Apparently in the original guild wars, the way expansions worked is that each expansion acted almost like a separate game, each expansion containing a different story and taking place in separate continents, and often times, different mechanics and enemies

to actually play guild wars 1, you could purchase any expansion EXCEPT eye of the north, and play through that campaign without the need of any of the prior expansions

players could travel between these continents and take part in the campaigns there if they have multiple expansions

so, there’s a bit of history about the way Anet did their expansions in the past and now i was wondering if you guys think they’ll keep this method of designing expansions for guild wars 2 and how you’d think it would work with the game’s open world

Gwaiyn – 80 Thief
Ryfaul – 80 Warrior
Fluene – 80 Mesmer

I don’t think they’ll add another Continent in the first expansion. There are still Dragons to be dealt in Tyria and unless one flies off we can’t exactly abandon it to have adventures elsewhere.

If I were to take a guess, the first expansion will probably expand on Tyria itself first as a EOTN type expansion with seperate paths each one dealing with a seperate Dragon. Of course they could also do that in DLC content, so we have yet to see what will happen.

Im pretty sure they mentioned a long time ago that they would have expansions like EotN rather than separate campaigns.

I doubt they will add more professions to avoid overlapping themes and functionality of the current ones.

Don’t mess with Ascalon!

GW1 only had one expansion (eye of the north) the others were campaigns, entirely stand alone. Anet has already said we will not be seeing that style of content delivery in GW2

The “story line” approach failed miserably in SWToR. People do not consider stories, voice acting and cut scenes as viable content. They are filler.

If developers were truly serious about those areas being a staple in a game they’d invest the proper amount of $$ into them, instead of using them as cheap filler.

ANet is steering GW2 dangerously into the Asian grinder mentality of Dress Up Barbie and meaningless “achievements” and “titles”.

The recent introduction of laurels proved that the karma system had run it’s course in just a few months. Crafting does absolutely nothing fort he player economy and is another very short term activity.

that’s exactly what i remember, as well. we won’t get campaigns, just “traditional” expansions. personally, i’m okay with that.

also, if i remember correctly, Anet mentioned that after launch, half of them would work on the live team, and the other half would start working on an expansion. we haven’t heard from certain people on their team for a while now, i think. people who have been interviewed quite frequently before launch. apart from that, they’re only announcing their plans for the first half of 2013 so far. i’m thinking we might see the first expansion a year after launch.

oh, and since new weapon types (and those would obviously have new skills) have been hinted at, i think it’s fair to assume that we won’t be seeing any new professions. at least not for the first expansion.

Play any Asian grinders lately? Yeah…I don’t see GW2 moving into that territory anytime soon (I’ve played a few…). Just about all MMOs have some sort of title system, and the whole “dress up barbie” system is also in many western games. Skins are GW2’s version of prestige. I love the idea, personally, but to each their own.

On topic:

I see an expansion being announced sometime in 2013 (maybe E3) and releasing sometime in the second half of 2014. I wouldn’t be surprised if the expansion added a nice chunk of land to the current map, but I don’t see any new professions in the first expansion (would be cool though). A new race maybe? I just hope they keep the level cap at 80.

As far as content goes, I’m glad they’re trying to work out current wrinkles in the first half of 2013, as well as introducing “Living stories”. I’m really excited to see how those play out.

Expansions will not be here for 3+ years.

What makes you say that?

Guild Wars Prophecies was released on April 28, 2005.

Guild Wars Factions on April 28, 2006

Guild Wars Nightfall on October 27, 2006

and Guild Wars Eye of the North on August 31, 2007

That’s three expansions within about a three year time span, the first of which occurred one year after the game’s initial release.

Common sense dictates that expansion will not come out within 3yrs. First, the game director already confirm that they are NOT actively working on the expansion, they dont have a dedicated team on it, they are using all their resource to push on new content monthly. They already have the first 6 month planned out in new content, and more to come in the future, suffice to say that they will focus on the original game for at least 1 year. Next, Gw1 cant be compared to Gw2 in terms of scale, a massive game like Gw2 is going to require more time, and needed at least 1.5year of dedicated programming to meet the quality we expect, and then addition time for internal testing, betas, etc. Even when they work on the expansion, they will most likely still push out new content every once in a while = more delay in the expansion.

If, if, they introduce new races (I wouldn’t mind Tengu), I hope to God they get their own city, their own zones running from level 1 to at least 40 with Dynamic Events Renown Hearts on the level of those in other zones, and voice work on par with the five established races.

Can you link to where exactly they’ve said they don’t have a team actively working on an expansion.

The only issue with that is I seem to recall them saying that they didn’t want to have to create more low level zones after the games release. The Tengu definitely make sense in that regard though, their starting zone would most probably be Caledon Forest, solving the issue of creating an entirely new starting zone. The issue with that is that Caledon Forest is FULL of Risen. Tengu would be coming it at a time after Zhaitans defeat, so it would make no sense for their starting zone to be full of enemies that chronologically shouldn’t exist.

Anet never visits E3, and they likely never will as long as it stays disconnected from the actual fans/gamers, they’ve said that much before.

They also said quite a while back (before launch) that they will likely raise the level-cap. Most likely with expansions, I imagine.

New races could be Tengu and/or Largos. Any minor races you can choose to have racial sympathy with in your personal story and the Kodan are very unlikely.

First, the game director already confirm that they are NOT actively working on the expansion, they dont have a dedicated team on it, they are using all their resource to push on new content monthly. What you said only applies to their Live Team. A year or so before launch they stated in interviews that after launch, roughly have of their total employees (currently around 300, if i’m not mistaken) will make up the Live Team and work on the live game. The other half started working on the expansion as soon as the game was launched. Why do you think we didn’t hear anything from Eric Flannum, Jeff Grubb and Ree Soesbee in quite a while? Back before launch one of these three was in every other interview or so.

If, if, they introduce new races (I wouldn’t mind Tengu), I hope to God they get their own city, their own zones running from level 1 to at least 40 with Dynamic Events Renown Hearts on the level of those in other zones, and voice work on par with the five established races.

Caledon Forest? Are you aware of the Dominion of Winds? I think it’s pretty obvious that that would be the perfect Tengu starting zone if they’re introduced as a playable race. Also, if i recall correctly, the “we don’t want to add more starting zones/tutorials” quote was only referring to the confusion the different campaigns caused for new players of GW1. Obviously they would want to avoid that, and i believe that’s one of the reasons they said they wouldn’t go with that expansion model again.

Dominion of Winds is their City not a starting zone. The Dominion of Winds has gates leading out onto Caledon Forest a level 1-15 zone and Kessex Hills a level 15-(20?) zone. In Kessex hills there is an area aptly titled “Dominion killing zone”, you wouldn’t call something a killing zone if there were enemies to be found inside your own walls.

The way I took it was that they didn’t want to add more low level areas because of the nature of GW2, to force level 80’s to go back into zones where they can kill everything in 1-3 shots isn’t something they want to do. It’s accepted with the current 5 starting zones, but I think they want to avoid adding more.

just because it’s walled in doesn’t mean it’s a only city. i still think it’s gonna be a zone. or are there any sources that already state it’s only a city?

“The Dominion of Winds is a walled-off tengu city on an island chain south of Kryta”
Whilst that is off the wiki so it’s possible that it wasn’t sources correctly, I am pretty sure it was.

I feel like it’s also really important to point out that The DoW is built atop Sanctum Cay, which wasn’t exactly a massive island in GW1. And yes the water levels across Kryta have changed in the 250 years, but I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t have drastically increased in size, and actually, Sanctum Cay was a similar size to the GW2 cities.

I agree with all of this except crafting professions. I think the current professions kind of cover all the bases. When you start putting in too many it just becomes a nuisance.

As for new classes, one of the Fractals (the one with the colossus) heavily hints at some new version of the Ritualist from GW Factions (it also has Assassins but we have them already, they just got renamed thiefs).
