They wont beat it, they are already lacking content for the powerplayers, there are no minigames worth playing no nothing, jumping puzzles are a joke, no real reward once you’ve completed one etc…
Subscription based MMOs are the way to go, just my opinion

I don’t think the subscription portion of your post is relevant in any way. WoW is at the point for many “powergamers” where its boring and repetitive. much like working a long time at the same place of employment, most of the time you want to find something new.

Is GW2 the answer ? at its current state… no, but it has a lot of potential and you can see through the beta weekends the changes that were made due to player input, its exciting for sure.
A few major things that need to happen,

Large scale GUILD pve activities, such as raids needs to be implemented. The world events do not cut it. This will be difficult without the holy trinity system but you embraced it, so figure something out.

A DAoC Realm ranking system, where players can rank up and achieve new things.
and please give us a Darkness Falls type dungeon that is gained buy controlling the majority of the maps or unlocks level of the dungeons based on what maps are owned by who.

More Guild meaning in WvW,

This will make the core game a lot more enjoyable for powergamers and casuals.

The question is, will GW2 have more game sales than WoW has current subscribers? GW2 has 2 million sales and WoW has 9 million subscribers. I would think at some point those two numbers will intersect and GW2 sales will pass current WoW subscribers. Not really sure how much that will mean, but I’m sure it will happen.

Will there ever be more players playing GW2 than playing WoW…probably not since WoW will go F2P in the next couple years.

I wasn’t aware that trying to get loot solely so you could get loot later on made a fun game. Guys, I can’t play BF3 anymore. I got all the gear for every kit, and now my character can’t get more powerful. Must be a bad game.

Joking aside (and really, that’s all the “there should be a gear treadmill in this game” argument is – a joke), this game will easily stand the test of time. A lot of the stuff that people are saying will kill the game if it’s left out was also absent from GW1, and it was still very successful.

GW2 is to WoW what The Human Abstract is to Nickelback; just because more people are locked into one game and hate the other doesn’t mean it’s somehow a better game.

There already is a gear treadmill in the game.
There are stats on gear in GW2. As you level the stats on the gear drops increase, forcing you to take the new gear for the stat upgrade.

How is that not the same thing?

The gear treadmill refers to being max level, grinding out a set of gear, having that gear become inferior once a new tier of the game is released, and then chasing the new set of gear. From what I understand, this does not happen at max level in GW2. Getting stronger gear as you level is not a treadmill – you are not putting forth all that effort and staying in one spot (level).

No it won’t. Products that are built around the idea of “beating” another product never succeeds(ok it’s rare). Products that are about consumers and expanding a market. Where design is about the behaviour of consumers and done right tend to do extremely well.

GW2 is not built to beat WoW. It’s built to provide an MMO for a new experience who want something different. In that if it’s not to beat wow and provide a different experience? is it doing it’s job? what is GW2 suppose to beat WoW in?

subscriptions? GW2 doesn’t have a subscription
graphic? I think it’s unfair to judge these as WoW is an older game with an awesome art style.

WoW in it’s prime is nearly undefeatable by a new game without the proper marketing and hype. While this game definitely had it’s hype, it isn’t really ‘casual’ hype. WoW attracted an entire new audience of people with broad advertising like Television commercials, while encouraging those new players to invite all their friends. If any game wants to beat WoW, they’ll need a top notch advertising team, lots of money, and lots of celebrities to be in their commercials. Just making a good game isn’t good enough. (This is all in terms of sales subscribers etc). I can mention World of Warcraft to any person in my age range , whether they’re tech savvy or not, and they’ll know what it is. Until I can do that with Guild Wars 2, I doubt it will surpass WoW.

And not to mention how different this game is. It’s no secret that a lot of people are afraid of new things (While others, like me, are attracted to it). I have dozens of friends who have tries every WoW clone that has come out, but yet since Guild Wars 2 is taking a new approach to MMORPG, they’re afraid to give it a try, afraid to lay down their money and give it a chance (Although it is a bit expensive….).

Anyways, these are my opinions.

I don’t know why so many people care if one game “beats” another. I don’t own ArenaNet. I don’t own Blizzard. I don’t care which game has more members.

I play the one I like. If only 10,000 agree with me, but we can play our game and have fun, I don’t care if WoW has 10 million subscribers.

Same is true in reverse. If I like WoW and play it, why do I care that some other game is smaller? The people playing it are having fun so why would it matter to me?

Well, I don’t personally know anyone who didn’t laugh pretty hard at Pandas.

I think that is a big mistake on Blizzard’s part, using a part of the lore that no one actually cares for.

Had it been the Emerald Dream, or something else, I might have been interested.

Well for me and just about everyone I interact with online here is the state of WoW for us:

Ex-pack hits – Play WoW for a month or so beat all new content get new teir of loot. Quit WoW and do something else for a year.

The last 4 years have been this way and we are tired of it. If GW2 wouldn’t have launched we would have all logged back in like lemmings – beat the new content and moved on. The sad thing is that most of us keep our subs rolling for MONTHS and don’t even play thekittengame. I have finally cancelled WoW for the first time in years and I have no desire / plans to return. I am finally done with it.

This game takes care of soooo so many issues that I had personally with WoW that there is no way I see Blizzard profiting off that style of gameplay in an MMO agian. It was a one time shot – They made it big. Lots of people tried to copy the game and ride thier coatails (read: SWTOR) and failed so miserably the game literally folded within months of launch. People do not want WoW clones.

This is where the money is at now. I paid for 1600 gems that is over a months worth of a WoW sub. So the way I figure it – to support a game I love I will EASILY spend 10 bucks a month for 800 gems regardless if they get spent or get saved. I see it as my monthly sub for Gw2

I’m not sure how many people were on board with Vanilla WoW back in the day but gw2 roping 2 million players this fast seems very good to me. 2 Million players worth of sales, plus gem sales – I would expect to see content coming soon just like in LOL – the players showed the devs how well the game was doing by micro trans – which in turn funded more features/ content.

Micro Trans is the future for gaming and these game mechanics are here to stay if you ask me. It is a vast improvement over games of yesterday.

The only who can beat WoW.. is Blizzard when they shutdown their servers. This discussion is absurd. Both are great games. I feel that GW2 is the first one that could gain more users. And that is a good thing, for both. There is a lot that GW2 can learn from WoW and there is a lot that WoW can lear from GW2. Good competition is what the genre needs.

No, because Guild Wars 2 PvE end-game is non-existant, meanwhile Panda Land comes out in 2 weeks with ALOT of PvE end-game content.

Meaning most PvErs will go there (being the majority of mmo players) and all the PvPers will childishly say “Good, we didnt need you” … massive game population decline, not so supported.

To beat WoW, it needed to be better AND compete in its strongest areas. PvE endgame is incredible weak in GW2… no chance on earth.

I doubt it. It’s a wonderful game but I don’t see it having enough to pull the WoW crowd away from WoW. I am going to continue raiding in WoW and having fun poking things on alts in GW2. They’re pretty different games and I really don’t get the sense that GW2 is out to “beat” WoW.

GW2 doesn’t really have the structured PvE content that WoW does so it’ll struggle to get the raiding crowd anyways.

It really is just a different game. Without that sub it’s easy to pick it up whenever you feel like exploring/pvping and keep playing whatever other MMO you want in the meantime.

These things definately need to happen or this game will just fall to obscurity like GW1, which would be a shame. But they didn’t solve the main problem of GW1 (“The anti-social MMO”) – there is no real reason to get together with your guild, and no real sense of community as a result. According to polling and statistics gathered by Bioware for SWTOR, the modern MMO community has now become 50% PvEers and 50% PvPers.

So the exodus of PvEers from a game is no longer a death knell as PvP is becoming the more popular option in MMOs with every passing year.

Baiscally, the MMO genre is being taken over by RTS/MOBA/FPS fans. Which is good, those are better genres than MMOs ever were.

As the genre grows, we will reach a point where PvEers are a minority like PvPers were in the old days.

Basically just like how single player stories have become an addon in most games and MP is the focus.

Really hoping for 10 man dungeons – not “raids” per se, but very hard instances that you run once to get a special piece of armor or title or whatever, and then that’s it, instead of the WoW-style farm.

Someone has to do it.. Will Guild Wars 2 beat (be better, have more players etc) Wow?

Dunno, we are still continuing the debate of which is the better color. Its odd how the color red still exists even though we all know blue is the superior color.

The fact the first GW was successful really is a moot point. It’s a older game that appealed to a different generation of gamer. As times change, what gamers want change with it. The fact there is no “gear treadmill” or any real sense of accomplishment or from of progression at 80 is only going to hurt the game in my opinion. A mmo success seems to based on the number of player who are currently playing it and only time will tell if this style of mmo will work.

Personally I enjoy the game thus far and only have a few complaints about it.

That being said I have LOADS of friends who still play wow that are completely sick of the game and bored with it and looking to move on to something new, but refuse to get GW2 simply for the reasons I stated above. A fair chunk of these people are hardcore pvper’s both arena and rated’s. I’ll even quote a few. “Whats the point, they toss pvp gear at you for free and as such we don’t really have anything to work towards”

Basically what I am trying to say is that if Anet doesn’t take these things into consideration the game will never really have a chance to show the world how much better it truly is, and sooner or later the only people playing it will be the die hard fanboys of the first installment.

I don’t think Arenanet made this game with the intention to beat WoW. They are completely different styles of games.

More subscriptions? Probably not. WoW was the right game at the right time and they’ve doing well to retain as many subs as they have.

More enjoyable / better is subjective. I’m enjoying myself right now and have no desire to return to WoW. 6 months or a year from now? I don’t know. I’m not going to worry about it. Not yet anyway.

Much like topics on console wars in other forums, threads about “Guild Wars 2 versus XYZ MMORPG” threads only end in disaster. As such, I’m closing this topic. Thank you.
