note that even if you don’t buy the materials and farm them yourself, anything you use to craft is something that could have been sold, so yes you are spending gold to craft something, potential gold.

Instead there are many other ways to get it. Farming dungeons gives you better looking skins, and will actually give you money rather than costing money. If you have karma saved up, you can buy a piece of gear for 42k karma in Orr. WvW badges are another way (though Invaders gear is HIDEOUS)

Instead of spending 50 gold on 250 tier 6 mats, 50 ectos on an ascended back, you can get the 1850 relics for the prototype back. It sounds like a lot but if you do a level 8 and a level 10 once a day then you’ll be able to get 100 relics a day.

If there’s an alternative to acquiring something other than buying it, and that method is reasonable, you should do it.

You have to actually go and play the game

This is self explanatory really. You won’t get gold from sitting around in Lion’s Arch talking with the trolls that frequent map chat there. You won’t get anything from posting on the forums about how it’s a conspiracy from Anet to force you into buying gems.

Luxury items are just that, luxury items

You don’t HAVE to have that new mini pet. You don’t have to have those town clothes. You don’t need a permanent bank access item, you don’t have to have an abyss dye. Items that are considered cosmetics, or luxury items, or whatever, are not necessary. You don’t have to increase your bank space or add another bag slot for your inventory.

Now for how to best gain gold:

Dungeons

Say you need your exotics. Instead of buying, you farm dungeons. You get tokens and also get gold. How? Well rares/exotics can drop during dungeons making you some good money. Chests can give crystals/lodestones that are worth a lot of gold.

Bosses drop 10 silver now. With Omnomberry bar you make that 14 silver, per boss. At level 80 you get 26 silver from the completion reward. With an AC path 1 run you kill spider boss, kohler, and howling king for 14 silver each (42 silver) and then get 26 silver for completion. That’s 68 silver from coin drops and completion alone. It’s common to get at least 1 gold per AC run.

Dynamic events

You mainly want multi-stage events that spawn waves of mobs. The event to open Arah is probably the best. With a full magic find set equipped I would start out by gathering 2-3 scrap metals, turning them in and then running off to crusader angaria’s event. That event itself is bugged, so for 5 minutes you’ll just continually deal with waves of risen that you can AOE down and get great drops from. Then you run up to the promenade and deal with the giant. Afterwards you have to control another area that features a LOT of mobs that run down the steps in a giant group that you can just AOE to death and get great drops from. I don’t do this anymore but back when I did I would get around 2-3 gold in an hour.

Fractals

Fractals have become my new best way of obtaining gold. The drops there are great and you’ll usually get at least 1 gold per run, and that’s a bad run. Yes sometimes you’ll get nothing but some green items. But most runs I come out making some great coin. Over the last few days I’ve gotten about 15 gold and 50 ectos running fractals. Charged cores selling for 1 gold 30 silver, lodestones that can go from 1 gold to 3 gold (unless it’s a glacial, those are very cheap unfortunately.) Cores, lodestones, rares drop like candy there. Exotics aren’t unheard of either.

Do you want valuable things and 20+ gold on hand? Just follow these simple tips and you’ll get it no problem. I have never played the trading post, exploited, etc.

Good advice, sadly Fractals seems to be full of the worst type of players that are found in all mmo’s . If you do not know how to do each fractal exctly how it should be done for the fastest completion (mob skipping), or you ‘die’, or ask a question about what to do – you’ll be opening yourself upto a childish torrent of ‘omgnoob/ltp’ from the so called experts.

If you run fractals, make sure it is with a group of friends/guild not a pug!

Give it a rest.

There’s people who do that in all aspects of all games, you learn to ignore them.

Furthermore you’re hugely exaggerating how often that happens. I’m stitting at 77/100 for fractal frequenter and I’ve one seen one person like that.

Furthermore if you don’t know how to do fractals then you’re most likely at level 1/2/3 which means these “experts” are already higher levels.

I fail to see your point. If someone wants to do something a lot, then let them. You aren’t required to do 250 fractals for anything. It’s no different than anyone putting in a lot of WvW or spvp hours.

You have to admire them though because it takes a HUGE pair of kittens to actually SELL gold for real money AND nerf the ability to earn it by playing the game. I am embarrassed I recommended this game to so many people now.

Feel free to send me 3 Dusk’s then (1 for me and 1 for two others in guild stuck on getting the precursor part). Please do not insult yourself with the “you don’t have to get a legendary” line … nobody has to get anything in a video game.

Sadly, thousands disagree with you on the ease of making gold in this tightly managed (DR FARMCODED NERFED) game. The bare minimum to get by sure but if you want to get Cultural or a Legendary then it is Anet steering you to the gem store. That is 1,200 + hours of TRYING to generate enough to get Dusk speaking.

.

Well, you don’t have to get legendaries. I mean, if you’re not even going to work for them. Those items were put into the game, from my understanding, as a long term goal to work towards and not a “Oh, I want this right now so I should get it right now and since I can’t get it right now this game is flawed in design.” I’m getting by absolutely fine in just cheap rares; if legendaries were -necessary- then I could see some merit to the complaint, but… they really aren’t, and again, are something to spend a lot of time working for (re: a -lot- of time).

Unless, of course, you want them so bad and can’t wait another day and buy gems to convert to gold to get it all ASAP. (Which, seems like a fair trade off to me — work for it in the game over the course of months, or just buy it all with real money that benefits the company).

IMO, the gold-making ability in game is fine. I’ve had plenty to get all the necessary items, and even quite a bit extra to just power through some crafting.

You sir seriously need help with reading comprehension. I have almost 1,300 HOURS logged in my pursuit of this item. How is that “RIGHT NOW”?

The issue is the rate that Dusk is rising out paces my ability to generate gold courtesy of DR. Anet is in direct control of that with their DR. To make it worse they SELL GOLD while crippling the ability of people to EARN it through game play. That is what most would call UNETHICAL.

Pretty much true for most of people, considering 0-80 is a prerequisite to farming high-level content (which drops the mats that legendary requires).

So many people moaning about how they cannot make a decent amount of gold and not willing to put in the time to do so. I will second the fact that its pretty easy to make money via dungeons in the game and I do these dungeons because I want to, not because I have to.

If I didnt like dungeons then id go and farm (not grind) some T6 mats in Orr. If I didnt like doing that id gather nodes. If I didnt enjoy that id go WvW and earn a bit there etc etc. If I didnt like any of these ways and just preferred sitting in LA all day then, and only then, would I consider buying gems. The gem shop is there in order to give people another choice besides spending hours a day playing the game. It just so happens I enjoy playing the game so have no need to buy gems.

Without saying how much I have, if I sold the gems I bought for gold a while back id have enough for Dusk. I havent done a single minutes ‘grinding’ and ive not used real life money. I dont spend all day running dungeons and/or Orr (havent done AC in a few weeks now) and I only really gather in Southsun Cove due to the relative ease of getting the rich Ori node.

Including the fact I bought exotics just for the skins ive bought 5 axes, a shield, a warhorn, a harpoon, 2 rifles, three armour sets(Divinity, Eagle and %boon set runes) and have combined with 2-3 sets of dungeon armour for the skins, two ascended rings and the backpiece. Im not saying this to show off, im merely pointing out the fact that just doing what I enjoy has netted me all I could want other than a legendary which im not currently interested in due to the fact I dont like the skins.

If you dont enjoy then why play, let alone moan about the fact youre ‘forced’ to buy gems’? I dont understand some people.

I did like your OP though. We may have difference of opinons but I will confess to nodding my head to most of your suggestions. Think the main problem is that while u say you dont NEED something that dont change that since the game is about cool cosmetics those things cost an arm and a leg. Unless ofc you really like a certain dungeon set.

One piece of advice I would give is that folks shouldnt worry to much about having all exotic gear. The difference between that and rare is slight. get your rare set and just get what ya can when you have enough tokens or cash spare.

Anyone think it’s hilarious that almost all these money making guilds are telling you how to make money by selling the materials and items your trying to make enough money to afford in the first place? It cracks me up honestly!

If everyone is supposed to sell their luxury items that everyone of course wants where o where is all the money coming from then to fund anyone buying these items? Yep you guessed it buying gems! lol

O wait right we can count the people just running dungeons too for the generated income from say bosses right. Let’s see10 silver is a good price for a boss I’m told at that rate you’d only need 1200 boss kills for about 120 (around that much) gold for a set of cultural armor. Of course the magic food costs you money too (unless you farm the mats and make it which costs you time), factor in unsuccessful runs(bugged runs and bad groups), diminishing returns if you want to just run easy dungeons over and over not going to try to figure out the massive amount of time that would take especially not when I could compare it to say buying gems for gold conversion.

About 10 bucks will get you around 10 gold so (possibly less if too many people are buying it) 120 dollars gets you 120 gold roughly. Even if you only made 8 dollars an hour at your job you could still make the money for that in 15 hours time. I can guarantee no one in this game can make 120 g farming bosses in 15 hours time.

Moral of the story? When its easier to make money for your game outside of the game It’s a problem! lol

In all fairness, I don’t have to deal with unreasonable people 100% of the time when I play alone or with close friends, 80-90% is unacceptable.

Fractals are the best way to earn gold but if dungeons are not your thing (they’re not mine), you can make do with simple farming in WvW or Cursed Shore. The gold per hour isn’t as good but if you stick with it, you will reach your goal eventually.

Sorry but wasabi is irritating, but right.

There is an EXTREME exaggeration about some flawed aspects of this game, and honestly the ones posting in that manner are KILLING the arguments for the rest.
If you can’t articulate properly what’s been discussed for ages now and in a polite manner then perhaps you should STOP posting. and if you need to know what that is, it’s basically that gold is literally TOO important to the game in many of it’s long term goals. However once said long term goals are acquired then it becomes USELESS. So basically they can add any amount of tiers in between legendary and exotic/ascended/raspberry ripple/chocolate chip, but if their game remains inherently too gold orientated whilst also having a market that literally values labor input at next to 0 in terms of crafting, we’re going to continue to have these issues.

As for selling gold, it’s not something that I care much about and I don’t find it to be the crux of the issues as compared to the aforementioned problem with the limited and short sighted crafting system in the game. However it certainly does become more bitter tasting when you realize that you can skip miles ahead and avoid grind (and yes, it’s fuggin grinding don’t try and claim otherwise) by simply opening your wallet to meet the ridiculous demand for certain ingredient items for legendary weapons. Maybe I’m wrong here, but it feels the legendary weapons are FEEDING the demand for big items ENTIRELY and it’s too front loaded into those alone, whereas everything else is just garbage in comparison.

Irony…. xD

I’ve found the best gold per hour to be doing full node clears of Malchor’s/Cursed, and grabbing the Ori/Saplings from Southsun/Frostgorge while killing everything along the way. Obviously this is far less efficient if you aren’t running a murder build, but if you can kill reasonably fast then you can probably make 6-8 gold in 2 hours. Following that, just farming Pen/Shelt is also great gph (even without magic find, though grabbing a banner + cookie/bar helps alot).

I definitely agree FotM’s are a great way to make money (and relieve the tedium of grinding), but they also require you to pay attention. It’s also worth mentioning that if your group sucks and you are dying a lot, that is cutting into your profits. Basically, FotM is the way to go if you have a set group you can spam fractals with or if you can’t stand farming/mindless mob grinding.
