[Speculation] Thief Spc = Monk
Considering that Monks are usually religious or spiritual people and most religions see stealing as a sin, I doubt it.

what if that is a rifle with a really long barrel?

Whereas I agree that it looks like melee staff (still hoping but not certain!) I doubt that because there was a data mined costume leaked somewhere, that the Specialisation will actually be called a Monk. It can still happen, but I doubt it.
After all, how many of us managed to buy a Dragonhunter or a Chronomancer outfit so far?
Could be land spear too

To be fair, at this point the devs may be tossing in unused concept art and discarded ideas as placeholder data to throw people off the mark. It would allow them to do some of the patching they’ll need for upcoming Betas without letting data miners spoil any surprises.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
rifle with a 3 foot silencer perhaps ?

That would hardly be the strangest rifle in the game.

Land Spear for the Land Shark?
For me, I’d like to see something similar to the “Assassacaster” A/Mo staff build that utilised Signet of Judgement (obviously now a Guardian skill), Dancing Daggers and the like.

Land Spear for the Land Shark?
Suggestion: Landshark is UP! Plz buff with legs! hehe
Back in 1st edition Dungeons & Dragons, the Unearthed Arcana book introduced a thief variant called the Thief-Acrobat which utilized a staff. IIRC, the class had a lot of special movement abilities like tumbling attacks and evades that allowed it to get in and out of combat easily.
I think something like this could translate into GW2 very well, possibly resulting in a specialist thief class that could have a very high number of evasive moves. It could feature a larger than normal dodge bar or ways to instantly recharge it, etc. The staff could provide several forms of acrobatic style attacks (pole vault charging leaps, aerial spins, etc)
but what if we thieves get ‘reroll war’ as specialization instead? qq.
