Someone please explain finishers
No need to ‘dig one up’. Just set the Finisher you prefer in the Hero Panel (or use the ‘Randomize’ option).
Good luck.
In some situations, stomping a downed player (using a finisher) is faster than outright killing them. In wvw, if your server has bloodlust, you can get an extra ppk for stomping vs. killing.
It can also finish off a downed player while someone is reviving them, when you may not otherwise be able to kill with damage.
Fractal avengers try to stomp players in pve.
Finishers are cosmetic effects that play when you stake a downed foe.
You don’t “dig them up” when using them, but rather the game will automatically use whichever one you currently have turned on in the Hero pane (H key, from the same list where Dyes and Minis are found).
Can someone please explain why finishers exist? Specifically, in PvE (I play in PvE 90-98% of the time).
Consumable finishers seem totally useless in PvE except fighting against the leftover stuff from LS S1 in a handful of locations.
Also, how on earth do you use them in WvW or PvP? They only work on players, and if you take the time to dig one up, you risk the player reviving himself, or someone else on your team beating you to it.
If you’re thinking of the finishers that you have in your inventory, you need to add those to your Finishers panel – just like you don’t use Transmutation charges from your inventory, you “use” them to add them to your inventory.
Agree with the above. Finishers are a fun little side bit to the game that adds a more personal touch to finishing a fight.
When you double click on a finisher in your inventory it pops up finisher inventory and allows any expendable ones to be added to your stockpile. It also sets your finisher to the last one added. That’s what might be making you think you have to do the full process. That said even if you don’t have any you will default back to the generic “dirty sock on a stick” finisher that is unlimited so don’t worry about not having any, spike to your hearts content.
In WvW you will get more points if your side has bloodlust so spike if you can and the situation calls for it. PvP’s more of a spike vs cleave situation. Now as far as PvE, there are only limited mobs to have to spike, wouldn’t mind seeing them add more NPCs with that mechanic in the future though so you are right, usually you don’t need there.
Good hunting!

Finishers were added in PvE during LS1 against the toxic alliance. It was just another way to make more money off the gem store. It didn’t really add anything but annoyance that you now have to stomp some enemies when you used to kill them outright when their HP reached zero.

I don’t think that finishers in PvE are annoying so much as those toxic alliance events are annoying to deal with, especially on level appropriate characters. I think that overall, more PvE mobs could require finishers and it would be great.
Specifically champions, all legendary foes, and some of the end fights in instances. Would add flavor without being overbearing, would also allow primarily PvE players to show off their finishers

What does having to stomp mobs add?

i think it added some immersion, because why do i (pc) get to have a downed state and not any other character in the game?

What?? Oh my god you just freed up so much bag space for me!

Possibly.

Still not as annoying as the White Mantle Mesmers and the ones in Draconis Mons.

True. I eventually just started ignoring them.

It gives a reason for PvE players to care about finishers, which could earn ANet some money off the gem store finishers. It also adds immersion. Powerful enemies need to be stomped in this game (other players in competitive modes, the tarnished traitor, toxic alliance knights), so why do all of these enemies that are supposed to be super strong not have to be stomped?
I wish we could use Finishers on more PvE mobs. I have many, many, many Finishers, and I would love to use them.

This.
Can you imagine a pve zerg all stomping a champ at the same time? All the finishers…. O.O

That changes nothing. Only the first person to finish actually triggers the finisher.
1. I love finishers, they are so much fun in PvP and WvW!
2. Those toxic alliance events in PvE don’t make any sense to newcomers who haven’t played through LWS1. It took me years to understand what they were all about — it only became clear to me after watching the LWS1 movie. I agree that they are too high in level for starter maps.
3. They should introduce finishers into the LWS2 and HoT events where you “finish off” an opponent (namely “Mystery Cave” and “Hearts and Minds” missions).
Your finisher also plays when you /gg on raids and fractals.
Also, they could make that champions and other higher mobs need finishing (except for specific ones and world bosses… who will get to stomp tequatl?) while any left over adds try to ress them.
This would make up for strategies of using a downed mob as bait to cleave adds (as its fairly used in pvp/wvw)
Also, you get to stomp some instance bosses on LWS2 (or 3)

Finishers used to be unique to PvP players in GW2. It showed players who had played a certain amount of games/ players who spent X amount of time in PvP and they were rewarded for it.
Anet decided to kill finishers by making them very easy for PvE players to get and then trying to sell them on TP for money. Like many have said it was a cheap ploy to get more money. So after that didnt work they found something in HOT.
Gliders and guess what when the next expansion comes with mounts, take a wild guess what TP cosmetic item for 2,000 gems will be?
There are certain npcs in game you can stomp but it is mostly for pvp/wvw. In some cases it does make sense to stomp, especialy if you can’t outdps the rez (see druids + pet).

Same here. I have a bunch from different things and since I do not do pvp their main use is in the training area. Granted they are a pvp and wvw thing but is annoying since I did the thing to get them (and bought one or two on the gem store that I just could not pass up).
No. I don’t want to have to finish off any more mobs than I already do. I avoid the Toxic Alliance left overs whenever possible. As for the “Why do I get a downed state when no other character does?” Because you’re a Player…not AI. If we add it based on this then I want to be able to load as many copies of the same utility skill as can fit on my bar so as to chain them all, or maybe a special “Player Skill” that can be selected from a bunch of check boxes to be “Unique” to our character only.
In case you weren’t sure, I am totally against the whole concept of having to Stomp anyone…players or mobs.
Thank you all very much! I didn’t know that clicking “Use” would add them to my wardrobe. While I don’t play WvW enough that I’ll ever use them all, it’s good that I don’t have to take up bank slots for them any more.
And, I agree that it adds flavor, and they should be used for bosses in PvE. Seems kinda fun, actually. But, they should probably allow all players to “finish” any big boss, since it’s really only cosmetic in PvE.
Thanks!

Oh well. Still, imagine if every completed finisher appeared. The chaos!

Actually, it might be OK, but it would require some coding.
If they changed the finishers usage for boss battles, they could the finisher piece (the last 1/2 second of the animation) be done in order, around the beast’s carcass. Put a 1/4 second delay between each finisher in the theater. That would have a stadium-wave effect, although more of a ping-pong than an actual wave.
If they were really clever, they could have a message of victory rise from the ashes of the boss while the finishers ran through the cycle. That would be a really cool animation. But, it might be expensive to implement. Still, if they did, it would be a first in the industry, and another feather in their cap.
Oh, and I should clarify: there would have to be a checkbox for players, so they could ignore this timing-change. Some would rather just get on to the loot.
