I’m here from “that other game.” I was more into PvP than PvE. The lack of balance and over-abundance of CC killed it for me. I am well aware we have balance issues here, but in general I feel like WvW is a pretty good PvP experience. What I miss the most from there is the direct rivalry. I have no reason to “hate” Yak’s Bend or whoever, outside the fact they are 1 of this 2 weeks rivals.
I know it would take some time and resources program wise, bu it wouldn’t take much living story-esque short plotline to explain why we fight each other when there are elder dragons at our doorstep.
TL:DR I want to “hate” my “enemies” in PvP, but they look just like me. Am I alone ?

Sanctum of Rall has been stuck in the top bracket for months now….

Jade Quarry seems to hold first place all the time…. and we, SoR, are always in third.

ALWAYS.

Its annoying.

We never change enemies…. and I’m pretty sure we all hate JQ (if for no other reason that they are always top server in our bracket)

be happy that your enemy worlds actually rotate.

They should look just like you.

I’m going to assume “that other game” is WoW. Coming from there, you should know perfectly clear why your enemies are other servers instead of other races.

Were you around when Human players in WoW got Every Man For Himself racial? Were you playing before Will of the Forsaken “shared” a cooldown for PvP trinkets? If so, you will know that most players will put themself on one team with the “overpowered” skills.

No you’re not alone. This is where putting in enemy names would really be helpful, it would help foster rivalries..

As you continue to play you will start to recognize the names of the prominent guilds. This is where the rivalries come in. When you see their guild colors hanging from your castle’s walls, then you will feel hate.

Dip into the WvW forums and you will stories of alliance and betrayal, espionage and treason – it’s a regular Game of Thrones in there.

You realized your enemies drop bags for you to loot? Where did those loot bags come from? They are originally your property and your enemies STOLE them from you! Those kittens! Kill them to get back what was yours!

I just don’t feel the need to hate anyone virtually or otherwise, i have very little need to go and beat other players in or out of games..

I don’t really get why people need to “hate” others to enjoy PvP at all…

I guess i have no need to be competitive etc, i dislike all sports for that reason so i guess it stands to reason i dislike PvP the same way, especially the type of players it attracts with all this virtual hate etc..

I get what you’re saying.

You know what would be cool is if a random player from another server was selected during a WvWvW battle and you received a unique skin if you managed to kill them. They’d also have the same ‘quest’ to eliminate you. On the battlefield their name would be in hot pink or something to make them stand out more. Of course you might have to wade through dozens of their guild mates to get to them but it would make PvP a lot more interesting.

WvW doesn’t take place in Tyria, nor does SPvP. These battles take place in the mists, which is the essence from which everything else is created. It’s also the place where people go in Tyria after they die.

SPvP are reflections of famous past battles. Great warriors, to test themselves to those battles to refight them over and over again, proving their valor and skill.

As far as I can tell, when you face other realms in WvW, you’re actually facing a reflection of your own reality. A parallel universe. But you fight for the honor of your universe. Different races would fight for different reasons.

Humans, presumably, would fight to impress the gods. Norn would fight to make their legend. Charr would fight to hone their skills. Sylvari would it for the same reason Sylvari do everything… to learn, to experience it. And Asura would do it for the bragging rights, or because they’re trying to figure stuff out. Maybe it’s linked to their eternal alchemy.

Because you’re not fighting people in your own realm, you really do have to figure out why you personally are doing it.

I’ve always thought the way WoW did it was a sort of cop out. We attack them because they’re they enemy. So what?

There is no race in which everyone of that race hates everyone of another race. There’s no nationality where everyone of one nationality hates another nationality. This is the whole good vs. evil in fantasy fiction thing. It’s a cheap gimmick to sell us on who are the bad guys and who are the good guys.

It’s much more interested, to me, to say that we’re all the good guys, but we’re the better guys, and we need to kill the others simply for the sake of glory. It’s not less reasonable.

And yeah, you will learn to recognize specific guilds and find you dislike them. There are a couple of guilds I attack on site, just because they’re just obnoxious. No, I won’t name them here. lol

Literally “hating” your opponents in a game really isn’t healthy.

It’s a game, they’re people too – when you were a kid kicking a ball around in the street you aimed to win out of competitive spirit, to say “I’m best!”, and because it was fun.

If you did it because you hated everyone else you have unaddressed issues.

Oh believe me, play WvW enough and you will grow to hate the other servers. But at the same time, there is also an unspoken camaraderie with enemy players, like when you /bow to someone in the jumping puzzle and they let you go. But then that hate comes right back when they camp you instead. WvW for me has a lot of emotional ups and downs, and I wouldn’t trade it for a blind un-based hatred like Luxon vs Kurzick , Orcs vs Humans, or Capulet vs Montague. I’d rather develop my own feelings for the enemy, instead of being told to hate these guys for no reason other than that they are different.

I don’t literally hate them, hence the quotes around “hate.” I’m talking about a role playing kind of hate. You know, the RP in MMORPG. When I was kicking a ball around the street my goal wasn’t to kill my competitors. In PvP my goal IS to virtually kill them, and I like to have a reason to do that.

I don’t need to know my enemies’ names in WvW. In fact, I like it better anonymous. I’ll recognize my enemies from their familiar gear and their style of play just like I know they can identify me.
