Specializations... a little confused
With the release of HoT, each profession will have one Elite Spec that the player can choose to go into.
I’d imagine in the future then more would be released.
Time is a river.
The door is ajar.
When they say “Specializations”, I kind of imagine that each class with have multiple paths to pick from and can specialize in those paths. Is that the case, or will there only be 1 per class? Will EVERY ranger go on to be a druid, and EVERY guardian go on to be a “dragon hunter”, or will there be other choices besides those for each class?
“Specialization” is just the new term for a trait line. All old trait lines will be the “Core” specializations. A player may choose one or zero “Elite” specializations to significantly alter their class (E.g. Ranger > Druid). ANet has stated that they plan on releasing additional elite specs per class in the future. HoT will simply ship with one per class.
No. You’ll be able to pick three trait lines (or specialization lines), or you can sacrifice one of those lines for an “Elite” line. You don’t have to pick an elite line if you don’t want it, it won’t be an apparent disadvantage cause you get a basic trait line instead.
Anet has talked about adding other Elite Specializations going forward. Since choosing one requires choosing a trait/specialization line, it would be easy to add a spec by adding a line. With HoT, there will be one Elite Spec per profession, but players may choose to play their characters without using the new options.
The question I would have is, “Once another Elite Spec is published, will someone be able to choose two of them on the same character, or will it be one only?”

Previously stated by ANet that it is one only. Options:
A) 3 core specs.
B) 1 elite and 2 core specs.
I foresee them adding more with new living story additions as time goes on. Most likely one new specialization per living story season.
Yeah at first everyone will use the new specialization, because it’s the new hotness. Over time people will start leaving them to play how they like.

Thanks, I missed that.

every trait line is called a Specialization. so they do just what you asked.
Elite Specs, on the other hand adds more than a normal Specialization does.

Yeah, they pointed out that there is a nifty gold border around the Elite Spec, showing that only an Elite Spec can go in that slot, and an Elite Spec cannot go in a non-gold slot. So future Elites will be mutually exclusive.
