Unfortunately, this is the reality of today’s IP laws. If a company does not protect it’s property by disallowing copyright infringement, they stand to lose the IP to the public domain.

This isn’t ANet picking on the little guy. They’re doing what they must to keep the Guild War’s IP within their control.

Read up a bit on IP and copyright law if you’re interested. Many companies today are bound by those laws and have to take unpopular action quite often due to the way they’re written. IP laws need a global revamp asap and the more people who are aware of how outdated they truly are, the sooner action will be taken to change them.

Their (or rather, NCsoft’s) view is the same as just about any other games, with the exception of certain indie games throughout the gaming community. Everyone overreacted to what should have been common knowledge.

Not that I’m trying to argue this, but how does this compare to Riot/League of Legends?

Actually WoW doesn’t do this and nor does LoL or DotA2 amoung many other popular games. It’s is total crap what Anet is pulling. If I make a guide for their dungeons and people watch and watch the ADs for my guide(aka intellectual property) why shouldn’t I get compensated.

You are seriously misinformed.

Here’s a breakdown of exactly what the situation is, and what it has actually always been, given by a youtube person that does a lot of GW1 and GW2 videos, WoodenPotatoes:

Well problem is still there, and honestly it is setting GW2 up to fail. People don’t do things (for very long) when there is no reason to do it. Just a fact deal with it. People who make good videos all the time are making money off of it. They aren’t doing it purely because they want to.

People who do game videos for a living can do it. People who make game videos for a hobby can do it. People who try to put adverts out to there 5,000 subscriber base to earn maybe £10 a video, aren’t allow to do it. That is all this means. It changes nothing.

It changes nothing and hasn’t changed anything for a long time now.

Attempting to clarify it a little here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/GW2-YouTube-Some-clarification/first#post189099

And you know what? That isn’t quite the whole picture, so I’m going to clarify a bit. (Yes, I’m necro-posting, but y’all will forgive, right? )
Technically, it’s against the current Guild Wars 2 Content Terms of Use for people to make money through such things as monetizing a Guild Wars 2 video. However, we support people sharing their experiences with our game. (Heck, we <3 people doing that!) So while we want to do the right thing and accurately relay what the CToU says — because that’s often the question — we do not take action when fan sites support themselves via ads, and we don’t take action when the creators of fan videos place ads. In other words, we do not flag such videos.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/account/Policy-for-posting-videos-on-Youtube-others/first#post182021

Basically: You can do whatever with the videos, we don’t care.
