I’ve got a bit of an odd question because my mmo background consists of MMOs such as runescape and maplestory where the games don’t really end, per say, and most content is solo-able.

I like solo-ish content, I really like gw2’s personal story so far, pvp seems fun, and I enjoy exploring the map and doing world bosses. Are things like raids and dungeons necessary to enjoying gw2’s endgame? I’ve been thinking of purchasing the hot and pot bundle but I’m just worried that gw2 may not have enough content that I like at endgame. (I’m just speculating here because when I watched some videos on youtube and a ton of what’s mentioned is group content. Which is probably fine every now and again, but I certainly wouldn’t want to have to find a group every time I wanted to play a game.)

Also, considering living world season 1 isn’t available and I’d have to buy s2 separately from HOT, is there any sort of a recap that heart of thorns gives you to catch you up or does it expect you to watch a recap of s1 and buy s2?

Also, can things such as legendaries be acquired without raids/dungeons/fractals? :o

Sorry for my question dump. As I said, gw2 is extremely different from my other MMOs I play.

Gw2 open world is pretty dynamic, so thats pretty fun in terms of “solo” content if that floats your boat

But dungeons amd fractals arent as bad as you may think. The LFG system is a really quick way to find a group for that kind of content, so you wont have to go out to find a group on your own. And if you dont want to do group content, just explore the world. Take it all in. The world map is massive. Go save quaggans I guess, thats always fun

No recap, unless you have 30+ minutes and want to read the wiki

Legendary weapons dont require those in theory, but you need the money from them. Legendary armor requires raids, legendary backpacks require pvp, fractals, or wvw depending on which pack you want

But heres my advice: wait. Wait until you max out a character, have tried all the dungeons, have a pretty good knowledge of the world map, have gone to the silverwastes, have found drooburt’s body, etc. In other words, experience all you can from the core game before buying the expansions. Youll love them more when you do

I am exactly the same kind of player as you regarding pve gameplay. Most end game group event are scheduled and you can just join the party formed to complete said content.

Personally i hate those long meta event that if i missed the the joun window i will have to wait over an hour to join the next. Last week i head over dragonstand 30 mins before reset, i joined a squad, stayed until map reset, i got thrown into a different instance with my squad. Since then i can’t join their instance as it is full, the wait is wasted.

Luckily i have found another end game for me, it is called wvw, since then i mostly do personal story and wvw.

Guild Wars 2 – The Complete Season 1 – The Movie

Fan recap of season 1 can be found here, which gives details on all the events and new characters introduced. Be warned, it’s over 3 hours long. I’ve watched some of it and would say it’s worthwhile for the character introductions as they show up in season 2 and HoT and your character is familiar with who they are.

As for experiencing season 2, it’s possible to join someone else’s story instance. You get no rewards, but you get to play through each instance, hear the story, fight the bosses etc. If you don’t know anyone with season 2, feel free to send me an in game mail or something and I’d be happy to find time some weekend to play through the season with you. I should be online often in the lead up to the expac.

You do not have to do any dungeons or raids or fractals. But, you first have to define what is “endgame” for you. For many players raids for example ARE the endgame, not the way to get ready for endgame, but the endgame you prepare your characters for.

Legendary gear for example is purely cosmetic in GW2. It does not give you ANY better stats compared to much more easily available Ascended gear. So you only finish Legendaries when you want to, you do not have to. Getting one or several Legendaries can also be endgame. I don’t think you can actually get any Legendaries without doing raids/dungeosn/fractals.

Well you can get gen1 weapons from the tp so no dungeons needed there.
Edit
And legendary armor from spvp/wvw

GW2 badly lacks challenging/rewarding strictly solo content, if that’s what you’re asking.

There are plenty of pick-up groups for fractals/raids as well as public WvW squads though, so it’s arguably easy to partake on “end-game” group content as a solo player if that’s your thing.

What is endgame to you?

This game is very much a “make your own fun” kind of game. If you are an activity-driven player (as in: play the game to enjoy the activities you do), there’s no end to things you can do. If you’re a reward-driven player (as in: play the game to gather increasingly more and better loot, be it equipment or other shinies) you’ll likely run out of things to do sooner or later.

Personally I’m definitely of the first type. Even after 5 years and thousands of hours I still find more stuff to do than time to do it. I love just jumping onto a character (I have many of them by now) and do whatever catches my fancy that day. Mostly I start with casually strolling around some map or another, doing events that come my way, exploring the world, listening and talking to npc, and gathering whatever comes my way.

The game world is so huge that this never gets old to me. There’ll always be areas I haven’t been to in a while, npc I’ve never really talked to, and even today I still come across the occasional event that I’ve never seen before, and many I still like to take part in even though I’ve done them lots of times before.

There’s countless event chains and side stories to discover in addition to the personal story if you’re into that kind of thing (well, you could probably count them if you’d care to, but they are so many that I’ve long since lost track of any kind of counter ). There’s beautiful vistas, hidden stashes, and a variety of useful materials in every map of the game.

If you’re interested in having a good time rather than just gathering the most loot, you’ll find no end of endgame in this game. And eventually you’ll find that by having a good time, you’ve aquired enough wealth on the side to get your shinies anyway. I’ve gotten a few legendaries and countless ascended equipment pieces over the course of those 5 years I’ve been playing, and I haven’t farmed for a single one of them (well, beyond parking two or three characters at a material farming spot and giving up on them after “farming” round 2 or 3 … I guess I’m easily bored ).

This game is single player heaven. There’s a variety group activities (and those are mostly shown on YouTube, as they tend to be a lot more interesting for the watcher than a single asura aimlessly walking across the landscape ), too, but no need to take part in them if you don’t enjoy them or simply don’t want the hassle of finding a group.

The whole game is endgame. As stupid as this may sound, I think GW2 got this right. It’s not for everyone, but if you want to play the game (rather than chase the carrot) this is the right place to be.
